A friend is offering me his Dell Dimension 9200, specs below (from the Dell Website). How will this work as an HTPC? I've heard the Pentium Smithfield chip uses a lot of power.
I figure would grab at least 4gig of DDRII ram, and I would need new video card with HDMI out. A new capture...
1) Yes, you might still have reception issues. follow the advice above and learn more at antennaweb.org or tvfool.com.
I went through rabbit ears, and eventually got a radio shack antenna, I forgot the model but it was the 59.99 one, small and white, and I mounted it on some safety bars...
well of course that's the issue, because if i go with the setup i posted, it's micro atx and only one pci-express. which i want to reserve for a tv tuner card later on (when the money allows). Therefore I really need a setup that has built in video enough for blu-ray.
anyone using the AMD...
I'm in a slightly different situation, as I never had cable to begin with, but I just got a new 40" Samsung LCD (woot!) and instead of getting cable, I got this antenna from Radio Shack, which includes bolts for the "don't fall out" window guards. I put it outside and in Brooklyn, on the first...
That was my original reason for going the i3 route, but the amd boards, like the one i linked to above, has a built in radeon 4200, which i think should be powerful enough for 1080p video. I'm not doing any gaming, just looking to build a media center/dvr.
I'm looking at this:
ASUS M4A785-M
Seems powerful enough tied with the cpu recommended above (athalon II X2 240e). And I can throw in the Happague 2250 in the pci express slot in the future.
It's got an ati 4200 which should run blu-ray, 1080p (I could upgrade to a mobo with a 4250...
I'd love some help, I've read a lot of the posts, but I'm still on the fence. I must say that budget is a big issue, as the TV was a huge purchase, but I'm willing to spend a little extra for something i'll be happy with for 2-3 years (unrealistic, i know).
I just got a samsung 40" lcd - i...
thanks for the quick responses, i'm not sure if i want to go messing with the in innards of the laptop, if it was a desktop then no problem, and of course that is the way to go, but I think i'm just going to stick with a stick for now, I like the idea of a chopstick actually. might give it some...
I modded an old dell laptop into a picture frame, except the power button is deep in the box and i have to reach my pinky through a hole i drilled.
I'm looking for something that would allow me to either extend the power button to the outside of the box, or, ideally, a flexible, mountable...
I grabbed an old dell laptop (circa 2001), which is in great condition. I put it in a box, flipped the monitor around and installed slickr. All go. Then I moved it to my apartment and went to enable WPA and discovered that it was a non-service pack edition of XP. I went to update it and...
I'm looking for some reliable memory for upgrading my macbook. I know the stuff is dirt cheap online, but I figured if someone just upgraded to 4gig I could cash in.
It's gotta be pc2 5400 and dual channel.
Thanks!
I haven't posted in a long time, and i've been using a macbook, so i'm pretty out of the loop on most things. I need to upgrade the HD, get two external enclosures (one 2.5" for the old HD as a spare, and one 3.5" to put a backup into), and one 3.5" drive to serve as a backup and movie store...
I second the logitech. I have a bluetooth combo, and while I only use the mouse (i'm abroad for a year), it's great not to have to plug it in, and I plan on using the keyboard when I get home.

I'm currently living in Israel for the year, and after renting a dvd from blockbuster I was reminded that DVD's have region codes. Is there any software, SAFE firmware, or anything of the sorts that can make my dvd player region free? I have some american dvd's that I watch as well, otherwise...
I'm not sure if this belongs in General Hardware or here, but I'm looking for some advice about a skype wi-fi phone. Ideally I'd get a cell/wi-fi combo, so i'm open to those ideas as well (must be GSM). Has anyone used these? Thanks!
Optional, thanks so much, this worked perfectly. It's also very customizeable, allowing me to assign any buttons on the mouse as I choose and can even do application-specific settings. Problem solved.
I have the logitech mx laser bluetooth, and it works perfectly with my macbook. However, there is no software for the mac and therefore I can't get the front/back buttons to work. Does anyone have a workaround for this? Thanks.
i would be willing to split it up. the drive is PATA, I'm not 100% sure about the ram, though I belive it is crucial. The dvd drive is an 8x panasonic. Send me a pm with everything you want and how much you want to spend and we can try and work something out.
This computer works great but i'm leaving the country and it has to go. pickup available in new york city. I have also listed prices for parting it out
AMD Athalon XP 2700+ (2.1 ghz) - $50
768 mg ddr ram (3x256) - $25 per stick
80 gig hd - $40
DVD Drive - $30
CD burner - $20

can someone go into more detail about upgrading the hd of a macbook? Clearly spending an additional 125 seems ridiculous for 40 gig of space. I didn't think about buying the cheapest and upgrading it myself. is it a standard hd? does it kill my warrenty (on the hd yes, but on the whole...
So I'm about to buy a macbook and I will be overseas for a year. Skype is by far the most cost-effective voip calling service. They advertise Motorola's "computer skype" headset, which comes with a bluetooth dongle. Can I use any bluetooth headset or do I have to use this specific one?
Has...
I'm about to purchase a mac book(probably at the end of february (i'm really excited).
I'm thinking about getting the wireless mighty mouse, i've heard good things and it looks bad ass. so the quesiton, i currenty have a cordless mx duo (with the mx700, i'm old skool i guess at this point)...
