I believe that recent versions of OSX just treat everything that isn't explicitly tagged with an ICC profile as if they were sRGB. Haven't personally tried it though.

I guess for me it makes a lot more sense to create minimal previews on import and then manually create 1:1 previews before I start actually working with the photos, usually when I'm doing something else and it doesn't matter how long they take to render. And you don't really need a 1:1 preview...
