Kinda getting away from the direction this thread is going in, but in my mind this is a perfect way to "modularize" the Flex ATX power supplies (specifically the 500W FSP) without resleeving, cutting cables or voiding warranties. Anyone this this will/won't work?
You can get an adapter from BPlus that allows you to convert the M.2 slot on an Intel NuC board to a x4 PCIe slot. I don't know if this would meet your needs, but worth looking into. There was a buildlog on here a couple months ago that outlined how this worked.
AsRock's new Skylake NuC specs are out and it looks like a PCI 3.0 U.2 slot will be available on it (x4). Bodes well for future iterations of this build.
Have you thought about powering the NuC via the Auxillary power connector under the 2260 to 2280 part of the M.2 card? Wondering if you could get that running from another splice.
Doesn't do M.2 and ExpressCard and mPCIe are both limited to 1x PCIe 2.0 lane which doesn't give very satisfactory performance. Add to that a bulky and inflexible cable and a bulky and large base and it's a pretty crappy option for a small form factor PC.

I already have the both the B and M key M.2 adapters from BPlus, an M.2 extender board a Galax GTX 970 OC Short Form (193mm), HDPlex 250 and all the other bells and whistles to do this build. I will be getting the new i7 NuC when it ships on May 10th and am in the process of having the case...
