Up until this week I was only using a 48" Samsung 4K HDR 8-series display as my main monitor on my desktop. It was great for HDR and content/text work, and the clarity couldn't be beat, but I just got the Alienware 34" 3440x1440p ultrawide with G-Sync, and game performance is way better. Gaming...
Most companies need high-uptime on their systems, so N+1,or 2 scenarios are pretty common. I run quite a few CiscoUCS/VMware systems, and our utilization on some of the clusters is pretty low overall, but we need extra capacity to account for HA or failover scenarios, so we're not running in an...
Have you tried getting the HP-specific release of ESXi that bundles in drivers, etc? Or are you just using the default download from VMware's site.
If you're just using VMware's image, try the HP install for ESXi and see if that helps. I noticed a few issues when running the standard VMware...
If you're running all local storage, how are you planning on vMotions/HA, or aren't you? Are you planning this? Link
I typically work with pretty large enterprise configurations (Cisco UCS, etc) so we typically have shared SAN storage across larger clusters, and boot-from-SAN or auto deploy...
I mentioned earlier I also use my Mac Mini's HDMI out to display the Plex Home Theater app on my main TV/theater and it goes through a HDMI receiver. It just plays the native MKV from the mac app.
I know that there's transcoding going on when sent to my Roku 3, but I also have that one on a...
I use Plex also. Server runs on an older MacMini (2.4 C2D, 6GB RAM), and it transcodes 1080p just fine, as well as serving up Plex Home Theater app via HDMI.
As for endpoints, I've used Xbox One, Roku, iPad, and web streaming through the Plex website when I'm away from home. It's all been...
I tend to review my games from the sole aspect of whether I really want to finish them, its usually a pass/fail score with consideration of how much fun I had along the way. This game passes the test, I thought it was pretty fun.
A lot of highly rated AAA titles bore me after 5-6 hours as they...
Just got mine this morning from Amazon. It's perfect. Colors are excellent out of the box, no dead pixels.
I use a few ACD's and 27" iMacs at work, and this display is now easily my favorite.
Nintendo. Stop with the gimmicks. Build a system for people who buy more than 2 new games a year for their family. Gamers don't want to stand up and dance, they don't want huge-ass controllers that have screens, they don't want to game in their living rooms like spasmodic monkeys.
Graphics...
I'm not aware of the C-media panel...are you talking about using it with this card? or are you talking about using it with built in mobo sound, or another sound card entirely?
Thanks for the suggestion, Silverghost. I had already done that, but thanks for pointing it out. The software interface for this thing is terrible....I wish they skipped the 90's style window dressing and just made it a normal control panel or windows app.
Hey guys,
Just built a new system and put a Xonar Essence in it. The problem I'm having is that everything sounds "3D" when using headphones....I can't stand it.
I've turned off all effects that I can find, and don't have Dolby headphone enabled at all. I've also selected "plain" under...
I've played most of the ones listed above. They're all good recommendations.
Check out Pilotwings, too. I bought it online, new, for $18 shipped, and it's a pretty fun pick-up-and-play game if you have a few minutes here and there to waste. It's also not very hard, but its worth its cost if you...
Up until a week ago when they ran out, I was buying 3TB Western Digital Essential External drives for $99 at Costco.
I bought 4 of them to fill up a 4-bay QNAP NAS.
Best buy now has that external drive for $259, and if you rip it open, you'll find an internal SATA6 drive that newegg is now...
That's why you buy more than you need and put 4/5 of them in a Raid-5 array to maintain data integrity with a drive failure.
Most likely if/when I would need a replacement at all, we'll be at higher capacities anyway....and all this price fuss will be over.
Since the drives are the same model number of those you buy OEM/Retail from newegg/amazon, I think WD would take care of you during the 1yr warranty. The manufacture date of the drive is May 2011...pretty much proves when you bought it.
If one failed, I'm sure Costco would take it back...I...
I just built a 4x3TB Raid-5 array on a QNAP TS-439PII+ NAS, and the drives cost a total of $436. For 12TB.
4xWesternDigital 3TB USB3 External Drives. Bought for $109 each. Disassembled. Out comes a 3TB Western Digital green drive that sells on NewEgg right now for $259. Amazon is also selling...

My problem with the whole antiquated copyright concept is that they can never define "what" is copyrighted.
Is the story copyrighted? If I tell the friend the plot of the movie is that infringement?
Is music copyrighted? If I hear a song for free at a store or on the radio, and hum it to...
You might look into the PS3 option as well.
I use 2 PS3's as my media streaming devices, sharing from Windows 7 Media Sharing. Works better than all other options I've tried.
It plays 1080p content with ease. Using MKV2VOB (free app), you can de-encapsulate the content from the MKV container...
Yeah, that's exactly why the software companies are on board. They see the $$$$ of no more used game sales. I highly doubt they'll recover any supposed 'pirated' game sales either, because most people who pirate games just do it to play it a few times, and they wouldn't necessary go and shell...
I could see this appealing to the "Wii Crowd". Games that require slower input, like solitaire, chess, card games, etc....this could be a real hit with the geezer crowd.
As far as FPS's though? If it takes even 100ms for my input to get to the server, thats a huge deal. Try playing on a CS/TF...
Yeah pretty much....but after you've seen the difference in manipulating HUGE images (zoom, pan, etc), you probably won't be able to live without those features.
Ok....if you are planning on using Photoshop CS4, GPU DOES matter to a degree..
CS4 actually uses the GPU for some things. (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13580_3-10048014-39.html)
Albeit, you probably don't need a card with dual GPU's in order to take advantage of that, but get a decent single...
I got one of these to use at home for remote work situations, and web surfing, and times when I don't want to have to turn my other systems on.
So far, pretty nice. Of course, reinstalled OS first thing out of the box, don't want to deal with the add-on crap they put in there.
There are no...
I have it...haven't had any problems with mine.
I used it for 360/Wii for a while, as well as some PC gaming. Didn't see much lag problem, and I have it right next to a 245BW...they both look good.
I have the 226BW Revision "A" and it has horrible red tint around any black text.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Color manipulation, etc? I've installed the Samsung monitor drivers, so if there are any other steps to make it better, please let me know before I call for RMA.
I have a Samsung 215TW, its pretty great for inputs, and is a pretty high quality LCD.
DVI, and VGA, along with Component, Composite, and S-video. It has built in speakers (but theyre pretty worthless for anything but Windows 'dings')
The other inputs host my Xbox 360 (via VGA adapter, or...
That Mitsubishi/NEC diamondtron 19" tube is a total lemon.
I've had 3 of them, 1 NEC, and 2 Mitsubishi 19" 930SB's, and they all died, within 2 years, with very mild use.
The NEC refuses to come out of standby mode unless you give it a whack, or reboot the PC. The 2 mitsubishi's both died, one...
Why would someone ever pre-order a game, and pay money to do so. I've never in my life seen a game that was 'sold-out'. If one retailer doesn't have it on launch day, just walk a block down the road, someone else will have it.
Preordering systems is a different story, due to low supply, but...
Just noticed the thread had videos on the last page.
My 215TW looks nothing like that one. First, that one was silver? mine's black....different batch maybe?
Anyway, I've been playing tons of games on mine, and havent noticed any lag like what they showed in the video.
I guess you just...
No problems here on my end, either...
I've played competitive fps for last 10+ years, so I'm a pretty good judge of response time, and havent experienced bad input lag on my 215TW. I came from a 19" Mitsubishi 930SB CRT to this LCD, and haven't had any issues at all.
Maybe some of you are...
I have the 215TW.
I like it, and haven't had any problems with mine. Games look great, everything else is pretty nice too. I looked at the gateway as well, but got the Samsung.
Positives
+Absolutely amazing for text/web/graphics (im a photographer on the side, its awesome for photoshop...
This reminds me of the argument between the english, and metric measurement system.
Feet vs. Meters
When I buy something, lets say a car, I look at the specs, HP, BHP, MPG, top speed, etc, and take those into consideration while "driving" the car on a test drive.
Its the same argument...
Same here. I've been a huge fan of HardOCP since the latter part of the 90's. I've found excellent info here, and always look here first for reviews and comments on parts for PC's, and heavily appreciate everything [H] has presented over the years.
Maybe I just like things simple in nature...
Burnout Revenge, or Burnout 3, both excellent games. Great for Multiplayer, there's also coop stuff for crash mode.
Forza Racing is good for MP, SW: Republic Commandos is kinda cool, Any sports games would be good too, Madden/NCAA 06. Dead or Alive 3, or Dead or Alive: Ultimate are great MP...
It's a good game, but after the initial addiction ends you'll be left bored of it.
Once I hit level 20 there was no more motivation to play (although there was a lot of gameplay left). Once you max out, armor, weapon, etc, theres not really much motivation to continue because the story line...
