If we were talking PS4 vs the new xbox, I'd be inclined to agree with you. As it stands, the Wii U vs PS4 is a completely different race, and targets fairly different segments (yes, still gamers, but look who the audiences are).

As said above, to run an independent vm as a htpc off esxi, you basically have to passthrough a gpu and a USB hub (unless the USB receiver you have can be passed through individually - the ones I've seen act similar to mice/kb's and can't). With that said, passthrough in itself has caveats...
