Any OS, could be ESXi, KVM on Fedora, etc.
I don't have the CPU yet, I'm asking to know if it works before I purchase. I figure somone must have tried this before.
I've been looking all over the internet for information on if it's possible to do passthrough on the integrated GPU on the Ryzen 2400G to a Windows VM, but I haven't been able to find anything at all.
If someone has the CPU, could you maybe to the internet a favor and see if it works?
I'm looking to reconfigure my all-in-one because I'm going to do some (light) GPGPU calculations in Linux on it as well. I would also like to be able to use Windows VMs with hardware accelerated graphics (not at the same time of course).
Up until now I've been using SmartOS and I love it, but...
Hi!
I'm running a ZFS NAS with a 3x 2TB RAIDZ-1 setup. The machine has 8GB of RAM. I store mostly photos and documents, as well as some bigger files such as some disk images. It also hosts a few virtual machines.
Would I gain anything by using a spare 120GB SSD I have laying around for...
Has anyone every thought about creating an all-in-one (similar to this) but using ZFS on Linux, Docker and Shipyard instead of ESXi and a ZFS capable VM?
I find it intriguing but I'm a bit too lazy to try it out. Has anyone else thought about this?
Hi!
I'm looking for some sort of service that will allow me to backup a couple of 100GB of photos and documents to the "cloud". Something like CrashPlan, but that has proper support for Linux (i.e. a real headless client) and preferably isn't written in Java.
I've been looking around for...
Hi!
I'm just wondering if anyone know if SmartOS still has a future or if Joyent has given up on it? I'm wondering since there haven't been any updates on their blog for many months now.
Any news?
Best regards
ultra
I have been trying to google it all day but haven't found anything (except the link above, making it look like an external device). Anyone else?
Thanks everyone so very much. :)
Thanks for your replies! They are very helpful. :)
I looked into it and my hardware doesn't support IOMMU (HP ProLiant MicroServer N40L). The question therefore is; what is the best way to forward the disks to a VM for ZFS without IOMMU (PCI passthrough)?
Ubuntu, ZFS on Linux and XCP on...
Hi
Simply and quick question. Is there any way to give a VM direct disk access under XenServer/XCP?
Is this solution safe enough for passing through 6 disks for RAIDZ2 to an OmniOS VM? http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/XCP_DirectDiskAccess
Thanks in advance
I'll give it a go. :) Thanks!
What alternative would you suggest (other than the already mentioned Proxmox VE)? The solution being "free" (like how ESXi is "free") is a must for me. Web GUI is also a big plus.
Would this one work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-LSI-Logic-SAS3042E-HP-4-port-SAS-SATA-PCIe-Adapter-447431-001-Low-Profile-/300876327414?pt=US_Server_Disk_Controllers_RAID_Cards&hash=item460da069f6
Or this one...
Hi.
I'm just wondering if anyone is using OpenStack for a private cloud type of thing? What does your setup look like? What hardware are you using? How have you setup OpenStack? What hypervisor(s) are you using?
I'm thinking of setting up something similar.
I have two questions related to ZFS.
1. I know the optimal RAIDZ configuration is 3, 5, 9, and so on, drives. But I have an HP N40L which takes four (4) non-hot plug SATA drives. How much of a performance and/or stability penalty is there for using four (4) drives in a RAIDZ configuration...
I would like to do some ESXi laborations, though. Is there any logical way to run storage on one machine, and ESXi on both machines?
Maybe ZFS on Linux + ESXi on KVM on the "storage machine" (or FreeBSD + ESXi on VirtualBox), and ESXi on bare metal on the "virtualization machine"?
Hi.
Is anyone running an ESXi/ZFS all-in-one setup on an HP ProLiant MicroServer N40L? How does it perform? How did you do it? Since the N40L doesn't support passthrough, how would I get my OmniOS/OI VM to access my drives? The obvious solution would be RDM (raw device mapping), but how...
How safe is my data on 3x 3TB hard drives in a RAID-Z1 configuration? I know a RAID-Z2 setup would be safer and/or preferred, but this is simply for home use and I got these drives for free. I don't really want to spend any more money on network storage.
Are 3TB hard drives too large for a...
I'm in the process of building a new home lab.
This is the parts I have (or are on the way) so far:
2x Intel Xeon L5520
Tyan S7012 (S7012GM4NR)
16GB DDR3 ECC
2x Intel 520 120GB SSD
6x 2TB HDD for RAID-Z2
Any input? Anything I should change? How will the motherboard hold up? Will a...
Hi!
I have a quick question maybe someone with a setup like it could answer. How much power does a dual L5520 system use on average? How much power does your system use? What hardware is in the rig? Are they truly a "lower power" CPU?
Best regards,
ultrakomm.
Hi!
I'm looking for a case for a home ESXi server lab project. I'm looking for either a Yoeng Yang YY-0221B (http://www.modthebox.com/review241_1.shtml), or a case similar to it.
Does anyone know of such a case? Preferably sold in Europe as shipping it across the Atlantic would just cost...
Maybe that's a better idea, then. I just bought two L5520's, though, for ~40 USD each, bad deal? I just need a motherboard and I'd have a working setup. The other parts I already have. I basically just need a CPU + motherboard combo.
Will look into the 2582EEU and T110.
A couple of VMs (pfsense, a couple of light Linux VM and maybe 1-2 Windows VMs). 2-3 expansion cards (PCI Express or whatever). Tower. Total budget for CPU, MB, RAM $400-450. Thanks for the hint about the L5520. :)
Hi!
I'm in the planning stages of building a new virtualization and storage server (or maybe a storage and virtualization server). I'm planning on using SmartOS or OmniOS as the operating system/hypervisor for this server. I would like the server to be built from (mostly) used components and be...
Project FiFo seems nice, but I don't have any immediate use for it. I'm perfectly comfortable with the command line. :) I somewhat even prefer it. I might try Project FiFo, though, since it runs in a zone (mainly?) it can't hurt.
Great. :) Thanks for the example zone json. I really like the...
Thanks for the responses!
Could I setup SmartOS so that the "zones" pool is an SSD, and have a zone with a "storage" pool attached to it which handles all things (network) storage? Wouldn't that also solve the issue with having to configure CIFS in the global zone?
I also have two other...
Hi!
I'm wondering if it is possible to use SmartOS as the base for an all-in-one server, similar to napp-it ESXi/OpenIndiana/ZFS all-in-one?
Has anyone tried this? Is it possible? If not, what are the drawbacks? What are the advantages?
Best regards,
ultrakomm
Another solution I came up with is creating the NAS VM, and then moving the VM onto itself. From one datastore to another one shared to ESXi over NFS. But it seems like it could be a very bad idea. Haha. Thoughts?
Not even sure if it would work though.
Hi!
I have a slight problem. I was planning on running my OpenIndiana-based all-in-one from a USB3 SLC-stick (plugged in to USB2), but I have now figured out that ESXi won't let you create datastores on any sort of USB connected device. Maybe this was a stupid idea from the beginning, but...
