    hitachi 5k3000 in a raid?

I currently have the Adaptec 51645 and I'm looking to upgrade my current raid array to about 8, 2TB drives. The 5K3000s look like a great price point and I'm happy with Hitachi, but I haven't heard much about using this particular model in a hardware-based raid array. Does anyone have any...

    Break up data storage systems?

Any thoughts on creating a new sub-forum for ssd and/or platter-based drives? It would make it a lot easier to sort through. A sub-forum for drive controllers wouldn't be a bad idea either.

What board to go with 875k & 8GB of G.SKILL?

I just got a deal on the i7 875k and the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB 1333 and am looking to finally upgrade from the e6400. I'm not looking for SLI (I'm just going to be putting my 9800gtx+ in there) and am indifferent about USB 3.0 (although they seem to have this more often than not). The...

    FreeBSD ZFS NAS Web-GUI

I would say rather than using FreeBSD, use OpenSolaris. It has a much better & up-to-date ZFS implementation. If you could give me a pre-built platform that just did ZFS really well ( in regards to performance, features and easy of use), I would (and others, I would imagine) jump at the...

Free alternative to windows scan software?

I just installed the drivers for my Epson scanner, and I was wondering if there are any free alternatives to the built-in windows software. The only real thing that the windows software is missing is a quick copy button. I could try finding and installing the old xp software, but it never...

Vista Home Premium --> 7 Professional... Best route?

I'm about to upgrade my parent's computer from Vista Home to 7 Professional via the student upgrade deal, and I was wondering what the best route for this would be. It appears that I cannot go directly from one to the other. Is it easiest to just use the migration utility, or is there a...

Random BSOD During Windows 7 Install

Does anyone have any ideas as to what would cause a different BSOD every time I try to install Windows 7 (64bit)? Sometimes it is 5 minutes after selecting the partition and hitting next, other times it doesn't even make it to the accept agreement screen. I ran memtest and didn't encounter any...

Tired of my 680i killing memory, upgrade thoughts?

Cheaper even, if you go for the 8 port (I have the 24 port). The 8 port goes for about 150 shipped. I mainly got it for the vlan capability.

Tired of my 680i killing memory, upgrade thoughts?

Sorry for the belated response, its been a busy week. After some deliberation, I've decided upon the GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P due to the extra ethernet port (allowing me to team them together). As well as some G.SKILL memory. Does anyone see any problems with this combo? Is there a better 4GB...

    Arctic Cooling ACF12PWM + Thermaltake 120?

yep, the thermalright ultra 120 extreme (as per my sig). Tired of my 680i killing memory, upgrade thoughts?

The P45 sounds good, any thoughts on a particular model? Even just looking at the ASUS P45s is overwhelming. What's the difference between all the ASUS boards? Turbo? Pro Turbo? -E? Deluxe? Are there internal PCI wireless NICs for small-form factor desktops (low profile)??

If you have a mini-pci wireless card lying around, you could always pick up a low profile mini-pci to pci adapter off of ebay, they even have multiple antennas.

Tired of my 680i killing memory, upgrade thoughts?

After my second 680i board killed a set of memory (my first 680i killed two sets before I RMAed it), I've decided that I've had enough. What would you guys recommend? Just swap the board for something new (and what)? Or new board, mem & cpu (i7 maybe)? My current setup is in my sig. Edit...

Stripe size, file system recommendations for RAID 6?

Thanks for the tip on the mount options, but it looks like nodiratime isn't needed if noatime is specified: http://lwn.net/Articles/245002/ (discovered after a quick google to figure out what noatime was). I'll go ahead and remove the sunit & swidth from fstab, one article I followed said to...

    New pfsense box, thoughts?

Yeah, I saw that board, but I couldn't justify the cost if I can just run vlans (one cable going between router and switch, and then just plug the modem into the switch). From what I've read, the intel board can use the dual slot pci riser, so I would just need to find a cheap case that has the...

My embedded alix setup just died after 7 months (yay :( ), and I've realized that for 20 bucks more than the cost of a new board, I can just go the Intel atom route (esp now that I have a switch that supports vlans). What are your thoughts on this jetway, this intel nic, with this memory...

Sorry for the delay, I just ran DBAN for like 20 minutes to clear the MBR, this is due to the MBR being located at the beginning of the drive. You can just power the computer down after running it for a bit and should be good.

Any ideas as to how one tells the firmware on the hitachi drives (I don't see any number that is immediately obvious)?
