QNIX UHD4020R - New Korean Monitor - 40" UHD FreeSync Curved

Awesome find, thanks. The only big question in my mind was input lag. If I read that right, it looks like about 30ms. Not great, but I wouldn't call it bad either. This is not a fast refresh monitor, and not really a top choice for gaming. Under those circumstances, so far it's looking good to me.

QNIX UHD4020R - New Korean Monitor - 40" UHD FreeSync Curved

That's interesting. Can you explain why you think it's based on the 6500 and not the 7500 panel? You are probably right (I have no specific knowledge of this), I'm just curious about all the details. Unless this monitor tests out poorly, I think I will be getting one soon.

    Crucial Ballistix 8GB (2x4) DDR3 - $35.99

I'll never forget the bad batches of Ballistix DDR2 back in 2008. It was a large number; somewhere in the thousands I think. I was one unlucky user. That RAM not only went bad, it took out my entire motherboard with it. There was a whole raft of internet users who got burned by this. Fool me...

    Best "backup" or "cloud" software??

This was absolutely true as of a year ago. They probably have improved it since then. I know this because all the 3rd party reviewers commented on it as well. Makes sense, since I can't find any old reviews anymore (they have been supplanted by newer ones). Are you this much of an asshole...

So there is a new 4X Game (Endless Space) that is actually REALLY good....

Thanks a million times for the review. I saw this advertised on Steam, but I mistakenly skipped over looking at it until this review. Does anyone know if the game is community-enhanceable (mods)?

YUP. That's exactly what I was thinking. One hardware failure, and bam you pay for another account if you want your data.

Which type of Flat/Satin Black Paint for a Computer Desk?

If you really want it to be bling, you could also try using a 3M vinyl wrap: http://www.aerotectfilms.com/Scotchprint-1080.html I actually plan on doing this in the future (after I buy a house) by building a custom MDF desk and finishing it with vinyl. :)

    Black Ops 2 revealed - November 13th

LOL, Activision just pissed of Anonymous. Not a bright long term maneuver methinks. http://www.examiner.com/article/anonymous-targets-activision-ceo-after-call-of-duty-insult Apologies if this was posted elsewhere, I didn't see any references to it here.

    Recommended GPGPU card

Are you set on using CUDA? OpenCL is a standard now, and is portable across many hardware implementations. Furthermore, ATI's hardware is better suited toward integer arithmetic (NVIDIA is horribly slow at integer math), so you might consider this if your application is non-FP. If I were...

Moore’s Law Will End In 10 Years

Economics is already killing progress. NVIDIA has said publicly that the mask costs for 28nm are so high it's a marginal choice over 32nm. Generally speaking, new geometries are 2x as expensive to target as the previous node. Since performance gains are <2x at each node, the math will...

Apple VP Sells 95% Of His Company Shares

Actually, if people were saying he was a possible successor to Steve Jobs, he might very well be leaving the company. Seeing as how Jobs' successor has already been chosen, he might be leaving for greener pastures. If he's leaving, then selling his shares isn't that unusual.

    Question for speaker experts

If they are old speakers, you probably will not find the correct replacements anyways. Bose are such poor quality that it makes almost no sense to repair them. No offense, but this is like duct taping the bumper back on your Yugo and thinking it's safe. :)

    i5 3750k vs Q9550

Actually, you are right. I went from 4g to 8g RAM, so that had an effect too I'm sure. I can't say how much contribution the CPU made directly, but it was noticeable. Disk was the same, GPU was the same (GPU is not in the picture here anyways).

Why Infinity Ward's Chief Call of Duty Strategist Quit.

Your insults notwithstanding, I realize now that I should not have posted my thoughts. I do indeed still have a general hatered for PC gamers (as a generalized group), but it was not appropriate to post it here. If anyone was insulted, I apologize.

Why Infinity Ward's Chief Call of Duty Strategist Quit.

"Reported"? Who are you thinking is going to report it? That hardly excuses it. I have never met a PC gamer who could rationally converse about the COD* franchise. This is a personal opinion, so feel free to disagree with it. However, my own experience has been entirely consistent with...

Why Infinity Ward's Chief Call of Duty Strategist Quit.

It's all fine and dandy until angry gamer nerds threaten you or your family. I have firsthand knowledge that when IW first declared there will be no dedicated servers in COD2, they had multiple bomb threats called in to their office. I know about 50% of the Respawn guys personally, so I knew...

    i5 3750k vs Q9550

Others here have good specific questions for you. I wanted to add that I made this transition just recently. I was a Q9550 user for 2 years, and I recently upgraded to an i7-2600k. I do run a lot of CPU-heavy jobs though (this is a CAD computer). The difference in performance was dramatic...

Advice on a homebuilt, ZFS-based NAS

If all you are doing is backups and streaming to 2 devices, I think what you are proposing is overkill. Obviously you can build the system any way you choose to, but let me offer you an example of my system here: ASRock M350 ITX board (AMD E350 cpu) 4G of DDR3 Lian-Li Q08 case (just right...

    Best "backup" or "cloud" software??

FWIW, I did my own little review of the popular Carbonite and Mozy. I know you seem to be leaning toward the more basic cloud-storage options, but here's my findings on the two backup-specific ones: Mozy was a no-go, because buried in their TOS was the nice little gem: you can only...

OCZ Vertex 3 120 any good? $87 new?

For the record, I have worked as a semiconductor hardware designer for 13 years. I know how this works. ;) Binning is not the same as using under-spec parts. I don't care who bins what as long as the product works according to how it is marketed. The problem as I see it is that OCZ is...

    P8Z68 DELUXE/GEN3

I've never seen this on a production mobo before, so I wouldn't say it's normal. However, I would not have RMA'd the board for this (RMAs take forever no matter who you're dealing with). You can get some isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth and clean it off. The alcohol evaporates...

OCZ Vertex 3 120 any good? $87 new?

You are welcome to come to your own conclusions about this. This subject was beaten to death like a year ago, and you can use Google to listen to both sides of the argument. I have concluded that OCZ uses low end parts in order to boost their profit margins, which matches the very high defect...

http://blog.macsales.com/9438-not-all-ssd%E2%80%99s-are-created-equal-the-story-continues This has been verified (at the time) by users checking their drives for non-A grade parts. My understanding is that this is one of the reasons OCZ can sell their drives cheaper than competitors. EDIT...

OCZ Vertex 3 120 any good? $87 new?

OCZ has largely fixed all firmware-related issues. However, the one issue they have not fixed is poor flash quality. It is known that they source B-grade chips to use in their drives, and as a result their failure rate is significantly higher than others. Apparently their manufacturing is not...

Achieva Shimian QH270| $400 IPS 2560x1440 Korean Monitor

I did the same thing with mine. I disassembled everything I could, and re-plugged all the cables. I'm sure it was not a cable connection issue. IMHO the internal cabling is poor, because they aren't very securely fastened. I can see why they might come loose in shipping.
