    Silent power conditioner?

I'm looking for a power conditioner for my old house with what I suspect is pretty dirty power. All the units on Amazon (TrippLite, Opti-UPS) have complaints of humming noises, which doesn't surprise me considering they seem pretty lightweight and cheaply made. Can anyone recommend a decent...

New PC won't post; compatibility issues?

Haven't tried the 620 yet, that's a good idea. I did try both DVI ports. I'm wondering if it's somehow a problem specific to the HIS 6950--I found one other instance of someone having the same problem with that card and the ASRock Extreme 4 where he had several other (Nvidia) cards that would...

New PC won't post; compatibility issues?

Specs of new PC are: 2500K Asrock P67 Pro3 HIS Radeon 6950 2GB 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws Antec True Power 650W Assembling everything yields failure to post and a "d6" error code on the mobo, which indicates "no console output." The weird thing is I can put the HIS 6950 in my old machine...

    Need reasonable laptop for Mom

My mother is looking for a new laptop, and since I'm totally clueless about laptops, I thought I'd get a recommendation here. Her budget is probably about <$900. Also, how does the useless bloatware compare these days on different models, from those at Best Buy to Dell/HP? Are there any...

My Soyo Topaz S review ($300 24 inch LCD from office max)

For $300 you get a great panel. Colors look nice, viewing angles are great and mine had no noticeable dead pixels. The stand is cheap but serviceable. If you don't need to hook anything other than your computer up to it, I would highly recommend this over the LG or BenQ that cost twice as much.

Anyone have the link to fixing dark CRT's by replacing caps?

Thank you Jetski, that was the exact link I was thinking of. Regrettably I had remembered incorrectly and that fix is for washed-out blacks; I have exactly the opposite problem and everything is just getting too dark.

Anyone have the link to fixing dark CRT's by replacing caps?

I actually just purchased the $300 Soyo (and actually really enjoy it), but I have a dual monitor setup and would like to continue to use the amazing FP2141 as my secondary. I seem to recall a page with relatively simple instructions on overvolting the tube and at any rate would like to see it...

Anyone have the link to fixing dark CRT's by replacing caps?

I've searched but cannot find an old thread that linked to a site explaining how to fix darkening CRT's by replacing the caps to overvolt the tube. If I recall correctly the guy was even selling premade PCB's you could just plug into your monitor somehow. I have an aging FP2141SB that's sadly...

My Soyo Topaz S review ($300 24 inch LCD from office max)

Does anyone know if there is a driver or any other way to get this to do 75 Hz vertical refresh? It's the same panel as the BenQ and LG that are capable of this; is the Soyo simply not?

How would NEC 20WMGX2 handle other resolutions?

Thinking about purchasing a NEC 20WMGX2 before they're gone forever. My only concern is that a I run a lot of games at traditional CRT resolutions (1024x768 chiefly) and I'm worried how these will look on the LCD. How does this widescreen LCD handle resolutions in different aspect ratios...

Side mouse buttons don't work in game on Vista 64?

I'm running Home Premium Vista x64, using a Razer DeathAdder with the latest drivers and firmware installed, and no matter what I do I cannot get the side buttons to work in Counter-Strike: Source. I've tried using them as the default "Windows 4" and "Windows 5" mouse buttons as well as binding...

New, official betas out - 163.11 for Vista x86/x64

    Reuse old 80G SATA150 Raptor?

I'm building a new system and am using the Seagate 7200.10 drives for storage, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to reformat my 80GB Raptor (it's one of the older ones. not the X) and use that for the OS and whatnot. I hear the 16MB Seagate drives are nearly as fast (if not faster at times)...

Best way to test/configure vLite Vista install

Great response, thanks! Unfortunately now I'm on my (soon to be) old machine running WinXP SP2 32-bit, so I suppose I'll have to wait until I build the new one, install Vista 64-bit, then use vLite to pare everything down and then reinstall?

Best way to test/configure vLite Vista install

I'm building a new computer and have all the parts here except the processor (waiting on price cuts, obviously). I'm planning on using vLite for my Vista Home Premium 64-bit install have read you can use Virtual PC 2007 to test everything before you burn new boot media. What's the best way to do...

is 520w enough for this system or should I go 620w?

Thanks for the fast replies. I was going off newegg prices for the hx620, which were about $40 more than ZZF, meaning the hx620 was only about $20 more, so I just went with that.

is 520w enough for this system or should I go 620w?

Just to clarify and avoid starting a new thread, if that same system had a third HD, 4GB RAM and an 8800GTS would a quality 520W still be sufficient?

Using multiple displays at the same time.

When you click on the webpage on your other monitor, you are effectively alt+tabbing out of your game, which is why it minimizes. One way to get around this is to run the game in windowed mode. Many games allow you to play in a maximized window (offhand I know WoW does, but CSS does not)...

Regarding the July 22 price cuts

How do retailers generally handle these price cuts? What I mean is: can I expect the price on a Q6600 at newegg to drop to ~$266 right on the 22nd, or does it generally take some time for everything to filter down and settle out?

Hooray another critique my build thread!

I'll be gaming on my NEC FP2141SB, and the two HD's are just for storage purposes since they're so cheap right now. My case is: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16811119068; that should fit the video card okay right?

Sound card for Vista 64-bit (gaming/music)

What would you guys recommend as a good sound card for a new Vista x64/4GB RAM system? I have amped HD580's and listen to my music in FLAC so something that will sound good is a must, but I do also like to game (primarily CS:S and WOW). I currently have an Audigy 2 ZS soft-modded to an Audigy 4...

    Which OS for new build?

I'm planning on putting together a Q6600 system when the price drops hit (running DDR2 and an 8800GTS). I will be doing a considerable amount of gaming on it as well as running a variety of normal applications and was wondering what OS will best serve me. Are NVIDIA Vista drivers still...

    Replacement Cable For HD580's

I'm looking to replace the cables on my HD580's since I've gone through two pairs of the stock cables over the past 2.5 years and both have eventually led to spotty sound on the left side. I use them just on my computer (A2 ZS, cheapo Rolls amp) for gaming and music so I'm not looking to spend a...

    Rate my build!

I heard the Zalman 9700 was a reasonable cooler and wasn't too loud. I was worried about the size of the Scythe or the Tuniq Tower; the case I'm planning on going with is: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16811119106. I play on a 22" NEC FP2141SB and love it.

    Rate my build!

About to pull the trigger on this and looking for some opinions. My main game is CSS (more CPU-intensive than GPU) so I figured I'd get a cheaper video card for now and reevaluate when there are more DX10 options available. CPU: E6600 MOBO: ASUS P5B Deluxe RAM: 2G Buffalo Firestix PC2 6400...

ATI drivers now feature a digital vibrance-like option?

I'm considering going with a x1950PRO to tide me over until more dx10 offerings become available, and have heard that for x1XXX series ATI now offers a driver setting that mimics digital vibrance. Is this the case? If so, does it work as well as digital vibrance? I play a lot of CSS and the game...

    Quick, Easy SLI/Upgrade Question

    Quick, Easy SLI/Upgrade Question

I'm looking to build a new core2duo system (E6600). I currently have an eVGA 7600 GT card and was wondering which of the following would be a better option: SLI a second 7600 GT ($130 more) or purchase a midrange card (7950 GT or thereabouts, around $250). This would be going on an Asus P5N-E...

    Buying nVidia for Digital Vibrance

I've done exactly this in both ATI settings and PowerStrip. It's not even close. The nice thing about digital vibrance is it ups color intensity without increasing shadows/dark spots (which increased contrast does) or washing everything out (which increased brightness/saturation does). Try as...

    Buying nVidia for Digital Vibrance

I play CSS pretty competitively and really LOVE digital vibrance, so I'm planning on switching over to nVidia from an X800XL. I run at pretty reasonable settings (1024x768, high detail but no AA/AF) so I don't need something crazy, but I'd like it to perform at least as well as my current card...

What to do with my Samsung SyncMaster 955DF?

If the antiglare is flaking off you probably won't get much for it. Canalphones for noise blocking

I'm very serious about gaming, but on LAN I'd rather have canalphones. Much easier to transport and I wouldn't have to worry about them getting broken as much as I would with full phones. Canalphones for noise blocking

I'm in the market for a reasonably nice pair of canalphones to take to LAN tournaments. As such the sound quality doesn't have to be great, I'd like the cost to be less than $70 if possible, and I'd like something comfortable that blocks out as much noise as possible. The Shure line sounds...
