    2012 MacPro

Can you name a 15" laptop with a resolution greater than 2880x1800? Even if you're not a fan of OS X, the new MBP is an absolutely incredible piece of hardware. The Mac Pro is dissapointing, though. The specs list for a computer that that runs for nearly 3 grand shouldn't read like it's from 2008.

    Post your Workstation 2012

This is what I tell everyone. We're an entirely Microsoft shop (all W7, Office 2010, Server 2008 R2 on Hyper-V, Exchange 2010, Lync 2010, Sharepoint 2010) and I think Microsoft makes an EXTREMELY good product with incredibly intuitive integration if you stay within their ecosystem. For home use...

    Corporate Messenger

Lync really blew me away. We are still only on Exchange 2003, but the integration it provides with Office, Outlook, Powerpoint, etc. are absolutely incredible. With the MS Partner program, it was practically free as well. I would highly recommend it.

1 big SSD vs 2x smaller SSD

Umm the Crucial M4 and Samsung 830 are considered on par with Intel's best consumer offerings (i.e. a tier above everything else in the consumer sphere). I'm not sure why you'd think the Sandisk is better than the M4. OP, we are running RAID 10 with 4x 512GB M4's in a test DB server at work...

Which flavor of virtualization is best for my home lab?

If you're into virtualization and have a second box to load it on, then definitely go with ESXi. The only time I'd consider going with Workstation is if I only had one machine. ESXi has made great strides in terms of hardware compatibility, I have built a handful of Sandy Bridge test machines...

Guys Hard Drive backup Question, im using Acronis

You guys are overcomplicating this, just drag the contents of the C: drive onto the backup drive, put the backup drive in a drawer, and then whenever the primary drive fails just swap them out.

    New iPad. Nice, but ...

Ehh I don't know. Pretty much anybody who has the iPhone 4 or even just compares the iPad 2 and iPad 3 side by side in a store will notice the incredible difference in clarity.

    Break my heart...what's the catch?

It looks like SATA...Does anybody know how loud these are? I have a pretty well insulated closet in my bedroom that houses all my gear, but if I'm going to have to deal with a constant humming when I'm sleeping I'll probably look elsewhere.

How to Completely and Utterly Lock Down a PC... (Well, maybe not completely...)

That whole environment sounds like a headache. I'd do the following: -Remove local admin rights -Update Java and Flash religiously -Unless IE is mission-critical for web apps, try a GPO-administered install of Chrome and add Adblock Plus -Create and enforce an acceptable use policy. I can say...

    Break my heart...what's the catch?

These seem ridiculously cheap, and I am looking at picking up maybe 2-3 for an ESXi setup. I have a handful of 1TB SATA II drives sitting around, so the lack of included storage is not an issue...

Running multiple PCI-E cards of the same brand/model?

Can anybody provide some insight into this? I have read in a few different places that running completely identical SATA controllers cards in the same machine will cause issues. I currently have a Vantec 4+1 (not exactly high-end), I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Using VM to run two OS on diff monitors?

I saw 91 views and 0 responses, so I will go ahead and give you something to work with: 1. VMWare Workstation runs on top of Windows. Create a VM for W7 and Ubuntu (fairly straightforward) and just run/interact with them in the console window or remotely. There will be some performance overhead...

Picking up a new Mac Mini need advice.

Picking up a new Mac Mini need advice.

I'd definitely get the SSD, most people who have a Macbook Air and a more powerful Macbook Pro/iMac actually say the Air feels faster day-to-day because of the SSD.

Same SSID for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz?

What would you guys advise? Are devices (mainly my iPad 2 and Latitude E6400) smart enough to pick 5GHz over 2.4GHz if both networks have the same SSID? Or should I make two separate SSID's for each?

Advice for a 19 year old?

Thank you for the advice. My ultimate goal is to become a developer/software engineer. That's a great idea, I never thought of that! When the sticky said "contribute to an open source project" I was only thinking of the big projects like Firefox.

Thanks. The room is pretty small (I'm a student living at home, tuition is expensive enough without the cost of housing :D). In terms of space efficiency, price, and design I don't think you can do much better. It has held up fine so far. I considered glue, but the veneer on top is an...

Need best video card for Dell Optiplex 755

Hard drive for DELL Optiplex 755 Mini Tower

In general, desktop computers come with 7200rpm drives and laptops come with 5400. To answer your question, mixing and matching will work. The only difference is that the 10,000 will have faster I/O.

    Installing a PCI SATA card?

Well I have a PCI-e 1x slot and a PCI slot in an old Optiplex that I've repurposed. The computer is used exclusively for backups, so the I/O speed limitation presented by the PCI slot is not a huge deal. Do you think it would make sense to get a PCI-e 1x card instead of PCI?

    Installing a PCI SATA card?

Hey everybody, If I were to get something like this, would it literally be a matter of installing the card, connecting the drives, and then once I power back on they would show up in Disk Management? Obviously there might be drivers to install if W7 doesn't have them built-in, but I'm not...
