RPC 4224 seems to be at a very good price right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219038&cm_re=rpc_4224-_-11-219-038-_-Product. I believe I've read that they are now coming standard with newer backplanes and a 120mm fan bracket. I bought one about 3 years ago and...
Might be worth clarifying what transcoding is and when it is going to happen. I'll speak to Plex because that is what I'm most familiar with, but other media serving software usually exhibit similar behavior.
Your client device (iPhone, iPad, smart TV, etc) will have a list of compatible...
You can also check Chenbro for additional SAS expanders. I would have chosen the Chenbro CK23601 if I hadn't gotten an HP expander for a great price.
Edit: They also have a kit for a JBOD that includes a power switch board and can be mounted kinda like a motherboard. Part number UEK23601.
Yeah I don't know either, but if it's able to be read, I'd assume it's correct. It also gets the correct number for my Seagates @ 5900rpm. My WDs don't show any rotational speed.
If I'm not mistaken Dell Percs can be flashed to a non-RAID mode (IT or IR) just like any other LSI SAS2008 based cards. You can read more about flashing in the thread I linked. Rebranded cards are usually found to be much cheaper than their LSI counterparts.
The Coolspins are 5700rpm, so they're not 5400rpm either.
It's possible they are not producing them anymore, I've seen the Jan 2013 manufacturing time frame before but nothing more recent. However, I see the prices of them continuing to drop and that leads me to believe they still are. These...
I think the Norco 4224 (or XCase I think the other version is called) or SuperMicro SC846 are in order for that many HDDs. If you can pick up a used SuperMicro it would be close to the cost of the Norco and probably a slightly better unit, but there's really nothing wrong with the Norco either...
I have an SSD in the same location as above, just buy a bracket and drill a couple holes. It would be nice if the case came from the factory with mounting holes/hardware, but oh well. There are lots of places to mount extra 2.5" drive(s), or even 3.5" drive(s).
I've heard mostly good things about the Hitachis, so I recently bought 6. Didn't have any bad sectors on the 6 after a full format, so I put them into production. I haven't used them very long so my only personal experience so far is that they run hotter than a number of the other WD and...
Just in case anyone comes googling here for a solution, I'll post my findings.
After a lengthy diagnosis, I discovered the source of the problem was a bad power connector on the cable that fed my backplanes. I had known this cable was suspect previously, I should have checked it sooner in the...
Looks like you can only do 180W per 12V rail. Your Green HDDs are supposed to draw around 6 watts under load, so 6 X 16 = 96 watts total under load, so you should be fine to have them all hooked up on one rail, but if you have other components drawing on that line as well maybe there is an...
No luck there. Any other ideas on why the sudden change in behavior? Server appears to run fine in RAID controller mode, picks up my SSD in one of the onboard SATA ports, but does not pick up the other 4 drives in onboard SATA ports nor any drives through the M1015.
Depends on how many amps each rail is rated for. Amps X Volts = Watts.
750W should be enough for 24 drives, but maybe not if you don't use staggered spin up and 7200 rpm or faster drives. I use a 650W for 12 drives, but I've never seen it pull above 300W. I plan to use it for 24 low rpm drives.

I ordered the magnetic one as well. In a Norco 4224 I'm thinking it can either attach to the ventilation grille above the PCI-E slot area as you mentioned, or I could attach it to the side of the case in that area and still have enough reach to cover both cards I believe. Once it arrives I'll...
Look what I found: http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g40/c18/s62/list/p1/Air_Cooling-HDD_RAM_System_HeatsinksCoolers-PCI_Slot_Fans-Page1.html
:)
I'm leaning towards this one, or maybe this one.
I don't know for sure, but yes I've heard SSD lifespan is not as much of a concern any more - but why test that if you don't need to? Page files are completely unnecessary if you have enough memory.
Just get rid of the page file on your SSD, it causes a lot of unnecessary read/writes, reducing the lifespan of your SSD, and can take up quite a bit of space as you've noticed. Unless you are RAM deprived it is really not necessary to use. I run my Win 7 desktop with 8GB of RAM and no page...
+1 on ordering them from Monoprice, unless you're looking for a certain length, or right angle connectors etc. because unfortunately Monoprice doesn't have those options.
Try a Supermicro 4U case if you need that many drive slots, you can find a used one for under $500. IMO they are a better quality case than the Norco's, but I only have a Norco not a Supermicro.
Very nice Neme, I was hoping for something like that, but was also hoping I wouldn't have to custom make it. I also saw one guy had some custom water cooled adapter he used instead of the passive heat sink on the M1015, very nice but not exactly what I was hoping to find available.
Ah, thought you were still inquiring about them. :)
So I take it you haven't decided on a controller or RAID card yet, I'd suggest an LSI or LSI-rebranded controller (such as the IBM M1015) + the Intel, Chenbro or HP SAS Expanders. IIRC Backblaze uses a SATA>SATA port multiplier on their...
FlexRAID also offers real time software RAID with this functionality. It doesn't matter which method of RAID you choose, there are options to do either with different sized disks.
I don't know if there is official support but a friend of mine told me that he is able to stream .ISO with limited functionality (no FF, RW and maybe some issue with the audio, I can't remember). That was with the latest version of PMS for Windows and Plex App for Samsung TVs.
Just a word of warning from my experience with LEDs, beware of flashlighting. I have a Samsung UN40ES6100 and while I am happy enough with the TV, the flashlighting is a problem. It is less of a problem on true edge-lit LEDs, and perhaps it's not an issue with newer/larger TVs.
For a media server I wouldn't go with anything but low rpm drives. They run cool and quiet, and are plenty capable of streaming multiple HD videos at once. I've used both Seagate and WD, both 7k rpm and 5k rpm models, and have had some failures of each. HDD failure is going to happen, so if...
With many of the software RAID options you can combine drives of different sizes in the array and use all available space, with the caveat that your parity drive(s) has to be equal to or greater in size than your largest non-parity disk.
