    Can't get USB 3.0 speed

I have a PCI-E Renesas/NEC card that won't give USB 3.0 speed with old Seagate GoFlex drives, but it does with other drives. But the GoFlex does give USB 3.0 speed when plugged into the controller built into a motherboard that uses the same Renesas/NEC chip. I've tried 2 of those GoFlex...

Ancient motherboard help (FIC PA-2007 Socket 7)

A friend of mine has an FIC PA-2007 motherboard -- Socket 7, ISA and PCI slots only, AT form factor, can use both SIMMs and DIMMs (but not together). He has to use it because it's one of the few approved for use with some expensive ISA controller cards. The problem is if the CMOS memory is...

    Ripjaws rated too fast?

Here's a review of some Ripjaws X PC17000 (2133 MHz) memory that indicates it's made of overclocked Hynix H5TQ2G83BFR-H9C chips (PC10666, or 1333 MHz): http://aphnetworks.com/reviews/g_skill_ripjaws_x_f3_17000cl9d_8gbxld_2x4gb/2 Or am I reading something wrong?

2 errors considered OK -- manufacturer

One maker of retail DRAM modules said they consider any module slower than 2133 MHz to be acceptable for shipment if it showed no more than 2 errors during factory testing. For their 2133 MHz parts they allow zero errors. Their testing is done with motherboards, not special machines, which...

VIA VT6421A PCI SATA controller firmware

Rosewill has firmware ver. 5.20 and a flash utility that works with all PCI SATA controllers based on the VIA VT6421x chips, but what does this firmware fix? My generic controller came with ver. 4.95. As usual, VIA is mum about this and won't answer anything.

    Maximum voltage for DDR2?

Chip makers give 2.3V as the absolute maximum voltage for DDR2, but many BioStar mobos allow higher voltages for it, as much as 2.837V. If DDR2 is run at that voltage (not that I plan to), how long will it last? BioStar is being weasily with their answers.

    Silicon Image PATA controller

Does anybody know of a BIOS for the SiL680 chip that actually uses the RAID jumper pins to select between RAID and regular modes? I've tried every BIOS from R3220 (RAID) to b3400 (non-RAID), and the jumper setting makes no difference. I did check pin 80 on the chip to see that the jumper was...

    Adding missing SATA connectors?

I have some motherboards designed to handle 4 SATA ports, but they were built with only 2 connectors installed. I'd like to add the missing connectors, but I'd also have to add the missing termination resistors and maybe some capacitors. What values are those parts? Here's one of the...

    Undervolting causes damage?

I phoned Crucial and asked them about the high rate of customer complaints for Ballistix memory modules, and the company actually admitted it was true and blamed undervolting as the cause. They said Ballistix has to be run at its rated voltage of 2.0V or 2.2V, not at the 1.8V default that most...

Why is Crucial not always Micron?

Why is Crucial, which is owned by Micron, a real RAM chip maker, using chips made by other companies? The last Crucial module I bought, a 2GB PC5300 SO-DIMM has Elpida chips on it, and my newest Crucial PC6400 DIMM not only has Samsung chips on it, but apparently the whole module was made by...

Nforce chipset hates PCI HD controller

I have an ECS NForce6M-A ver. 2 motherboard with the 520 chipset, and it doesn't seem to like PCI PATA controllers at all. When my HD (is plugged into one, booting is very slow, with a 15-minute period when the screen goes blank, and when Windows XP finally does boot, it's as slow as sludge...

    Incompatible PCI HD controllers?

I have an ECS nForce6M-M ver. 2 mobo (nForce 520 chipset) and can't boot normally to Windows XP Home from any PATA HD connected to a PCI HD controller (Promise Ultra 100 or Silicon Image 680). I have a 160GB boot disk divided into three FAT32 partitions and connected to a Promise Ultra 100 PCI controller card in an Asrock KTVT4A Pro motherboard based on the VIA VT400 chipset. A few days ago, the third partition suddenly couldn't be accessed from Windows XP Home, except for the...

    Why aren't PSU pins keyed?

On ATX and similar PSUs, the mobo and SLi connectors are supposed to be keyed by the shapes of the pins (square or bevel cornered), but in real life the fit is so loose that you can plug the connector in any way you want, including backwards.

    Drive Fitness Test - buggy?

Has anybody had problems with Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test ver. 4.0x? Because with some mobos, old and semi-new (Socket A, Athlon XP1800+), during drive detection it either aborts or doesn't detect certain drives. In one case, when I had only a 200GB Hitachi HD installed, DFT ver 4.08 said the...

    Questions for AntecRep

    1. What does the second tiny thermistor in SmartPower PSUs do? This is the one on the opposite side of the thermistor and doesn't seem to be involved in fan speed control. I phoned Antec, but nobody there knew. The original SmartPowers ATX ver. 1.3 PSUs didn't have them, but the newer ver...

    ECS Mobo testing methods

Bit-Tech's visit to an ECS mobo factory indicates that only 0.2% of the mobos are tested thoroughly: "Around 1% of the boards produced go through much more thorough testing procedures (that's around 8,000 a month at the Golden Elite Technology campus). These boards are subjected to a 3DMark...

Why Kingston bad but PNY OK?

I've tested several Kingston and PNY budget 512MB PC3200 modules with nForce3 and VIA KT400 mobos, all at their SPD defaults, using MemTest86 3.2 and Gold Memory 5.07. All 5 PNY modules passed every diagnostic, but only 2 out of 10 Kingstons did. What's going on here? All the PNYs have...

Muhua PSU fans -- good or bad?

Ultra and Wintech use them. In one 350W Ultra V-Series, the fan didn't start in 2 out of 20 starts. The other, with a fan that looked identical except for the lack the MH1225MHS model number on the stickers, worked fine in at least 50 starts.

    Are Muhua fans any good?

Ultra/Wintech uses Muhua fans for at least some of their PSUs, and in a 350W Ultra V-Series I found a MH1225M12S. Is this OK, or should I be scared? I'm pretty sure it's a sleeve bearing fan.

CD-RW drive fails in one computer, works in all others

Why would a certain model CD writer work with all mobos, from 486 to 64-bit Sempron, except one certain mobo, and why would that certain mobo work with all other CD and DVD drives? I have a pair of Acer/BenQ 1208A CD-RW drives, BIOS ver. 9.CC, that aren't reliable at all with a Socket 7 FIC...
