So I work as a tech at a IT shop that also does fix it work and I have to say I just don't get the hate on windows 10. Do updates fail? Yes they do and I'll be the first to admit that it's 10's biggest Achilles' heel. That being said in my experience over 50% of the failed updates are due to one...
MOST of the aftermarket batteries you find on Amazon or Newegg etc are questionable. I don't think these batteries have been sitting on a shelf at all, many of these are salvaged/refurbs.
That being said you'd have as much (if not better) luck going with a used pull for the $30
So... Intel is once again the "fastest". Just that you wont be able to actually, you know, buy one . Yeah, totally not vaporware.

Wasn't there a new blurb in the last day or two that already stated that Skylake and newer weren't affected to nearly the same level as the older silicon? IF that was true then what we are seeing is simply Intel marketing showing best case scenarios with their breakdown. Not saying it's the end...
There isn't an easy way to keep going down the path to repairing your MBR. I'd just use your repair and you should be able to do a refresh keeping your files; have to reinstall programs but it'll be quicker in the long run.
If a primary use is browsing I'd be hard pressed to recommend XP, not much in the way of browser support nowadays (not to mention security issues inherent with an EOL product). I'd say windows 7 would run fine on that, see it all the time. If you're feeling a bit more adventurous then pick from...
Sounds like a run of the mill malware re-direct. Instead of manually locating it I'd recommend the following:
1.Download ADWCleaner (Bleeping Computer is a great source for all these btw) and run
2. Download HitmanPro and run
After the two programs run and clean your system your should be back...
