ah damn it all.
So I had my .wim file created, installed the image to a vhd, told windows to boot from the vhd.... and...
The systems have Win7 Pro. booting from a vhd is only supported in ultimate or enterprise.
So with budget constraints in mind, what do I try next? I feel like the effort...
Hey everybody, I came across a question i can't find an answer to.
Using windows 7, is it possible (including 3rd party) to use dual sounds cards with separate audio streams?
For example:
Card 1 = Default sound
Card 2 = Program x (for my uses would be pandora or itunes)
I found...
Oh, and as an actual update - I feel like I'm getting close to something workable.
I have a test system setup, and used imagex to create the .wim image.
so my next step is to try to mount the wim in a vhd, then change the boot.ini to boot from the vhd first.
if that works and I can figure out...
We already have two ubuntu systems in the mix, but apart from one particular user, nobody else will choose that box over windows. Many people also use word, excel, and itunes or they want to install some of their own software. That's really one of our largest advantages over the local kinkos...
The point is people use it and pay for it, so it should be maintained. I personally would never have use for it either, but many people do. An average afternoon will see around 15 users logged in at any given time, sometimes more sometimes fewer.
Holy cow that's expensive. at $180 per 5 systems per year, deep freeze is really not an option. at all.
This project pretty much has a budget of what I can find here in the store and possibly a server license if my boss is in a good mood.
Deep freeze seems to have the same issues as steadystate that I wanted to get away from, particularly that to make any changes or updates, each individual system must 'thaw', be changed, then re-frozen.
For a few systems it wouldn't be too bad, but I'm trying to manage 30-40 machines and...
Hello everybody. So here at work we have an internet cafe where service is available by the hour. Right now all the systems are running windows xp, and so to maintain them we have been using the Windows SteadyState program, so that the computers can remain fully unlocked and usable for customers...
Hi all, I hope this is the right section to find an answer. Anyways, I have a chance to buy PreSonus AudioBox Studio (amazon link) used, without the headphones, for $100.
To me this looks like a good deal based on the price alone, but I've never heard of the company or it's products. I'm hoping...
And I always thought it was impossible to fall in love over the internet ;)
I'm amazed. I've always dreamed of building a system with the best possible configuration and by Jove, there it is sitting in this thread.
I ran an x2 4600+ with a geforce 8500gt on win7 and never had any problems with bluray. If gpu decoding is working properly then the cpu is barely touched at all.
Well I got things started last night and had to make some adjustments.
Because the smaller and quieter case I have is micro atx and my 775 board is micro (the AM2 is atx), the q6600 with quiet aftermarket hsf will be used for the htpc.
My AM2 board also has more sata ports, so it will work...
That's what I'll put together then, thanks!
Assuming I'm starting from zero regarding software and can do whatever I need to have a compatible system, what would you recommend for software? I have a fairly decent variety of movies, tv series, and anime as ripped files and a bluray drive.
I...
I'm going to hijack my own thread a little then.
I'm now considering going all fancy and setting up a windows home server to store/rip the media and having a quieter and cooler htpc front connected over gigabit.
potential server:
q6600, 4gb ddr3, 8500gt, 4-6tb storage
potential htpc:
athlon x2...
I do use dxva codecs. I really like that there are some good passive coolers available stock from asus and galaxy. I didn't notice the lower power usage, but that's a great plus too(29w vs 40w).
I really only want the q6600 to kick in while encoding dvd rips. While playing video I'd prefer it...
Hey everybody, I'm updating my ht and am looking for input. I primarily use it for dvd, blu-ray, and HD quality .mkv files @1080p. My software of choice is MediaPortal and powerdvd 11 for bluray.
Right now what I have is an AMD Athlon x2 @ 2.4ghz, 8500GT, and 4gb ddr2 ram.
What I've...
ok, xeth and default are on the right track. So far I've heard it while running the Windows test, running CS:S at like 600fps, and Skyrim with my 570 at 90% load.
So is this something to be worried about, or does it just happen? The noise doesn't bother me, just don't want anything else to be...
.. and I mean that seriously. Well, I think is sounds like crying, my gf thinks its more like singing.
It's an Antec TP-750 and whenever the cpu and video card ramp up it's starts making a high pitched noise.
I think 750w should be enough for what I have in there, but I'm kinda worried...
So I'll be getting the last few parts in today, I'll be sure to take pics and post them up in here later.
Quick question though: With the 212+, should I use the cooler master thermal paste that comes with it, or would AS5 be better? I already have both, just wondering which to put on.
Thanks!
When I did my 8800gts, the process looked almost exactly like the pics from post #1
not much to see really. naked card goes into the oven, looks the same after it's put back together.
There's also the galaxy gtx570 right now for $289 after rebate. That's the one I went with as I figure it'll be easier for me to find a second gtx570 to sli in a year or two then the limited run 560ti448.
For a machine like that, there's really no reason to upgrade if it's still working and doing what you need it to do. Especially if it's not being used for gaming. I don't see how a new video card would at all affect how the system runs for you.
Lets see, my progression from the time I started building PCs at age 6:
Intel Pentium 200mhz MMX
- S3 Virge 2MB
- Voodoo 3 3000 16MB
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
- Geforce2 MX 32MB
- Geforce 4 TI4600
HP DV7000 Laptop - 3.06Ghz P4 w/ HT
- Geforce 5700M 128MB
AMD Opteron 165
- Geforce...
Is there really that little of a benefit with the H80? In the reviews I read it looked like it was performing pretty nicely and I always worry about heat issues.
That $70 is tempting though and is a good reason to drop the H80/OCZ and switch to a 212+ and 64GB Crucial M4.
thanks again for the help :) last call for suggestions.
What I have:
Antec 900
Antec TruePower New TP-750 750W
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Creative X-Fi gamer something Fatality (original, pci)
What I have in my shopping cart:
Intel Core...
That p67 at under $100 is perfect.
I'm thinking now of the evga classified version of the ti448. I Iike the way it looks.
right now I'm sitting at about $775 without the ssd. I think I'll just try to save up a while longer to buy the ssd after i get the system setup.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming. WoW, SC2, Skyrim, DIII, CS:GO
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
kinda flexible, but i'm ebaying stuff to afford it so keep budget in mind. maybe $650-$850 for the parts i need to buy.
3)...
If you're still looking, tigerdirect just put up some more after rebate cards:
MSI HD5450 $15ar
and
MSI 8400GS $10ar
just wanted to point that out as price seems to be a strong point of your search.
This card might have issues with N64 emulators but it should do everything else you need and for only $23ar
MSI GT210 (newegg)
It's just the updated version of the 8500gt I have in my htpc and that has been working for my mkv files, netflix streams, and bluray disks with no problems.
From what I've read, GTX260 c216 SLI ~ GTX480 ~ GTX570.
There would be a lot of advantages to upgrading, but a significant performance increase doesn't seem (from my paper research) to be one of them.
Hi all!
So right now I have my system with a Q9450 (specs in sig), my gf's tower running an oc E6700, and parts for a htpc based off of a x2 4600+.
I want to upgrade my system to a 2500k, keep my gf's current enough for a handful of games (Skyrim, WoW, SW:TOR, D3), and make sure my htpc...
Ah I'm so excited for the mix of 1.6/source mechanics and a resurgence of players into the CS community. CS has been my game of choice since 1.3 but after the cgs died a lot of the glamor of competitive play died (for me at least). Can't wait to jump back into it.
I've seen some zalman 9700s going for $20-$30 used recently. With that my q9450 was running 3.2 as if it were stock, and right now is holding stable @ 3.6 with a little higher voltage.
3ghz shouldn't be too hard though with any decent cooler.
To give you a comparison, just this week I swapped out the exact same sli kit, the evga superclocked 640 running at 622core/1900ram, for a single xfx gtx260/216 black edition and the single oc'd 260 performed slightly better then the SLI set in skyrim. (I upgraded because one of my 8800s died...
