I've been prompted for the hardware survery extremely regularly, it definitely isn't the most reliable data in the world but I'm yet to see ONE coherent argument that can justify why such an inherently random and uncontrolled trial can result in such a strong skew towards nvidia.

Its far from accurate, but it does give you a very rough estimate of the framerate, you could count the tears frame by frame and get an idea of it lol. Your could also just wait a month :p

Not really, each tear represents the gpu reading a partially written frame from the buffer , so you can at least say that the gpu render x times as many frames in one screen refresh
