In hopes of getting the degraded system mounted Im thinking I might try to locate the problem drive, shut down the system, disconnect the drive and reboot the system.
Hopes would be that the lsi sas controller will respond better with no drive...

For the public share I had selected guest access which seems to work except for the copy problem for the VHD file. Any ideas what might be going wrong here? Any way to force windows to ask me for credentials so I could access the share as root?

I have two ZFS file systems, a vmshare that is an NFS/SMB share and a general data partition.
Im using the system in home environment and dont care about setting up file...

I tried disabling sync on my NFS share and the performance got much better but still looks suspicious. The transfer rate starts out at the ~120MBPS (about the same as the vm stored on local share) but then it oscillates in transfer speed...

Thanks for the suggestions, trying the VM copy was a good idea.
Tried the file copy to virtual machine and speed was much better 55MB/sec so it looks like it is something with the ESXi physical hardware adapter or internal switch.
Physical NIC is already upgraded to an intel 82574L pci express...
