Best Solution for Improving Wi-Fi Signal Strength Inside Hotel Room?

    Apple Event Essentials

Despite the apple paradigm and hate, Apple has a real knack for taking useful features on that are already present in a lot of other phones, perhaps not widely known or even utilized, wrapping it in iOS, and making the user experience such that those various gain vocal popularity. That being...

Nope, no client specific bandwidth limiting. The router is compatible with ddwrt firmware (installed fine on mine), but i don't recall if ddwrt has that either (would think it did, but can't confirm).

What Happens When Your Friends Start Leaving Facebook?

I think that a lot of people who say they use FB to 'keep in touch' with old high school friends, or old acquaintances, really mean, "it's a nice, passive way for me to see what they post." Because let's face it, you more than likely aren't having meaningful interactions with most folks you're...

Microsoft Introduces Surface Pro 3 Docking Station

I picked up the SP3 i5 on pre-order, and bought one of the well-reviewed USB 3.0 'docking stations' (really, should be called a port replicator). The annoying thing with all of these video-over-usb solutions is that it takes, sometimes, a significant amount of CPU to compress/decompress the...

AT&T Exclusivity Hindering Amazon Phone Sales

The specs don't matter. It's a relatively expensive, niche-oriented device on a single carrier. How well could you honestly expect it to do? Honestly, if Amazon expected people to flock to this device, they really didn't do their market research.

Smartphone Kill-Switch Bill Passes California Assembly

This is a good idea, tin-foil-hat-wearers can suck it. Read the description of the bill. The killswitch is a authorized user, user-end feature that only the authorized user can decide to use, or otherwise opt-out of. This isn't some government conspiracy to control your device or shut it...

900 Authors Protest Amazon With NYT Ad

Thanks for writing all of this--I found it very interesting and a good explanation. One thing I'm still unclear of, perhaps you mentioned it and I missed it, is that some of the recent negotiation rumors are that Amazon has been asking for a take of 50% of purchase price books if Hachette is...

Elon Musk Reveals Details On Upcoming $35,000 Tesla

I might agree with you until it's considered that the Smartcar--neither luxurious nor performance--also tops out at $20k before taxes, fees, etc. The market segment is broken (in the US anyway). Everywhere else, you pay less for less car. I'm just saying that it's discouraging to get people...

Elon Musk Reveals Details On Upcoming $35,000 Tesla

The one thing that gets to me about the small Fiats, Smartcars, etc., is the relatively phenomenal amount of money for such a small amount of car. And $15k for a USED one! And base $19.5 for a new one! That's as much as I paid for my boring Camry new. Don't get me wrong--I'm not trying to...

Windows 8.1 first tile is always highlighted

I just noticed--I don't see the first tile highlighted (also mail in my case), but if I'm in tiles just after logging in to my computer, if I hit enter, it opens mail. So the tile is selected. Just not showing as selected/highlighted under 'normal' circumstances, perhaps? If I'm in tiles, and...

Windows 8.1 first tile is always highlighted

I have not. Guessing you've tried a restart? I had some weird bug recently where the start button wasn't working (start button was showing on the screen, but clicking on it did nothing). It seemed to have gone away after the most recent updates.

What is the performance hit when encrypting a modern smartphone (Note 3)?

I've had to encrypt my previous 2 phones for accessing work stuff (LG Optimus G and LG G2). I noticed zero performance difference (and zero battery life difference) between the unencrypted and encrypted states. Unless it's a very low end phone, I couldn't imagine encrypting would have a...

Elon Musk Reveals Details On Upcoming $35,000 Tesla

I think I didn't quite follow the whole diesel vs. gasoline argument going on; it's true, diesel engine cars (in the USA) have a higher price retail price than gasoline equivalents. But it seemed like someone was saying that diesel engines in the USA (for sedans) are only getting something like...

Why Windows Needs A Start Menu

Navigating with a mouse is far slower than hitting the windows key on your keyboard, and typing just a few letters of the application you want to launch, then hitting enter to launch it. You never even need to remove your hands from the keyboard to the mouse. Navigating the start...

Why Windows Needs A Start Menu

Windows doesn't need a start menu. Microsoft screwed the pooch with the introduction of windows 8, and not even including something as necessary as a simple tutorial. That's why even through 8.1, which addresses virtually all of the initial gripes of 8, reception still suffers. I like 8.1...

    LG3 photos rumor

I'm curious how the overall camera feel on the G3 compares to the xda camera mod for the G2 (and other LG phones). The camera mod brings virtually all the new capture functions to the G2 that showed up in the G3 (of course, no laser focus, lol). The laser-focus is hard to grasp by just reviews...

Elon Musk Reveals Details On Upcoming $35,000 Tesla

So minimum $40k out the door... I have a hard time swallowing spending much more than 20k on a car. The value-return drops exponentially after that as far as I'm concerned. I have the world's most boring car--a 2010 toyota camry--but I have a very hard time legitimately excusing spending much...

Senate Committee Approves Mobile Phone Unlocking Bill

I saw this a few days ago, and I'm still confused by the actual implementation and wording. Specifically by this: So...that makes it seem like this bill is a bunch of nothing. A carrier is not obligated to unlock a device? Or is a carrier not obligated to carry unlocked devices for sale...

Not getting 6.0 on new build

The proper transfer rate will depend on the drive's spec's, not the bus it's connected to, provided that the bus is as fast or faster than the theoretical max throughput of the drive. But connecting a drive to a faster bus won't magically give you a faster drive. And slightly off-topic, man...

    Charge Your Electronics Before Boarding

Kust after sept 11th, I recall it was standard to ask people through checkpoints to turn on their computers in front of TSA agents. I think it became too cumbersome with how many more people were carrying laptops, tablets, etc. to ask everyone to power on all devices. I find it hard to...

Going backwards? 1156 or 1366 (or neither)?

Clock-for-clock, haswell will be faster. And likely able to clock higher as well. The difference will come down to how much the haswell system will cost you. If it's basically a net zero impact after you sell your current stuff, I see zero reason to stick with the older and less power...

Going backwards? 1156 or 1366 (or neither)?

Agreed with above. The improved power efficiencies plus advances in performance per clock and the introduction of new instruction sets (and other features like sata 3 and usb 3.0) makes even the highest end Bloomfield a bad choice.

California Governor Signs Bill Legalizing Bitcoin

It's funny, people talking about the taxation of bitcoin. Bitcoin is already classified as a taxable property (rather than a currency) by the IRS. You don't need to legalize or classify something as a currency in order to impose tax on it--it just has to have value. Legitimizing bitcoin is...
