Versions, circa 1980: Name - Indicates what the product does. First Number - Structure of the program. Second Number - Major change to program. Third Number - Bug fixes, update. ie - 3.10.2 = Third complete compiling. 10 major feature changes. 2 bug fixes. So I'm thinking MS Office is...

    Microsoft: Office 2013 Service Pack 1 Coming Q1 2014

It's hard to believe there has already been two thousand and thirteen versions of Office. Most of our machines are still loaded with Version 2000. As far as I can tell, all the math is still the same, and all the words are spelled the same, so why change?

Don't read this. Call your ISP. Complain that your speeds are terrible. Tip the guy at least $40 for his trouble. Now, put in some good equipment. Reap the rewards. How about 220mb on a 50mb contract? He tried to boost the speed when it was just a crappy router doing it. What router...

Air Force Plans to Arm Next-Gen Fighters with Laser Weapons

I'm not sure. Iraq had the same kind of air defense system as Russia (and many other countries). You are told by ground controllers what to do. Do you think Saddam or his generals told them to fly to Iran? Or was there a general who defected?

Here's what I can say. They are still making spares for RF-4x's. Rumor - An Israeli RF-4x that was specially modified hit >2,100 mph on a Syrian run. That was a very defective aero design with two huge engines. Kinda like a MiG-25.

In any case, just like the Vietnam War, it was found that you need a cannon, not just missiles. The MiG-29 has a very good predictive gunsight on it's 30mm cannon.

Bullets AND butter. We need both. Currently we spend about $2k a year per person in the US for the Common Defense. Total Federal taxes are about $12k per year. This does not include State, County, or Local taxes. Federal taxation started as a method to pay for a common defense...

Air Force Plans to Arm Next-Gen Fighters with Laser Weapons

No, the M-60's did well, even though they were obsolete. In fact, it's smallish 105mm rifled gun defeated the T-72 armor. Keep in mind, an M1 fired a 120mm HEAT right at a T-72 on a frontal shot, and it had no effect. The only tank known to have killed an M1 (discounting friendly fire) is a...

Air Force Plans to Arm Next-Gen Fighters with Laser Weapons

Front to front, a T-72 is a superior tank to an M-60, which has it's roots in the Sherman from WWII. We had tactics. They lost their communication infrastructure.
  18. Q

Air Force Plans to Arm Next-Gen Fighters with Laser Weapons

We first acquired air superiority and disabled their communications. Then, we freakin terrorized them with air power for a month. Once you have air superiority, you pretty much can do whatever you fuckin want. :-D The Iraqi's made a push into SA, which was a tough fight, but we stopped...

Sometimes new 7970's pop up in the $275 region. When they do, that's the card. Other than that the GTX 670's are right in that area too. Either one will smoke a 480 without breaking the bank.

Air Force Plans to Arm Next-Gen Fighters with Laser Weapons

Do some research. The T-72 could punch holes in a M1 from the side. The MiG-29 was perhaps the equal to the F-15 in a dogfight. The Iraqi troops had been in an extended desert war for about 10 years with this equipment. We knew the Iraqi's weren't going to run away. And we knew they...

FCC May Relax Ban on In-Flight Cell Phone Use

Here's a question for the Pussies. If there was a 0.0001% chance that cell devices could crash the plane on landing, would you sue the FAA for allowing it when there is crash? I don't have a fear of flying, but I acknowledge the risk. I normally get a window seat near the exit, and I look at...

Air Force Plans to Arm Next-Gen Fighters with Laser Weapons

I went to General Dynamics in San Diego, California to witness a Union Carbide synthetic ruby laser. It was a solution looking for a problem in 1970. To this day, the yield from a laser ain't shit. I'd rather hit them with a MASER and melt every IC chip on board.

A 80486DX cost less than a 80386+387 by a large margin. And the hotrod 286/287's were nearly as fast for much less $. 32 bit was not popular in any area but CAD until after the 486DX was released. Think OS/2 and Microchannel. Just a small fraction of the market.

The Intel 386 chip and the Compaq machines were over twice as expensive as the 286's/ Look on Fleabay for old 386 machines. Then look for old 486DX family machines. The 386 wasn't around that long.

IIRC, the 386 was not that popular. It was expensive, nothing needed 32 bits, and you need to buy a stupid expensive 80387 chip to run any 32-bit software. A tuned 286/287 was as fast in the real world, for about $1000 less.

I will have to just say, I don't remember that our 286's would not run it. I played it before I had a 486. and I never owned a 386, as far as I can remember. Note that a 80286 is a segmented chip. It runs in "20 bit"? mode.

Gotta disagree with that. DOOM was a DOS app. All DOS apps had to deal the 640k and 64k issues. DOS cannot directly see anything above 640k. EMM386, etc, were how to get around it. 80286 was THE chip until Compaq released a stupid expensive 80386 system. Borland C was the Big Dawg. In...

DOH!! Getting senile I suppose. What we did before Windows, was to use DOS extenders like Phar Lap, and IIRC, both the Borland and MS C compilers also had extenders with them. You still had to deal with the "640k" problem since certain things had to be directly addressable, but now you...
