OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I realize it's a bit early since this OI release was just announced, but it would be interesting to hear your thoughts about whether a new all-in-one build should go with OmniOS or OI in light the latest developments in OmniOS.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Thanks to both _Gea and you -- I have a lot of info to get started on. The Supermicro X10SDV-7TP4F is pretty interesting beast, including the Xeon CPU, 10gb ethernet, and 16-port LSI 2116. I hadn't stumbled onto this in my previous research. Looks like it even has a graphics controller unlike...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Thanks for your reply, gigatexal. If this is inappropriate for this thread, feel free to have a mod delete it. I posted it here due to a) using SFX, Omnios, and Napp-it, and b) the wealth of experience of fellow all-in-one devotees.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Hi, At work we have two ZFS all-in-one setups, one for production, one for disaster recovery at a remote site. The production one is on a Dell R720xd with two Xeon E5-2620 cpus, 96gb ECC memory, and 8 nearline SAS 2Tb disks running under ESXi 5.1. There is an OpenIndiana vm with the disks passed...

The Slow Death Of The Manual Transmission

In my long driving life I have never owned an automatic transmission. But I rarely ever have to drive in stop and go traffic. My current car is a 2015 VW Jetta GLI 6-speed manual. Loads of fun to drive. When I rent a car its painful to drive in the US with an auto trans. Of course you're usually...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I have been updating our [virtual] linux servers (mix of Centos 6.5, Oracle Linux 5.11, Oracle Linux 6.5) to remediate the Shellshock bash bug. We have two VMWare Esxi 5.1 hosts, each with an OpenIndiana VM used as a ZFS SAN for an all-in-one. As far as I can tell there is no bash update for OI...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Hmmm. As a counterpoint to your rant, I have been using OI and napp-it in two separate production deployments for nearly two years without any problem with either OI or napp-it. Knock on wood, please. \ I think you will likely find many others with my experience. If you want some real help...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

You poor man's locate would sort of work, but the real locate has a database which produces the results very fast; and the updatedb command has many options to include/exclude directories from the search.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I discovered after updating my OI 151a7 system to oi_151a8 today that the locate command is gone. A bit of googling shows that it was part of the now obsolete "slocate" package. The replacement package "mlocate" has not been released for Solaris and variants. Apparently the source will not...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I suggest reading this excellent article about slow performance with vmxnet3 under solaris variants. I followed the suggestions in the blog and improved my AIO network performance substantially. Here is the link : Improving VM to VM network throughput on an ESXi platform. Note that I am running...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Hi _Gea, For those of us who currently run Openindiana, do you have any suggestions for the least painful way of converting to OmniOS? Obviously our ZFS pools will still be there, but all of our configuration that is part of the kernel rpool will not. Thank you.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

As long as you have SSH setup on your OmniOS host, you could use sftp. Of course if the clients are on WIndows boxes they would need to have an ssh client (with sftp). I'm sure there are plenty, but we use cygwin.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Even though you did say the pools are shared externally via SMB, you didn't say a) what was the OS of the VMs you were moving, nor b) how the datastores for those VMs were set up (NFS, iSCSI, etc). I can tell you this: the vmdk on system A does not have ACLs enabled (no '+' in the mode) while...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

hominindae -- I think you are confused about PCI pass-through. Yes we need that on a typical all-in-one where we run a Solaris variant as a virtual host under ESXi to give the Solaris OS most efficient access to the disk hardware for SAN/ZFS use. However because SmartOS is intended to run on...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I'm afraid you have incorrect information -- SmartOS only has vt-d limitations when run as a *nested* virtual host under VMWare or Hyper-V. When run on the bare metal, no limitations. Please go and read the documentation more carefully before you jump to conclusions. Perhaps you are confusing...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

We have been a very satisfied user of multiple all-in-ones based on Gea's model (and using napp-it, of course). We outgrew the limitations of the free version of Vsphere, needing to use more memory. So we upgraded to VMWare Essentials Kit, which removes the memory limitation and allows up to 3...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I would start by installing wireshark on both the Solaris VM and your mac[s] and then examine packet captures between the two, looking for obvious errors. I have solved some pretty daunting network problems this way. You might also compare the packets from one of the working macs to the ones on...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Sorry, I haven't been checking back on this and missed your question when you first posted it ... the Perc H310 uses a proprietary split cable that branches a single connector at the controller end into two right-angled SFF-8087 cables that attach to the SAS backplane. We replaced that cable...

We did purchase another LSI 9211-8i and had a dog of a time cabling it to the Dell r720xd SAS backplane. Unfortunately after getting OI powered on with the backplane cabled in, we found the same problem -- the disks were recognized but could not be accessed. The errors in /var/adm/messages were...

Could you please give me more info about "Dell host 6G HBA firmware"? Link would be great. We ordered a 2nd LSI 9211 and some SFF-8087 right-angle cables to connect to the Dell r720xd SAS backplane. (Of course we first disconnected the Dell custom one-into-two SAS cable that was connected to...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I am afraid I was a bit premature about everything working. Although napp-it could see the 8 2TB disks, when I tried to create a pool, it failed. The disks were not accessible. At this point we decided to order another LSI 9211 and disconnect the Dell Perc H310 from the SAS backplane. Hope I...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

We are up and running. Napp-it sees the 8 2TB drives on the SAS backplane. If anyone else is trying this, here are the steps taken: 1. Install and configure OpenIndiana as a VM under ESXi. 2. Download the following Solaris/OI driver...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

ESXi seems to have no problem with the Dell Perc H310. -- it is OpenIndiana that has the problem. The issue with #2 is that the embedded Dell Perc controller seems to use a custom SAS connector at the controller end that looks like two SFF-8087s joined together. I haven't removed it yet and will...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

We just got a new Dell r720xd server that came with a built-in Dell Perc h310 raid controller [based on LSI SAS 2008 controller] (looks like a daughter card on the motherboard as opposed to a PCIe add-on card). We also purchased an LSI 9211-8i (which we have used with great success on an older...

Gea, We do have the datastore for the OI VM mirrored. We do not over-commit memory. And we do not need VMotion (at least for the virtual SAN). So how would one backup a boot environment? That's all we probably need. I think what you are saying is that you can copy the BE to offline storage and...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Question for all you other all-in-one devotees: what is the best way to back up the OpenIndiana VM that hosts your ZFS SAN when you have used PCI hardware passthrough of the HBA? Using VMDirectPath I/O has the trade off of getting better performance by eliminating the virtual I/O overhead at the...
