On that note, 24 is a pretty bad name for a TV show :P
For all we know someone may decide to rename Windows 7 before it ships at the last minute but at this point, it's highly unlikely as they've already released shots of the box art.
xX_Jack_Carver_Xx, an argument analogous to the John Searle's Chinese Room thought experiment would claim your supposed ability to comprehend these phenomena is no more a demonstration of your intelligence than is a complex computer program with a database able to translate questions to...
One of the first principles science (and math) students learn is nothing is obvious. Everything must be questioned and thoroughly analyzed. If you think something is obvious, then you've probably fallen for a fallacy of some sort. This is also why I question the accuracy of IQ tests. Who is to...
This is not strictly true. I own a laptop with a Core 2 Duo T9400 which is a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo with 6MB cache on a 1066MHz FSB. In general, all you can say about the difference between the P series and the T series is the P series is Intel's more efficient line, with a 25W TDP verses the T...
My sister uses a Dell XPS M1330, and it's very light (about 4 pounds) and runs really well. You can configure it for under $1000 on Dell's website. For even light gaming, I'd recommend the Geforce 8400 GS over the integrated graphics.
I love WUXGA. I do a lot of coding on my Dell Studio 15 (with many higher end features like a Core 2 Duo T9400 and the WUXGA display) in two windows side by side. I find it improves my productivity immensely. Yea, the text is really small and it takes some getting used to but I love having a lot...
I find the whole argument about $3000 for each employee so that they can buy HDTVs and stimulate the economy laughable.
1. When did owning an HDTV become a right of every American citizen? Do those 10,000 all really even need or want one? And yes, many (most?) HDTV manufacturers are foreign...
Considering the Internet (and specifically browsing the web) has become the most common application of a personal computer, it only makes sense that a web browser is bundled with the OS. I've never understood people's hate of all things Microsoft and all these lawsuits. It's as if everyone just...
I'm a Canadian who has worked in the U.S. here and there, and I've had to register online with DHS (Department of Homeland Security). It's not much of a hassle, takes about 10 min to fill the form.
Vista search works just fine, if you want to search non-indexed locations, simply check "Include non-indexed, hidden, and systems files (might be slow)". Look up how to do advanced search queries in Vista. With a bit of practice you'll find Vista search is a lot faster and a lot more powerful...
I don't completely agree with the comments people made here. Often you can take advantage of interest free for one year financing. It's pretty sweet as a student if you have an internship lined up for the summer but need a computer now. Pay it off completely after your first paycheck.
This kind of reasoning will only work for the next 4 years or so. As the number of cores in a mainstream machine shifts to 8 or 16, if you need to program for each core individually, chances are, you'll have extremely buggy deadlock and race condition ridden code. The push by Intel and AMD to...
Well, let's put this another way...as the number of cores continues to double every two years, it becomes infeasible to write code for each thread individually; I'm not going to manually write 256 code paths and deal with all the synchronization issues between threads, it's virtually impossible...
That's very impressive, unfortunately I'm not currently in the U.S. and I just bought a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 less than 1 month ago for $119 CAD. At the rate I consume storage, it'll take me about 6 to 8 months to fill up a terabyte, so I'll pick up whatever's the best deal 8 months from now...
Yes, this is a rather technical question that you'd have to ask an OS developer about. However, I'm certain there are instructions that an application/OS can execute to retrieve that information from the processor as there are instructions to retrieve SSE/MMX compatibility information. However...
Windows Vista search still isn't nearly good enough though. I'd like to be able to add tags and other search metadata to all kinds of files (not just documents and photos). I also wish searching through the index was faster...it takes a very long time (several seconds) if you have more than...
I certainly have a need for search. Over the past 15 years, I have accumulated a massive amount of data from tens of thousands of documents to thousands of media files (audio + video files) plus multiple backups and revisions of all my files. This comes out to be over 1,000,000 files consuming...
Suppose I get an E5200 or E7200, what heatsinks would you recommend? I see a few on newegg and other pages, but I'm not sure what's good and what isn't.
I'm looking to build a fanless computer, capable of running Windows Vista x64, I have a budget of $500-$600. I'm not looking for performance here, just silent computing. I'm looking at Intel Atom, Via Nano, Athlon 64 2000+ and the like...can any Core 2 Duos run fanless (maybe with an oversized...
Hello,
So I already have a nice quad-core desktop at home, but I'm going to and from school regularly and I currently have an extremely heavy 15.4" 4-year old laptop that seems to be about to die on me. I do not plan to do any gaming on this new laptop; integrated graphics is probably fine. I...
Agreed, not worth it. You're making a company money (regardless of whether you're an intern or full time employee, you're being productive to some degree) so you deserve to get reimbursed for that work.
I have no objection to going over $400, but I'm also concerned about response time, I don't want ghosting or excessive latency causing sound and video to seem slightly out of sync or bad response in games (however, gaming isn't my top priority, I watch more movies than I play games).
I'm a student so my computer is my complete entertainment/homework system. I'm a computer science major so I like lots of screen space for coding (thus portrait orientation would be nice).
Price is not my main concern but it would be nice if it was under $400.
I want to watch HD...
No, their main office is in Santa Clara, California.
EDIT: Actually looks like they have a lot of offices all over the place.

I disagree, the 9800GTX runs cooler, and uses less power, is equal or or slightly better than the 8800GTX in gaming performance and has better HD decoding support.
I have a Core 2 Duo E6600 currently in my machine. I just purchased a Q6600 that I want to swap into that same machine. The question is, can I do the swap without reinstalling Windows XP + Windows Vista? Anyone try something like this? Thanks.
Jumped on this, upgrading from a Core 2 Duo E6600 (cost me $300 in Nov. 2006!!). Will probably give my E6600 to my parents who've been begging me to build them a new system for ages.
I'm in a similar boat (not wanting to do programming my whole life) but I've got three years on you. I've decided to pursue graduate studies to get myself in an advanced research area, in particular distributed systems and information retrieval. Other hot areas in research include artificial...
