Pattern recognition won't get you as far as sound recognition will. Seriously, try it. It works.

The key to picking locks is to listen! The tumblers make a subtle but different sound for when it stays up for a while. If you hear "Tink" don't try to secure it. If you hear "Tuh-Tink" it'll stay up for a while. That's when you secure it.
