I built an AMD whitebox myself some time ago. Intel wasn't an option since the only chipset that support ECC memory and run with i5/i7 is the 3450 chipset (if I'm not mistaken). AMD has ECC support on a wide range of chipsets. http://communities.intel.com/thread/12334

If you are going for AMD and building a whitebox you might want to wait for the 900-family chipset. All 900 chipset have IOMMU support opposite to the 890FX which is the only 800-family chipset that have IOMMU and few motherboard manufactures support it in their BIOS...
