I have 2 of these with 72GB of RAM each for several months now. While I'm not running ESXi anymore, they are running Hyper-V 3.0 and I've had no issues with them so far.
Currently I'm running 11 VM's between the 2. (one of them is Plex server)
I also am running two C1100's and have had no issues with them. One of them did originally have to be RMA'd as it would not install Server 2012 on it and we were not able to update the BIOS.
These both have been running for smooth for 3-4 months now.
I had issues connecting and managing Server HyperV 2012 as well.
Testing out Server 2012 with the HyperV role added instead.
Looking at possibly replacing ESXi 5 with HyperV when I build my new server.
I've been trying out HyperV 2012 on VMWare Workstation for about a week or so now.
I have 2 up and running to test live migration, etc due to pricing vs. ESXi.
It seems a lot more complicated to set up or am I just making it difficult? They both have to be in a Domain to use live...
I'm trying to connect Win Server 2012 to the Hyper-V Server 2012 so I can manage it, but I'm getting an error that it cannot find it (workgroup).
Is there a command I need to run on the Hyper-V server that will allow rsat to connect to it?
I live here too and plan on placing my new server in the garage on a ceiling rack.
Was concerned that my garage was fairly warm a couple days last week due to the warm weather we are having.
I have not yet pulled the trigger yet on a new server.
I've done some more thinking and will likely not go with an all-in-one setup like I currently have. As such by build will be a bit different from what I have listed on the front page.
I'll post the setup once I have everything planned out.
These are some great ideas for labs to run.
Can't wait to build my new server so I have something more powerful (and lots more RAM).
I'm thinking of setting up some virtual AD servers to play with and some software that requires AD.
Maybe if the prices came down on that, it would be a great bet for myself too. The CPU/MB will cost you almost 1k alone.
Looks like all LGA2011 boards are dual socket as well. Would be easy to upgrade the CPU in the future, though 6 cores/12 threads is quite a bit. The temptation of having more...
I saw the e-sata ports, maybe they will come in handy down the road.
What do you mean by modding the x4 slot? Can't say I've ever modded a pci-e slot.
Thanks for confirming the onboard video, looks like this is the board I will likely go with.
The reason I had, as you pointed out are now invalid. Originally I wanted a board with a lot of SATA ports, but with the RAID card I have now decided on, it is now not necessary.
Originally I also thought the board didn't support the i7 integrated graphics and I didn't want to get a separate...
Thanks for all the information. I'm likely not buying it for a couple of months, so if it's not available by then I will get it somewhere else. Will post pics as well.
Yeah, I'm not sure yet how I'm going to tackle that yet as I really don't want to buy 2 RAID cards. Wouldn't be too hard to back up the NAS VM once it's configured and throw it on a new datastore in case it fails.
Thanks for the info in this, I will pass on this MB.
This board is looking...
That I'm not sure about. However I decided to switch the build to an LSI card.
Thanks for the tip. I have read through that thread a few times before. Great information!
Ok, some updated items for my build.
i7-2600
ASRock Z68 EXTREME4 GEN3
2x G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB
LSI SATA/SAS 9211-8i
This will give me the 32GB of RAM I'm looking for.
The RAID card here should be a lot more compatible and is more powerful then the previous one I had listed as...
Ah dang it. I switched my choices in MB once already due to that. I thought this one can take just ECC RAM. Doesn't seem any of the LGA1155 Server MB's take anything but unbuffered. Looks like I will have to use a regular desktop MB as I really want 32GB of RAM. :( Really too bad as I did want...
Thanks, I checked the reviews on the HW Raid and folks are using them with ESXi 5.
They do on my current ESXi build. Never thought about on-board Sata ports not working.
I know a lot of folks recommend having shared storage, but that would require another PC. I'm not so sure I want...
Been reading here for some time on trying to figure out how I would put together a new ESXi build and think I finally found a solution that will work. Would like to hear people's thoughts on this build.
