    Recommendation For 15 Inch Laptop

I agree on the XPS, but look at the Precision equivalent as well. 512 GB ssd, 16 GB ram and a 1080p screen resolution. Ask the user what applications they use, he/she might have issues with 4k resolution and high DPI scaling. I'm progressing to smaller laptops. I've gone from the m6700, to...

    Dell XPS 12 / 13 / 15 with Skylake

Wonderful! We speak the same language! As a fellow controls engineer our pain is the same! Personally, I love VMs, and while communication issues occur I wouldn't call it a an issue with the host computer. It is typically an issue with configuration settings that hang people up. I've been...

    Dell XPS 12 / 13 / 15 with Skylake

As an engineer myself, the 'engineer' in me says "GET THE XPS/Precision!". I wouldn't say that Apple doesn't support our apps, it's probably more of a case of the apps don't support Apple. After all Apple is a consumer product not really an enterprise product (at least for laptops/desktops), so...

    Dell XPS 12 / 13 / 15 with Skylake

I'm trying to decide between the XPS, Surface Book, and 2016 rMBP. The scaling issues on Windows machines really is holding me back. My current work laptop is a 15" Dell m4800, w/4k display. I love the display, but in Windows 7 you have to adjust the DPI scaling to 200% to make it look right...

OneNote syncing/sharing... Why can't I keep a copy on my HDD?

The OneDrive folder contents are still 'local' to your computer. So moving your notebook to the OneDrive folder is the same as moving it locally to another folder. If you want it to sync, well OneDrive syncs the content in the OneDrive folder.

    Windows Server Essentials Domain

Define "connect" to it. I've just purchased a new Dell server with Server2012 Essentials for a work project, and while it is configured for a domain I can US RDP and shared folders from computers that are not attached to the domain. Granted because it's all in development at the moment I am...

    Noo question... Subnetmasks and gateways

Thanks for the responses, this is for an automation network (device-level control) where static IP addresses are the norm and isolation of the devices is ideal. Due to client restrictions things like VLANs, Layer 3 switches and routers are not allowed. So for setting up the devices just wanted...

    Noo question... Subnetmasks and gateways

Ok I have a single network, but want to setup multiple subnets and for management purposes I want my computer to access all 4 subnets. I have multiple switches and am confused on the gateway configuration or if what I want to do is possible. Subnet 1: 192.168.1.x 255.255.255.0 Subnet 2...

Need hard advice with a build to maximize the number of VMs.

No you don't want to run it this way. Search up on ESXi current version is 5.5. You can get this free from VMWare with some limitations. This is hypervisor you should use. This allows you to install ESXi say on a thumbdrive or SD card. You don't need an OS, you don't need Worksation. You...

Recommend out-of-box Dell server for ESXi development lab

Thought I would post an update, finally ordering this server! I had to buy everything from Dell (limits the red-tape) and the boss wanted some "upgrades". Ended up going with the Dell T-420. The primary reason for the T-420 was that I couldn't use hot-swap drives. Per suggestions I...

VM - VirtualBox of Windows XP help

Doesn't matter. In your OP you said the SOURCE of your Win XP VM was the .VHD specially used for "Windows XP Mode", which I interpret as the "Windows XP Mode" download which is available fro Microsoft and intended for Windows 7 Pro. With that said, while it's intended for Virtual PC to run the...

VM - VirtualBox of Windows XP help

Really doesn't matter what he used, the license to run "XP Mode"is a function of Windows 7 Pro licensing. Windows 8 does not include this feature, therefore the "XP Mode" and subsequent license should be considered invalid. VMWare detects "XP Mode" and allows only a single instance to run at...

VM - VirtualBox of Windows XP help

To my knowledge Windows 8 does not support "XP Mode" hence the reason he is getting prompted for the license. The OP would need to run a Windows 7 VM (which will need a license), then it might be possible to run a nested XP mode VM? Never done it, but a thought if they need XP. Otherwise...

Recommend out-of-box Dell server for ESXi development lab

I would love do have a setup like this, however I know our department isn't ready for that, it would be great to have for a project that requires us to supply HA/Fail over but those don't come around that often 1-2, ever couple of years. Plus, I would assume you would only be able to do...

I've been using it to keep myself educated for my career. I do industrial automation and we are involved in servers, visualization and all that now. Lately I have been reveriting to using the trial edition of the software, and re-arm the trail when it expires. Works for what need I guess...

    VMWare Player vs Workstation

If just using at home, Player pretty much does all you need if you are just dabbing into VMs. If you are doing more, or using it at work then Workstation is the way to go (licensing in a commercial setting). Workstation I sometimes use snapshots, but I am always using the virtual network...

    Windows 8 Poll

I've been running Windows 8 Virtual Image for a couple of months now for a few reasons: 1 - Our corporate IT jumps at anything new, they did with Vista and will do it with Windows 8. I predict it will be rolled out by the end of they year so I want a jump-start to learn in. 2 - Hyper-v is a...

I've been trying to use it in a virtual environment because our company tends to jump to the latest and greatest right away, so I know I'll be running Windows 8 at work by the end of the year. I am surprised, but I like it. I have no need for the metro apps, and no need for the start screen...

    Windows 8 - VMware Workstation 9 - Bridge Wireless??

I respectfully disagree. This is all happening on my work issued laptop, so going as far as adding a second hard drive and dual booting certainly will be frowned upon by the IT department. However it would solve the wireless issue I have, yet is a solution I cannot use.

    Windows 8 - VMware Workstation 9 - Bridge Wireless??

Wondering if anyone has had success running Windows 8 using VMWare Workstation and using a network adapter bridged to a host wireless connection. Seems to be a problem with Windows 8. Windows XP virtual machines don't have any issue so I'm amazed that Windows 8 has a problem. I need to...

How to disable RDP "Login" screen

How to disable RDP "Login" screen

For the RDP lockout you can do this when you "log off" of your RDP session run the command "tscon.exe 0 /dest:console" This will log your RDP session off, and automatically log on the local session. I use this all the time when doing remote support through RDP. Granted they still can't...

    16:10 vs 16:9 - what you prefer?

There is a lot of discussion regarding MONITORS and the various resolutions, and in that aspect if I can get a 27" monitor at 2560 x 1440, I would take it! BUT, I build custom Industrial Automation applications, so a LAPTOP is a must for me. My work laptop is a 2-3 year old 15.4" Dell M4300...
