Thanks for the link but I had found and tried that. It didn't work for me ( at least under ESXi 5.1 ). I'll try it again later this evening to rule out any mistake on my part.

Call me stupid but even with hours of googling I came across loads of command line examples but not one example or direction on how to get to a command line!!! :( How or where do I type these commands, every example assumes one has access to the this command line so excuse my obvious...

I've had a quick look at those motherboards but they dont seem to have an PCEi x16 slot so I couldn't use my HPP410 raid card in that...At least I dont think it would work in an x8 slot. Any other recommended boards that would have at least one if not more x16 slots?

Ok, tried this...You are correct...It seems even if I disconnect all internal 4 drives, the esata card sees and reports 8 drives in its bios but the Proliant only gets to see 7 of them. Doesnt matter what order I put them in, only 7 get passed through to Proliant bios... :confused:

I have the N36L and have installed a PCIex1 card with two esata connectors. This I have attached to an 8 bay esata enclosure. Two connectors from the enclosure to the card. The Proliant on boot allows entry into the esata cards bios which correctly lists the 8 drivesin the external enclosure...

The HP P410 Smart Arrray controller also works well. Others have used the HP P212 also.

Worst thing as that as drive capacities grow, so to does the loss of space due to the 1000 v 1024 descriptive capacities. So your brand new 4TB will really only be 3.7TB...Thats a loss of 276GB

There are no issues with 3TB drives with Win7 if used as data drives. Just use a GPT partition instead of MBR to partition the drives larger than 2TB. The only other thing to remember is you cannot boot from a drive larger than 2TB using a standard bios. But since your OS will be on SSD...

If you read the terms of the upgrade, you do not return your old drives. You get to keep them. You only need to prove possession of the drives by supplying the serial numbers. So you end up with two drives....:)

Why not try unRaid or FlexRaid then?

The HP P410 Smart Array Raid controller is a perfect fit and has the right connectors and in the right location regards angles and lengths.

I'm running WHS2011 RTM in a HyperV VM under Win2008 R2 which is using a HP P410 for hardware raid 5...WHS2011 looks after home pcs backups an works like a dream...Win 2008 R2 holds and streams my media...Works like a dream.

Well, its cheaper than buying an additional server with an additional HP raid card, more ram, another OS license (if using MS) , etc...Plus who really wants 2 servers if you can accomplish the same with 1. I know I would prefer to have one server to manage all storage.... What benefits are...

What are you holding or storing the 4 external drives in, that you can take power from the server and how/where do you get the power connector(s) from? Any pictures? Or a detailed description? And is the 5.25 inch bay powered by just one power connector also for all 4 drives?

Strange, I swapped the position of the 2 drives in one of the boxes and it worked fine then???? I was able to initialise and format the 4TB and copy to it over esata. Took 10.5 hours for 4TB (3.63TB) using robocopy....
