NVidia releases GTX 680, 2 months after 7970 released

From launch drivers to Catalyst 12.10, I've never had a crashing issue with my overclock 1125/1575 @ 1.125V. I've started to experience consistent crashes in the Witcher 2 with these 12.11 Beta 8 drivers. So far, it seems stable at 1100/1550 @ 1.125V, but I'll have to do some more testing.
Thanks so much for the response! I've purchased the ASUS Xonar DSX, which comes with 4 line-out outputs: front, rear, center, sub. It looks like I'll need to buy 4 of those 3.5mm to RCA cables, using only one RCA connection for the center and one for the sub, and connect to the external decoder...
It looks like I'd have to go with a ASUS Xonar DSX, or the Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D THX PCIE Sound Card SB1350. Both these cards are in the $50 range. I'm leaning more towards the Recon3D, than the DSX.
I picked up an old receiver, the Yamaha RX-V795a, which does not have any HDMI inputs. I've read that digital connections are preferred over analog ones for audio, so I'm looking to connect to it via an SPDIF optical cable. I currently don't have a sound card, so I'm shopping around for one. My...
This thread isn't about your happiness with a new product. The moment you titled the post "AMD v. Nvidia," people come into the thread with guns ready. What else do you expect with a title like that? Then we get to your original post. You claim that Company X has better _____ than Company Y...
I rarely game with headphones on, so it sounds like I should skip the sound card and invest that money towards the speaker/amp/subs. I'll continue doing research this weekend. All the suggestions are super helpful, thanks everyone!
Great, thanks for the advice. I can live with my onboard audio, I just figured having a sound card could improve the experience when I finally do get home theater speakers.
I've been following the other recent threads on [H] about speaker. They focus primarily on the speakers, and not...
Hi, I'm looking to finally upgrade the sound on my PC from onboard audio. I currently have an old Logitec x530 5.1 speaker system. However, I plan to eventually get some quality speakers that one would find in a home theater system. I'd like a sound card that supports both the a 5.1 computer...
Since you mention Skyrim, I can share my experience with that game using a 7970.
My relevant specs
- i7 920 @ 3.6GHz
- Single reference 7970 @ 1125/1575. 12.8 WHQL drivers, 12.7 CAP3 profiles
- 2560x1600 resolution. Things should be much smoother at your resolution.

I run Skyrim at 2560x1600 with my 7970 OC @ 1125/1575, with 8x AA and 16x AF. The only setting not maxed is shadows, which I've read is more of a CPU limiting factor than GPU. And when I say maxed shadows, I mean ini tweaks, not just setting shadows to ultra. As for mods, I use the Bethesda HD...
I am thoroughly impressed with the GTX680. I thought the performance would not be as great beyond 1080p due to the 2GB and 256bit bus. Also, Kyle gave a vague comment in another thread that in 7970 vs 680, 1080p goes to the 680 but beyond that is a different story. Story doesn't look TOO...
I don't think this thread would have reached 11 pages if it weren't for posts like these. 7/10 trolling if that was your intent.
These prices are here to stay. I wouldn't recommend anyone to upgrade from HD6xxx or GTX5xx, but there's plenty of people out there with older gen tech that could...
The reason he uses the word "entitled" is because we're talking about an enthusiast GPU, not food, clothing, or shelter. You're demanding lower prices on a product that doesn't affect your ability to live. It's a luxury product for god's sake. It's not AMD/Nvidia's duty to make sure GPUs are...
Sounds like you're bestowing your two years of wisdom onto the rest of us. Please, enlighten us further with your analysis of GPU prices from your extensive experience. I'm sure we can learn much someone who's read so much online.
Seriously though, you basically entered the GPU scene around a...
At no point did the OP say "AMD is now the driver king, and all is well on the software side of the company." He merely thanked AMD for FINALLY getting it right on a triple A title in a timely manner. Also, why are you always in this sub-forum if you hate AMD so much?
If GK104 really is going to be the GTX 680, then I'm leaning towards GK110 being the high end 7xx series. Like GoldenTiger said, Nvidia meant for GK104 to be mid-range and GK110 to be enthusiast. Problem is they went way too ambitious and their design ended up with too many problems. After...
People really were spoiled by the pricing of the 58xx and 69xx series. Add the fact that some 6950 models could unlock to a 6970, then you get some people with really skewed views of reality. Did you really think the old pricing scheme was a sustainable business model? The pricing on the 78xx...
Hotkeys never worked for me. I always had to right click the pinned CCC icon on my taskbar, then select my profiles from there. Not as efficient as a hotkey, but 2 mouse clicks to change profiles isn't bad either.
I think if you're getting a single GPU, then 7970 is definitely the way to go. It seems like AMD driver problems only occur with Crossfire, so it's more of a valid argument between 7970 CFX and 580 SLI due to driver support. If it's a question of single GPU, then the 7970 wins in all aspects...
Mine is 370 in hex, so 880/1023 = 86%. With no voltage unlock, Afterburner reads a GPU voltage of 0.949V. With vdroop, does this mean my card has a stock voltage of 1.05V?
I didn't have time to overclock the memory, but I was only able to get 1200/1575 at 1.175V. When I went to 1225MHz, my...
Awesome post by the OP. I was wondering why I could only OC up to 1060MHz on stock voltage, and I didn't realize that some cards have different stock voltages. After checking in Afterburner, my card is indeed one of those with stock voltage 1.05V. I'm excited to see how much I can OC to now with...
Ya, could be a CPU issue. I also have an i7 920, and I got a score of ~P7800 with GPU at 1075/1575. Them people with Sandy Bridge seem to be posting much higher numbers.
I was looking for this problem last night and only saw one occurrence of it. When I had a 5XXX card, it was much more frequent and very bothersome. So far it's looking good (not perfect) with the 7970.

Skyrim crashed to desktop at 1.1GHz. It made me a little sad that I couldn't max the slider on CCC. I'll probably do some voltage tweaking over the weekend to see how much more I can push this thing.
Also, am I supposed to have high idle temperatures...
I've asked this question myself on several forums. It seems the thinnest you can get out of the box is the Samsung MD230X3. I've seen these monitors in person, and I'm not a fan of the image quality. Otherwise, you're looking at about an inch of bezel on each side for a nicer monitor like the...
I know exactly what you are talking about. I also have an HP ZR30W with the same issues. The problem here is the DP to miniDP converter. You're probably using the adapter included with your 6970 card. This converter degrades the signal quality leading to the flickering.
Using a DVI-D cable...
