I just want to do this in the "clean" way.
I'll try to explain better: if I run 'umount /my/raid/mountpoint' and then I use md0 as iSCSI backstore (which should work, I have not tried yet) what happen if I run 'mount /dev/md0 /my/raid/mountpoint' after some time?
So my question is: how can I...
thank you for the explanation, it's very helpful have this stuff explained outside from the technical documents.
my plan is
esxi1+opensm (hca0,ib0) <------------------------> (hca0,ib0) storage
esxi2+opensm (hca0,ib0) <------------------------> (hca0,ib1) storage
so I should have no problems...
to be completely honest I have still some problems to understand how opensm works.
I mean, the theory is "easy and obvious" but in practice I'm not sure how opensm works and what exactly I have configured.
maybe it's normal and I have just to practice more..
about the mtu I was pretty...
good point, at some point I thought the same thing and checked that opensm on the storage node was not running but the problem was something else, as said earlier
HYPERV1 is the name of my VMware vSphere ESXi host, it's not a Microsoft HyperV server :D
the MTU mentioned in the devinfo output is 4096 but in ifconfig ib1 is 2044.
since I'm running IPoIB and I'm a ib newbie I'm not sure what exactly the 4096 in devinfo means, I suppose this is for...
Thank you dasaint, I have solved using older mellanox drivers but I will try on a test node as you suggested. Anyway the inbox drivers needs to be installed anyway? I install them after the mellanox?
If you have time and want to take a look there: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1846599...
Hi,
I'm trying to install the latest Mellanox OFED drivers on a ESXi 5.5 host but I get a dependency error
/tmp # esxcli software vib install -d /tmp/MLNX-OFED-ESX-1.8.2.4-10EM-500.0.0.472560.zip --no-sig-check

currently I'm running
2x WD RED 3TB (RAID1) for my NAS data
2x WD RE4 1TB (RAID1) for VM (exported via NFS and iSCSI)
As you can imagine I have some performance limits because of the limited IOPS/Seq. speed I have from a single WD RE4.
Moreover the RS814 does not support VAAI, SSD cache and...
I'm replacing my Synology RS814 with this more powerful and flexible solution
- Supermicro X10SLH-F
- Core i3-4130T
- 16GB DDR3 1333 ECC
- 4x WD RE4 1TB (RAID10) (ore more..)
- 2x Crucial MX100 512GB (RAID1)
- Mellanox ConnectX2 IB (40Gigabit)
The Hard Drives will store all my "NAS"...
thank you all for the suggestions.
bds1904 thank you for spending some time for a complete config.
Update: I have got 3x ConnectX-2 IB/VPI (40Gbit) + cables and I have also another server with very similar hardware of the esxi nodes, the only difference is the CPU which is a nehalem E5530...
Hi,
In my homelab I have a 2-node esxi 5.5 cluster (E5620 + 24GB RAM each).
The shared storage is provided by a Synolgy RS814 (NFS) with 4x WD RE4 1TB (Raid10).
Link aggregation bound on the NAS, LAG group on the Cisco SG300 and IP Route based balancing on the vSwitch. Everything works...
Hi,
I'm trying to understand if I can run my Opteron 3320 EE on the Supermicro H8SCM-F motherboard.
The Supermicro specs on the website only says
this means the 3300 serie is not supported or since the 4000 is supported "of course" the 3300 it is?
I'm looking for a SSD to use in my home ESXi server.
I plan to store on it the vCenter appliance and a couple of VMs.
250/256GB should be enough.
Suggestions? Could the Crucial MX100 be ok?
I don't see why the GPU should "care" if the VM was brought down "cleanly" or not
If a game crashes on a gaming PC, the GPU of that PC just stops executing the code so should be the same if a VM crashes, the GPU just stops doing the VM stuff.
wrong for you maybe
I have 4xWD RE4 1TB in my ESXi host and I can hear them very well but I can't hear the 4x WD RED 3TB in the Synology NAS.
after all the specs are clear
WD RE4 3TB
Acoustics
Idle Mode 31 dBA (average)
Seek Mode 0 34 dBA (average)

Power Dissipation...
the always running stuff is "only" (from the bottom)
the UPS :p
the Synology RS814 (4x 3TB WD RED - RAID10)
the first Supermicro, which is my ESXi 5.5 single node (E3 1230V, 32GB RAM, 4x 1TB WD RE4 - RAID10 +some 2.5 500G 7200)
the Cisco SG300-10
the rest is too powerful/noisy/power...
Hi,
I'm building a Plex Media Server and I'm not sure which hard drives buy.
I'm looking for 4 drives (in RAID 10). They should be able to sustain about 4-5 simultaneous 1080p (8Mbit) video streams.
What you think about the WD Purple series? They are optimized for video surveillance but...
looks like a Slot1 Celeron with some kind of clip to keep it in the socket (?)
I never seen nothing like that. Could be a prototype?
edit: ok should be just a normal slot 1 celeron like that:
I must correct: I never seen a slot 1 heatsink like that :D
What about VMware vSphere Essentials Kit (837.20 USD) and then use vSphere Data Protection?
edit: uhm looks like the essential does not include Data protection (link). Can't find how much it costs as stand-alone..
Hi, not sure if this is a network topic, anyway...
I have the following stuff
- Synology RS814 with 2x 1Gigabit interfaces (4x 3TB WD Red drives, Raid 10)
- Custom ESXi server with 2x 1Gigabit free interfaces
- CISCO SG-300-10 Layer 3 switch
What I want to archive
I would like to...
I have to buy a storage server for a vmware cluster.
The budget is about $20K.
We already have an EMC Isilon as main storage, so this will be just in case of any problem with the isilon.
The usable space should be at least 10TB, with 10K rpm drives in RAID10 (no raid5-6 etc.)
ideas?
new toys for my home lab :)
Mostly Xeon E5506 (Nehalem), 66GB 1333ECC REG, 3x X8DTN+ and 1x X8DTE-F.
will merge into 3 servers, 2 dual processore and one single
