    Replacing NAS with VM host

I couldn't even install ESXi 5.5. I think I'll have to pick up a NIC that is supported first. Found a TP-Link in a local store that is supposed to work so I'll get one of those after work.

    Replacing NAS with VM host

I was thinking 4GB to FreeNAS, 1 to each web server, 1 to pfSense and the rest for the hypervisor. It's pushing it but I think it will be fine. Do you think I could run ESXi if I just get a supported NIC? Any recommendations on a supported card?

    Replacing NAS with VM host

My FreeNAS machine just died so I'm trying to come up with the cheapest possible way to replace it. It would be awesome to get an all in one solution for running a few VMs. I would need a firewall (pfSense), FreeNAS (or something that can import my old raidz) and 2 web servers (low load) I've...

    VT-D/VGA Passthrough?

I ment switching as you describe in your second paragraph. If you read my post again you can see that I talk about two VMs. One would run Linux and the other Windows. I wouldn't want to use the host as my workstation though. What I would like to achive is a scenario where I can run my linux...

What do you use VMs for at home?

If you are using XenServer you might want to change your signature, it says Xen 6.0 which doesn't exist. Xen is not the same thing as XenServer. If you switch to XCP it supports DMC I really can't see the point of using XenServer instead of XCP if you look at this feature comparison...

    VT-D/VGA Passthrough?

I'm thinking of building a setup like this. Would love to have my workstation running linux but at the same time I would like to be able to easily switch to my Windows VM for the occasional gaming session. How easy is it to switch between the two VMs? GPU would be one 5870 with 3 screens. So...

My ZFS / Nexenta HA cluster build

I think a dedicated 10Gbit link should be enough for me for the replication. I'll have to do some testing on that but worst case I can just add more cards. How is your replication going to work? Will it be only internal in the JBOD? I have no experience in dual port SAS or that type of...

My ZFS / Nexenta HA cluster build

Thanks for posting this! I'm planning something similar for work so it's very interesting to get more opinions and ideas. While quickly browsing through the manual for the JBOD, it doesn't seem very redundant to me though. Isn't CSE-PTJBOD-CB2 a SPOF or am I missing something? I'm...

Q6600 abysmal BF3 performance: upgrade vid card now, or wait for Ivy Bridge?

I'm on a Q6600 with a 1GB 5870. I would love to use my eyefinity setup of 3240x1920 (3x 23") for BF3 but right now it's almost unplayable as you can imagine. Main interest isn't gaming so I'm not spending that much on it, nothing crazy like a dual 7970 or something. I don't need high settings...

    Best online/hard drive backup options?

I think Crashplan is easy, with some minor guidance I think most end users would be able to install it without any trouble. Edit: Al thought this seems to be easy to solve from the staff side, teach them what and when things get backed up so they won't have to assume anything. If they need...

    24-bay hot-swap other than Norco 4224?

I don't think preconfigured is an option, mounting 24 drives isn't that much work and this case would only hold drives. Stressing the drives I would do on my own. Sound isn't a problem either, this will be hosted in a server room which is already very loud ;)

    24-bay hot-swap other than Norco 4224?

The fail light isn't the most important feature, it would be nice though. Why I look at SM and Chenbro is mainly for the quality. Would be interesting to hear your reasons if you would like to share though? Does anyone know if the HP cards work with the expander in the Supermicro 846E16 case?

    24-bay hot-swap other than Norco 4224?

I've been looking at Supermicro SC846E16-R1200B and Chenbro RM41824. The Norco 4224 isn't an option in this case since from what I've heard it doesn't even have a failed drive LED? Is there anything else the case is missing compared to the ones i've posted? This would be used as a DAS to a...

[NEWS] Chenboro SAS2 6G Expander Board

I got a quote from a Swedish distributor and they told me 3 days. So for anyone in EEA that could be the fastest way?

On a related note, if you buy more then say 10, do you also make sure they are from different batches?

    HP SAS Expander Owner's Thread

Anyone tested dual link (link aggregation) on any HP cards like the P411 or P410? Would be nice to know if the P411 is supported since then I can use them instead of buying extra Areca cards.

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Anyone used Areca cards in HP servers? Thinking about buying a 1880x for a DL380 G7 because the HP cards doesn't seem to be that good. Weird that HP don't have anything like the ixl-8 with 1 ext and 2 int, P812 would be the alternative I guess...

    HP SAS Expander Owner's Thread

If I use a Norco 4224 filled with 24x 2TB Regular SATA drives would I notice any big difference in speed with dual linking the expander to a Areca 1880x or is one SFF-8088 between the HBA and expander "enough". Probably a vague question but I'm planning my storage solution and I'm not sure if I...

Do Z68 boards support VT-d for ESXi?

Any results? I went ahead and bought the P8B WS, but i cheaped out and got the 1230. I figure I could live with running an extra card for more screens for now...

Do Z68 boards support VT-d for ESXi?

Do you know if it's possible to use both the on chip GPU and an external card at the same time? Right now I'm running an old Nvidia PCI as an extra just to get my 3rd screen connected.

LSI Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA HBA and RAID cards)

Is it possible to run a LSI 9211-8i in a x4 pci-e port? Its physicaly a x16 but i just found out that its wired as a x4. My motherboard (Asus E35M1-I) doesn't find it at all, while it works fine if i plug it into a x8 port on a diffrent MB. Thanks for any feedback on this issue.

    HP ProLiant MicroServer owners' thread

I was thinking about getting this one, add an ARC 1680 or 1880 card and 4 x 2TB drives + 1 OS drive in the 5.25. Looks like a nice little file server that can handle 6TB in Raid 5. Just have to find good drives and the controller card.

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Crap! I was also aiming for the F4. Merlinen, if you find any good drives please let me know. I was looking at the Hitachis from Dustin but it would be nice with a low power drive. Did you get your 1680 from fyxim? Trying to find a reseller in Sweden but I think I will just get it in the...

    Show Your LCD(s) setups!!!

This is my setup of 3x 23" Dell u2311h and 1x 24" LG 245 in the background. Haven't hooked it up yet buy I have a spare PCI card laying around for it. I think will flip over to portrait when I get the LG hooked up. Still need at least one screen in landspace for movies and such. But as...
