OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Probably it has been asked before, but anyways. Question: Is it possible to change the block size of a LU through Napp-it, or is it possible to choose a block size creating a LU? I'm not seeing the option, but maybe I'm looking over it? Standard the LU is created with 512kb, let's assume I'd...

    Cleanup on SSD Boot Disk

When I install my computers with Windows 7 OS on an SSD, and I have the luxury to have a normal hdd as second drive for data I use sysprep to automatically move the c:\Users and c:\programdata to this data drive. Much like what is explained here (top answer)...

    Best Practices SSD

Maybe we could start a thread collecting all the best practices using SSD's in all variants of operating systems? I was looking for information regarding best practices using SSD's for the rpool (root pool or whatever you want to call it). There is a lot of loose information here and there...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Well ... Indeed need to rethink the system ... I'll need to find some sata drives on the cheap somewhere, will be a challenge. I used the Raid 1 because I was too lazy to change it :D If I configure it as a RAID 0 it should work no? Then make ZFS out of it. Or ... Just use some Sata...

    SuperMicro X7SPA-HF-D525 8GB RAM FYI

I will test this as well, just building one like this for using as pfsense as well ... Or maybe something similar, haven't made up my mind yet. Anyway, I have some memory laying around, maybe it works with this as well ... Thanks for the tip.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I just installed Nexentastor on my test system. The latest build. It was the only one that installed on the hardware raid 1 (a basic mirror, not 10, like I first wrote, too much going on in my head) that I had in spare and wanted to use for this test system. The volumes for storage are on...

    Syslogging and IP conflict

Normally you can change the ESXi management network without rebooting or guest downtime. Either through the ESXi console or through command line. http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1006710 It will restart the management services when...

HP Server $250 Good Untangle/PFSense box?

These little servers are capable of so much more ... People use them to make storage systems out of them (NAS/SAN) ... Seems a bit of a waste to use them as a pfsense box. The price is right, but waste of a good mini server in my opinion. Maybe more suitable if you combine it with something like...

    8GB DDR3 Unbuffered ECC UDIMMs

I was looking for some 8GB sticks as well, registered of course, so I can run 32GB in total. I ordered them earlier this week. I also ordered some 4GB sticks as well, those came in fast. The 8GB sticks ... Still waiting. This for a Supermicro X8 board as well.

But don't use the 2500K if you plan on using VT-d features in VMware, as that is not supported with this CPU.

Best way to virtualize a file server on ESXi 4.1?

Openfiler is a great platform for storage, of course it can be used as a file server, no problem. In the end it will be what you're most comfortable with. If you want to get some experience in the storage operating system world, Openfiler will not dissapoint. I'd say go for it, see what it...

Best way to virtualize a file server on ESXi 4.1?

Hi, first post here ... If you're working with ESXi you can import virtual appliances which you can find on the VMware site. Most are free, you can search for file server for example, you'll get something in return like this appliance: http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/393293 It's...
