Okay, my dad's computer just got fried from a faulty PSU or something.

What I need:

Ram
Soundcard(I think i'll get a chaintech envy24-based one since I have one and it works great)
What he use it for:
websurfing, word processing...
I have this phone beside my computer right now and I'm sick and tired of people coming into my room to use it. So I'm thinking of just put the phone else where and for my room, i'll use my computer. Problem is, how do I do this? A modem?

I am looking for a dictionary that can work with a small database or at least give definitions to a giant list of words. The list is a bit long to do manually one word by one word.
anyone got ideas? preferablly freeware but if its cheap enough a good dictionary is worth the price.
is there any program that lets me input mathematical stuff? ie. square root, fractions etc.
by the way I am not looking for the alt + watever keys for microsoft word, that is way to tedious and doesn't have everything...

I have come to face one of the biggest hurdles of life... somehow convince my math wiz dad that I need a graphing calculator. so please, who ever else that is good at math? explain to him how it supposedly makes your life easier? (I'm only in gr10 math so..can't rlly impress dad)
