NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Since some folks are making suggestions for V2. I thought I would chip in my two cents. Frankly the case is extremely well designed so I am having to dig pretty deep here :) I can only think of two things that I don't like with the current design. 1) I don't like the NCASE badge on the front...

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

I was one who complained about the NB fan. It seems that some units are either louder than others or some people are more sensitive :) I'd suggest if you decide to get the NB fan, get it from somewhere that will take returns, and run the fan so you can listen to it before you go to the trouble...

I went with the i7-4770 cpu. And it might make you feel better to know that the OSX install guide on tonymacx86 will have you disable VT-d in your BIOS before installation, so you are probably not missing out on anything.

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

It's likely that I was unlucky and received a loud NB fan. I have heard from others that have had the same problem. Yet most don't seem to get loud ones. I am sure it wasn't hitting a wire as I ran it separately and it makes the same noise.

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

I tried the noiseblocker fan and found it to be pretty loud. I ended up mounting a 25mm thick fan on the outside and flipping the power supply around. The first time I did this and got it back together the psu was making a vibrating noise. Had to take it all apart again and luckily it was gone...

What optical drives are people using in their Ncase? It looks like the Panasonic UJ-265 is an option. However I was wondering if there were other/cheaper options... I personally don't need to burn blurays, just read my existing collection of dvds.

    ST45SF-G Fan Replacement

That is good to know. I had tried to run my 80mm Scythe fan off the power supply header but it appeared to not work, so maybe I will have to have another go at it.

Nice, the Kama fans are awesome. I am very happy with mine. Hm yeah it uses push pins, it is not a great design. I like the heatsink itself, but I had a ton of trouble with the push pins when I mounted it. As far as I can tell, they are the same as on the stock Intel hsf, you push down till...

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Its a Gigabyte GTX 770. It is quiet at load, but has some coil whine when rendering. So I am not sure I would recommend it.

    ST45SF-G Fan Replacement

That sucks, but I am glad to know I am not alone. I ended up removing the internal fan and mounting a quiet 80mm fan on the outside (25mm thick so it wouldn't fit inside). It is dead silent now at < 800rpm. My ears are finally happy :D

The stock fan in the power supply was my biggest source of noise. I tried replacing it with the NoiseBlocker 80x15mm fan other people have used, but my NB fan was making a ticking noise that was just about as annoying as the stock fan. So my solution was to remove the fan from inside the power...

    ST45SF-G Fan Replacement

So I tried it and the PSU runs fine without the fan connected, in case anyone else is interested. Also I did the NoiseBlocker fan swap. Is anyone else's NB fan kind of loud? It's an improvement from the old fan for sure, but mine makes a low frequency ticking noise that is pretty annoying. At...

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

I can't agree more. I first had an EVGA model with the Nvidia reference blower heatsink, which had fairly loud coil whine. Then I tried the Gigabyte GTX 770, which was less loud, but still enough to be annoying. I've returned both and I'm waiting on a replacement EVGA currently... If the...

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Well I'm on my second GTX 770, first one had terrible coil whine, second has less but still plenty to be annoying. Anyone else have this problem? Are there any solutions besides getting a replacement and crossing my fingers?

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Thanks for the advice. I swapped out the Nexus 120mm fans for some Scythe Kama Flow 120mm (FDB bearing), not sure that makes a huge difference. Also I put a brick under the feet of my case to lift it off my desk a few inches and now my GTX 770 stabilizes at 80C. So that is at least a 20C+...

    ST45SF-G Fan Replacement

Has anyone tried running this powersupply without the fan connected? I was thinking of removing the internal fan and mounting a quieter 80mm fan on the outside. It is not a PWM fan so I would be powering it off of the motherboard. Just wondering if it has some failsafe mode where it won't run...

Thanks for that adapter link and the fan suggestions. Does your GPU temp stabilize? I basically cannot play any intensive 3d game currently as the core GPU temp hits 90+ within about 10 minutes and shows no signs of slowing down.

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Pictures are my favorite parts of this thread so I thought I would contribute mine. This has a Gigabyte GA-Z87N-WIFI motherboard with i7-4770. Heatsink is the Scythe Samurai ZZ with fan removed. Video card is the Gigabyte GTX 770, also with fans removed. White fans are Nexus 12cm max...

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Does anyone have any suggestions for a quiet graphics card that will suit the NCASE? I've tried an EVGA GTX 770 with the Nvidia blower style cooler. That works well in terms of getting the heat out of the case, but its pretty loud in more intensive games. I also tried a non-reference design...

Actually it was directed towards the post by balance101 on the previous page, I failed at quoting things properly, but it kind of works as a reply to your post too :) If you were to have bottom intake fans I think the thing to do would be to remove the gpu fans since the intake fans are...

How does your video card do down there with the 120mm fans?

Is there room for a 80x80x25mm fan or does it need to be 80x80x15mm?

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Has anyone tried a Kingwin STR-500 power supply in the ncase to see if it fits? And if so, is there enough clearance for a video card?

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

Hmm thanks. I assume the problem was it got too hot? I guess my backup plan is to swap in a bigger GPU heatsink, something like the Accelero Xtreme iii. I was hoping to avoid that as it is such an expensive heatsink.

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

I'm trying to come up with a silent GPU setup for my ncase. The best I have come up with so far is to use a GTX 770, probably the EVGA one with their custom ACX cooler, and remove the fans in favor of two low-rpm 120mm fans mounted on the bottom of the case. Seems like I should be able to get...
