    Temp a RAIDZ2 With a Smaller Drive

I'm not sure I even know how to use zfs on a partition in Solaris. I wish I did though, because I would like to do something similar and temp a mirrored pool with two 1.5TB drives and swap them out for 1TB drives later. I literally have a pile of old 1.5TB drives that have "some" life left in...

    NAS operating system and ESXi?

I just recently started using an all in 1 server, I even put my pfSense router in it. I was worried about that at first but I'm loving it! I just use Solaris 11.1 for my storage server. It didn't take much work to figure out basic sharing and such. I tried napp-it but I wasn't much of a fan. As...

    Temp a RAIDZ2 With a Smaller Drive

I have 5x 3TB drives that I want to use in a RAIDZ2 pool for photo & video backup. The pool will rarely get used for much so I'm not really all that worried about speeds / performance. I would like to create the pool with those (5) 3TB drives and (1) 1.5TB drive for now until I get a matching...

FCoE CNA Protocol? (Solaris 11.1 & ESXi 5.1)

Just fyi... These Brocade 1020's seem epic, but installing drivers / firmware... is not fun. The documentation pretty much stinks. It's full of links back to the same page you downloaded it from.

RAID card for 4 x VelociRaptor RAID 0?

SSD would out preform your VR's. That's your best bet unless you are doing something with video or some other very large files. If that's the case then something such as LSI's MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i.

OCZ Vertex 4 at 256GB OK for a server RAID 1?

I have had nothing but luck with my Vertex 4 drives. They had a bit of a bad rep for a while, but that was just because of the droves of people that couldn't update the firmware... As far as specific hardware compatibility I couldn't speak to that.

FCoE CNA Protocol? (Solaris 11.1 & ESXi 5.1)

Oh, no, everything I listed I have. Some of it was donated, some of it I bought or is repurposed for this project. I may end up needing to replace some of this hardware with supported hardware, but it's looking like I should be GTG. I'm still trying to figure out if I can even direct connect 2...

Little help with 6 disk ZFS configuration

Agree, raidz does have redundancy, but what if a drive does fail? Your next step is surely to swap it out. So right as your system is getting hammered as hard is the internal hardware is able to support... you have zero redundancy. That's bad.

    Looking for a hard drive

Agree! HDD is by far the biggest bottle neck in a desktop/home computer today. You wont necessarily get a direct boost in FPS, but it will help against freeze frames where the graphics card is waiting for the digital descriptions for what it needs to render. The entire game does not load into...

Storage Server: If it were you

I agree, ZFS all the way. If you care about the data then it should be on ZFS, nothing else even comes close. Depending on how you configure the drives you're just barely within best practices. You'd get more use out of more RAM than a 2nd CPU. As far as configuration of the raid: RAID-Z...

FCoE CNA Protocol? (Solaris 11.1 & ESXi 5.1)

    1) Lot's of things. MythTV has 7 HD tuners and I may be adding (3) with another HomeRun Prime. Plus transcoding. Plus possibly the streams coming out to front ends. 4-5 security cameras. The bandwidth for all the boot drives for all my VMs will come thorough here. To name a few. I'm looking at...

    Disk controller recommendations

There are many 3TB drives listed as supported: http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/Host%20Bus%20Adapters/Host%20Bus%20Adapters%20Common%20Files/LSI_6Gb_SAS_SATA_HBA_Compatibility_List.pdf Sounds like you have a working card though grats. I was not so lucky with my 9240-8i. I just ordered my...

What is the BEST OS for home media server?

I would say that is a half truth... maybe even less. If you are browsing the web, downloading / installing things, and so on then yes you are bound to run into memory leaks and other fun things that might bog down your system. I ran Windows 7 Pro N with only a hand full of things installed...
