I'm with you. Never had a Torx screw strip on me unlike a cross pattern philips screws. The extra points of contact are great for helping prevent that. I did one time snap the head off a tiny little T6 screw on a mid-2007 iMac audio board when I made the mistake of using an electric screwdriver...
Yes, that would be an accurate summary. In exchange for the discounted price, you forgo some time on the warranty. How much time you give up depends on how long it's been since the first time the unit was sold. Otherwise, it is the same as a new unit.
That's a little outside my area of expertise, because I'm the "forums" guy as opposed to the others who you may see posting responses to reviews on sites like Amazon. So I'm assuming that's Amazon's version of an open box unit, in which case the only real difference would be that the warranty...
So I had occasion to risk immolation and ask my group's monitor maven. She will be assisting on my side of things, and she would like to see a photo of the issue if you could provide one. If you could send that to the email address in my sig, that would make it easier for me to then pass it...
I don't typically handle monitors, but I am the sort of jack of all trades of my group, so... Depending on the inventory we have in our RMA dept here, I could personally take over the RMA. Find a display, run whatever tests you want on it, then send it out to you when you're satisfied.
Generally we prefer that people deal with the reseller within the return period, but I should be able to set up an RMA for you if you want to stay with the PB278Q, and Amazon has depleted their remaining stock, assuming you're in the NA region. Otherwise I might be able to find someone to help...
I would say v-sync is an excellent place to start. It's quick and easy to flip on and test, so why not give that a try and then let us know the results?
I would run memtest86+ before sending the board in. You don't typically expect freezes with bad RAM, but then bad RAM can run a pretty wide gamut of symptoms.
Assuming it's not intended to be a gift, maybe take her to a local best buy or some such store to play with a Nexus 7, and ask her whether or not she thinks the screen is good enough for her.
She might even find she likes the smaller screen. I probably have slightly larger than average hands...
IMO, there's no substitute for a "proper" home theater setup in the form of a receiver, sub, and speakers. You can probably find a few decent HTIAB (Home Theater in a Box) setups places like Onkyo's little online outlet store (Club Onkyo IIRC) and I'm sure others will have some suggestions. That...
The ROG laptops use their own unique MXM cards. I once asked about the possibility of adding these to the Asus eStore, but basically the idea was kicked around and rejected a long time ago as just creating far too many problems. You might buy such a card, put it in, and fully understand it's an...
Not sure if Google is still selling the GNex on its Play Store, but that might be a good option. Virtually everything about that phone is fantastic, except the battery life. Not sure what the Nexus 4 is selling for, but I think it's only a little over your budget, if you could manage to get one...
As a general rule, the OOBE (Out of Box Experience) drivers Microsoft provides are not very good. They're good enough to provide some minimal functionality, and get you up and going long enough to install proper drivers, but not much more. So loading the actual drivers is a good idea.
Probably, but it's just one of the things I tended to learn the hard way when I worked as a hardware tech. Always best to rule out every possibility, even if you're pretty sure you know what the issue is.
Plus, if only one port is bad -- and I guess I forgot to suggest trying each device in...
Well, it's not a solution so much as kind of kicking the can down the road, but you should be able to get a USB hub that may allow you to deal with this.
It might also help to try figuring out if one or the other device is causing problems. So maybe just try disconnecting the 360 controller for...
If it's an OEM version of Windows, you're going to run into problems.
If you have a retail version of Windows, IIRC there's a function of the OOBE (Out of Box Experience) program that can basically wipe out all third party drivers that will make Windows BSOD when you try and boot it on a new...
I rather doubt such a deal would ever get the regulator's approval.
However, as AMD said when they bought ATI, there's not a huge difference between producing an x86 CPU and a GPU. Once you have the design pinned down, then the actual manufacturing process would be pretty similar. So that is...
I don't have anything for that specific release, but I checked through my old emails and found one for 10.4.4.16 and by and large that was just to update to Jellybean. So the .23 release was probably just some minor bugfix release, or possibly something like going from Android 4.1.1 to 4.1.2.
The Galaxy S3 has surprisingly good battery life considering it has a slightly larger screen and faster CPU over the GNex.The only issue I find, is that (presently) using a custom TouchWiz based ROM, is that seemingly out of nowhere apps seem to get stuck in a kind of zombie state and ramp the...
I think this is what you would call planned obsolescence. I suppose the truly determined might be able to figure out a way to pry the things open and replace the battery, but most people will just get a new phone figuring they have no other choice.
Thanks. Haven't gotten it yet, but that's likely just because it can take a bit for our email systems to sync up. Nice to be able to pass along a positive report instead of just negative.
I don't work in the call center, but as you might imagine, there's a bit of overlap in our functions. So, I occasionally cross paths with the people who do oversee the call center, and as I said, they like getting actual customer responses so they know where to focus attentions. It's also nice...
It'd be great if you could send me your case or RMA #. I like to make sure that people who do a good job are commended for it as much as people who are not doing a good job are chastised.
If you have a case number, or even your RMA #, I can pass it along with your comments to the people who oversee the call center. You can send it via an email or PM if you prefer. They like getting actual customer comments so they know where they need to focus more attention.
As for your RMA...

The Metro/Modern UI is definitely easier to deal with as a touch interface, given it's taken from the Windows Phone platform aimed at touch screen devices. However, there's still a "classic" Windows desktop UI in there as well. So, the idea behind the Taichi is probably along the lines of using...
It doesn't fold over so much as when you close the clamshell it flips from laptop mode to tablet mode. Unless you use the taichi key to specifically set one display as active, or both.
Someone just walked around to my desk, and I've got a demo Taichi unit sitting right next to me. So they do exist. I won't be able to keep it long term, so afraid I won't be able to answer any detailed questions about it.
If it is a Vsync thing, then the LCD panel would come into play as well. Different devices, using different panels, might have more or less pronounced manifestations of this issue. There might also be specific apps which are eschewing the Android API in favor of some kind of home grown solution...
If my hypothesis is correct, then the only fix would be at the app level. Basically apps are using a depreciated API, and need to be updated to use the new API. Think of it like how if you have some app written for Android 2.x, it still looks like an Android 2.x app even on Android 4.x. To...
Sorry, seems I missed this one. I don't normally do monitors, so I tend to only skim posts quickly. Anyway... Afraid there's not much I can do about the shipping, but if you can send me a couple photos of this issue and the one you describe a few posts up, I can certainly look into your options...
Meant to respond to this as well. Tablets aren't what I typically do, but if you can get me a quick video of the problem, I can run it past some people and see if they have any suggestions or want to just set up an RMA.
The one thing that comes to mind for me, is if you go to Settings, then...
Sounds a lot like a vsync thing. Given with 4.1 Google went to make the entire UI run at 60fps, the so-called Project Butter, it seems plausible that some older apps might cause problems when running at some lower refresh rate.
It sounds like a bad cable and/or set of front jacks to me. The part about wiggling things or rotating the plug in the jack is pretty condemning evidence for it being an issue with the jack or possibly the cable. The fact that the microphone stopped working earlier is one more finger pointing at...
Depending on whether or not the unit is under warranty, I have a couple of suggestions.
If it's OOW, then the first thing I'd try is just simply reseating the keyboard cable. If that doesn't work, and you're in the US or Canada, you can try a replacement keyboard from the Asus eStore...
Jelly Bean and ICS look more or less identical save a few minor differences. Jellybean was more of a performance tuning release.
You can also find replacement connectors at the Asus estore if you need them: http://us.estore.asus.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=3635
As I recall from when I did Apple repair work, those power bricks run a bit warm normally, which always made me a little leery of them. They also seemed to fail quite a bit.
Still, considering you have evidence of there being a significant electrical short in there already, I'd say yes it is a...
