    Seasonic Platinum-660 660W Power Supply Review @ [H]

"Paul's Thoughts: Is anyone still reading at this point of the review today? I mean, I don’t know what you really want me to say here since I would have bought this unit after page 4. Well, I guess, relative to other Seasonic units, like the PLATINUM-1000, this unit is kind of homely which...

Along the lines of SnapRaid, look at FlexRAID as well or Unraid.

Low power, "good enough" performing HTPC?

Thanks for checking. Sounds about right, slightly higher power consumption than my ASROCK Core100HT running an Arrandale i3. Those SandyBridge cpus(and I'm assuming IvyBridge as well) are really good for idle power consumption. Have seen quite a few articles where regardless of whether the...

Low power, "good enough" performing HTPC?

Great! Grab a measurement while idle and also while its doing something like playing a movie or whatnot.

Low power, "good enough" performing HTPC?

Verge, did you ever have a chance to do this? I'm still curious as to your power consumption. Also, post the setup too please. Just like to compare.

Which full tower case has the most HDD bay?

I'm running with the Fractal Define R3 and that has 8 3.5 HDD bays, and there's also 2 5.25 bays, which you can either mount two hdds in those 2 bays or can put an adapter bay in there which can convert the 2 bays into 3 3.5" bays. There's 10/11 bays right there, and I think the XL is a bigger...

Low power, "good enough" performing HTPC?

What's "hardly anything" to you? I think its a subjective question as everyone's perception of high power use is different. As an example, a HTPC I built based off a Pentium G620(Sandy Bridge) idles around 20W(measured from wall using a cheap kill-a-watt meter), while another older HTPC I...

Low power, "good enough" performing HTPC?

if you're looking for "low-power", then the 1155(sandy bridge or ivy bridge) options will hold a significant advantage over the older options which consume a lot more power, especially during idle times, which if its on 24/7 will be almost all the time.

Please evaluate my NAS solution for home use

Ah ok, well, if that's the reasoning why you didn't want to go with snapshot RAID-based solutions, that makes more sense. It just didn't make sense when you were mentioning that you were looking to upgrade the parity disk to bigger disk in the future, and how much hassle it was going to create...

    NAS + HTPC Help/Suggestions

Just to toss in a couple other options if you haven't tried em, both of which are snapshot RAID options: SnapRAID and FlexRAID.

Please evaluate my NAS solution for home use

Echoing Billy's thoughts on this as well...if you were "planning to throw in some 3TB drives in say a few months", I'm not sure any other RAID solution on the market will make it any easier on you, if you wanted to swap the 2TB parity disk with a larger one in the future. Based on my limited...

Please evaluate my NAS solution for home use

Again, you have flummoxed me! :) how do you choose a 3TB drive for parity, if you only have physically have 2TB drives?

Please evaluate my NAS solution for home use

Not sure what you mean by a con being that "you have to choose the larger disk for parity(today's larger may not be tomorrow's larger)"? You want to choose a smaller disk for parity? If you decide to replace the parity drive with a larger one, all you would have to do is copy the parity data...

Have you considered Flexraid, which is pretty much snapraid with drive pooling using a GUI interface?

    Media Server #3

Or look into setting up snapshot raid with either snapraid or flexraid, if the data in your collection doesn't change much.

Flexraid now costs $... any alternative?

Not sure why you're likening it to extortion. The way it works is a RAID layer over your existing drives. If you were on the beta and choose not to upgrade to the paid final version, all you have to do is uninstall Flexraid, and your data is still on the drives, in the original filesystem...

    HTPC Component Advice

Just to toss another wrinkle into the discussion. Perhaps consider buying one of the barebones ASROCK HTPC style computers(http://www.asrock.com/nettop/index.asp), which comes with a reasonable CPU for HTPC use and add whatever RAM/SSD/HDD you want. I bought myself one of the older models a...

What are you guys storing your media on?

Just FYI, FlexRaid can run on top of Windows or Linux. I'm running it off Ubuntu 11.04 myself. Mainly so I can get myself more familiarised with Linux as well. So if you want to try Flexraid AND Linux, do that.

Switched filesystems and used space changed.

Like Volkin said, it sounds suspiciously like the 5% default reserved space that ext4 automatically allocates. Don't know if XFS has something similar, but maybe it doesn't so that would explain why it seems you're not using less space on XFS.

Intel chipset = hardware raid ??

I think technically, the Intel chipset based RAID is termed "firmware" RAID(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Matrix_RAID) but I would be inclined to say its more *software* RAID than hardware raid as you put it.

Virtualized storage server or bare metal? Pros/Cons?

There might be some confusion here, or I may be mistaken myself. AFAIK, the OP isn't talking about virtualizing the storage, thats just a point some others in the thread have brought up. To answer OP's latest question --> I don't have any experience with ESXi, so take everything I say with...

    Wireless home theater audio system

I bought a Logitech Z5450 5.1 speaker system as well 5 years ago and its been working well for my purposes. I'm no audiophile so its plenty good enough for me. Like B34M3R said, remember that the rear speakers still need power, but similar to that situation, I had power points behind the couch...

Best Off The Shelf HTPC With Blu-Ray?

I've got an ASROCK Core 100HT-BD, which was the model before Sandy Bridge models were released, and I'm totally happy with mine. Installed 64GB SSD, a 1gb HDD on it, run Win7 and XBMC on it and runs great. Doesn't use much power at all and virtually silent(well, I can't hear anything, and its...

    Linux-based home server/NAS

Ya, I had trouble finding the 330W SII2 seasonic as well in Australia. Only managed to find it while on holiday in Hong Kong, and it was cheap as chips in HK, about $35. Looks like they don't have it released in US or Aus. In terms of cases, have you considered a Fractal Design Array? I was...

    Linux-based home server/NAS

I have a question. Is there any real need for such a "beefy" PSU? I understand "beefy" would be a relative term here, but if you're running headless or using integrated graphics, 500W(or that 650W you're looking at) would be overkill I think as if the server/NAS will be idle most of the time...

new DIY NAS project, lots of questions!

Been looking at some numbers on SPCR, comparing the pico psus with a relatively efficient(ie. bronze or gold) psu, and the differences seem to be minimal at idle(a couple of watts), so for convenience and ease of sourcing, I think I'll just go with a Seasonic S12II-330Bronze first for like 40...

new DIY NAS project, lots of questions!

Yeah I was thinking about the ATOM platform, but figured I'll go with the new sandy bridge processors because knowing myself, I'm going to start off with a simple NAS box, but I know as I start delving into it and tinkering, I'm going to want to use it for more things such as virtual machines...
