2600k is a lost battle today. I run a 2600 non-k, on a z77 M5F and the only reason I got it, is that it has updated bios available to boot from nvme. Since then I moved to x99 and will gift that z77 to my GF which runs a C2D.

Get a X5675 and overclock by increasing the fsb. It is a bargain on ebay. It has 95w tdp so a good ovc candidate, 4.0 ghz easily doable. Your 970 has 130w tdp. Applying the latest bios prior to update is a must.

If you don't plan to boot from the drive you can get a nvme drive onto an adapter and it will work just fine as any other drive. I would't do a raid 0 for a drive where i would install my games.
