I ran Cinebench on all CPUs I could

I ran the test on an Intel Skylake i3-6100. This and the Haswell are my two only "modern" CPUs. 954 points is pretty good I find compared to an older i5-4570 with 4 cores (6100 has 2 cores).

Intel: low prices and sold out CPUs

Is this an early indication they want to come out with Comet Lake? Because I read there's some kind of delay because they're not satisfied with the power consumption of higher-end Comet Lake CPUs. Their i3-9100F and Pentium G5400 which I find would be very acceptable for Internet...

I ran Cinebench on all CPUs I could

Well, 1221 points for an Intel i5-4570 which I find pretty good for a CPU I bought in December 2014 (5 years old).

If you buy a cheap CD Key...

Well, for what it's worth, I read the reason some are sold cheap is because they're surplus keys from businesses who sell them to resellers.

    Video acceleration in browsers

I read they just recently started to experiment on Chromium to allow hardware acceleration in browsers. Do you find this takes away from the appeal of Linux (free, open source)?

No I might in a few days because I know I'll tell myself later why didn't I use Win7 until the last day. lol

If you buy a cheap CD Key...

Since I read some textbooks on the social sciences, I prefer to try to stay objective. That being said, this user had lots of positive feedback on eBay, even for the CD keys. In reality, I had a somewhat peculiar reason for this key. I wanted one to use in a 5 year old machine and install it...

If you buy a cheap CD Key...

Oh, I didn't even think of checking here. I hope some sold here are unused or at least retail. My understanding is OEM is tied to the hardware. The thing is, I didn't even try activating it yet. Then I noticed the person is no longer a registered user. At least I know I can try several...

If you buy a cheap CD Key...

I mean the seller was just deleted on eBay and the item removed. I find this a bit alarming. Anyway, if my copy of Windows won't work, what's my first step? (I know about asking for a refund but... this is weird as it's an OS.)

Intel Comet Lake build lol (planning ahead)

Even though the Comet Lake CPUs have not come out yet (nor the Ryzen 4000), I'd like to add this. There's a post here about interpreting benchmarks: https://hardforum.com/threads/am-i-looking-at-benchmarks-the-wrong-way.1991294/#post-1044449841 and one about desktop snappiness (even though...

Intel Comet Lake build lol (planning ahead)

I might wait for Rocket Lake to come out to get the next generation 12 iGPU. Looking at the Comet Lake i3-10300, I find it pretty interesting: 3.7GHz instead of 3.2GHz for my i5-4570, 2667MHz RAM instead of 1600MHz, 8MB L3 cache instead of 6MB. But it still has UHD 630 compared to HD4600...

Am I looking at benchmarks the wrong way?

Why are people saying AMD is largely superior across the board when the i3-9100F is superior to the Ryzen 5 2600 and Ryzen 5 3400G? https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i9-9900ks/14.html

    Can you benchmark desktop "snappyness"?

I read someone insisting Intel CPUs are snappier on the desktop. How would you even test this?

"Intel in jeopardy" from insiders. Much much worse than what they tell.

If you've had both Intel and AMD in recent years, can you confirm if Intel CPUs are faster on the desktop (like closing/opening windows)? Because leaks on the Comet Lake look promising (even if Ryzen 4000 CPUs are around the corner as well). I may consider the i3-10300.

In market for new PC speakers

Does anyone know what the ideal distance for the soundstage is for the JBL One Series 104? I tried different distances and it looks to me to be maybe 5 feet but I'm not an audiophile. I looked at the web site and it looks like they're going to sell the two models side by side. The original...

    Unable to lock directories /var/cache/apt/archives

Thanks for the help but I re-installed because I did something somehow that caused the computer to go to sleep instead of a complete shut down. This resulted in losing the dual-boot and couldn't get back into Windows.

"Intel in jeopardy" from insiders. Much much worse than what they tell.

Before reading this article, I would have considered a Rocket Lake next year (maybe in December 2020). Of course this makes me pause but I wonder if AMD will simply raise prices.

    Horrible SSD performance

OK, I guess I can laugh at myself now because I think this may be "user error". I just tried CrystalDiskMark on that machine. I clicked to download the Vista file and clicked on All to test. Anyway, here's the result: top speed 253MB/s

    Horrible SSD performance

UPDATE: I'm now running dual-boot Win8.1 & Linux Mint both in 64-bit. I finally was able to run a benchmark with this: sync; dd if=/dev/zero of=tempfile bs-1M count=1024; sync So, I saw 264 MB/s which I think should make sense for the Kingston A400 SSD. Now, in Windows 8.1 64-bit I'm still...

    Unable to lock directories /var/cache/apt/archives

OK, actually for whatever reason I re-installed Linux Mint and all of a sudden I was able to install Opera. Anyway, I'm going to do another thread on an odd message I got.

    Unable to lock directories /var/cache/apt/archives

What's going on? I can't install Opera in Linux Mint because I first have to install sudo apt install msttcorefonts. That can't install because of the error message. EDIT: Uh, actually now it says: "Waiting for apt to exit".

Lost the picture thingy in Win8.1

Well, when you click on start, you usually see like a picture of a sunflower above "Documents, Pictures, Music"... Now it's like a white symbol of a man with a black background. I'd like to change it back.

Lost the picture thingy in Win8.1

I know this sounds like a minor thing but want to know if I can change it. I installed classic shell in Win8.1 and right-clicked on My Documents to try to copy to put the My Documents icon on the desktop. Well, the sunflower picture is gone. Anyone know how to put it back?

Linux Mint on Abit AT8 32X (socket 939)

Oh yeah. It's an old machine I can use to try things I'm too afraid to do on another machine. Like clicking on an unknown link or even trying "classic shell". By the way, that classic shell is really cool to me. I thought about trying to learn how to use the regular Win8.1 desktop but found...

In market for new PC speakers

I don't know who to believe on this one but some say you should put them directly on the desk for better bass, others say they should be put on acoustic foam for better highs. In any case, I ended up looking in my boxes of "stuff" to find something to put under them. I put the speakers on top...

Linux Mint on Abit AT8 32X (socket 939)

Cool, I just installed Win8.1 in 64-bit. So, what did I notice? Unreal Tournament can now install inside the Epic Games launcher. However, I got a message saying the Nvidia driver I'm using has issues. So I tried installing newer versions and all had messages saying the (newer) drivers were...

In market for new PC speakers

Just want to make a note that the new BT model of the JBL One Series 104 is the new model. Oddly enough, they're still lying about the size of the driver, it's 3 and a half inches, not 4 and a half inches as advertised. :D (EDIT: To be fair, assuming they didn't change the size they would be...

Linux Mint on Abit AT8 32X (socket 939)

Uh, I mean I have 2 operating systems and both had messages certain programs wouldn't install. I think it's due to them both being 32-bit. I think the browsers/games were in 64-bit.

    Horrible SSD performance

Well, do you like Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop? I read that one is the most similar to Windows 7. I was kind of hoping it was. Does anyone here think installing in 64-bit is better for compatibility with various programs. I'm not sure if even some browsers are made in 32-bit now.

Linux Mint on Abit AT8 32X (socket 939)

I just tried a dual-boot Linux Mint & Windows 8.1 on an Asus M3A78-EM with Athlon 5400+ dual-core with 2GB of RAM. I installed both in 32-bit and actually got messages saying "cannot install...". Is it possible because I installed in 32-bit instead of 64-bit? I mean even free games would not...

In market for new PC speakers

OK, I'd like to add a few words here that may not count for much since I'm not an audiophile. I read the vast majority of cinemas use JBL speakers. This is one of the reasons why I chose the JBL One Series 104. However, I've already said they're not louder than the Creative T20. So, if...

Linux Mint on Abit AT8 32X (socket 939)

I'm just asking before I try it. Does anyone know if Linux Mint will find the drivers for this? It had an Xpress 3200 chipet. Do you think I should try in 32-bit or go ahead and install in 64-bit anyway?

    Horrible SSD performance

OK, I managed to install Linux Mint and it's dual-boot. I thought this might be real cool until I noticed I have no idea how to get things done in Linux. I tried downloading several benchmarking software and when I click to run the installation files, nothing happens. And I don't know where...

    Horrible SSD performance

To recap, I have the latest BIOS I'm running Windows 8.1 32-bit on an Asus M3A78-EM I got into safe mode, changed to AHCI in BIOS. Ran a couple of tests from userbenchmark.com and got the following: one ran in AHCI and one in SATA mode in BIOS and both gave the same score of around 120 MB/s...

    Horrible SSD performance

OK, I'm going to try to check that out. I have the latest 2701 BIOS but found the AMD 780G chipset driver which I installed after installing Windows 8.1 in 32-bit. Apparently, that motherboard did better in 32-bit. Anyway, for now the benchmark test showed 155MB/s which is like double what it...

    Install Windows fromUSB

Can I directly transfer an ISO file onto a USB flash drive and double click on it to install Windows? EDIT: OK, apparently you need to install a tool on your flash drive. But it says it formats your drive. Once I install Windows though, can I use the full capacity of the drive?
