Here's a silly thought that I could use an opinion or or two on about motherboard standoffs:
I have a Gigabyte GA-7PESH2 motherboard (SSI-EEB) that I am installing in a Cooler Master MasterBox case.
Most of the standoff holes line up with the exception of three of them. For these, I used a...
Up for auction is the board that I removed from my decommissioned htpc.
Gigabyte GA-EP43T-UD3L Motherboard (Intel LGA 775), Pentium e6500, 4GB Memory
I will have a Tyan S5220 server board and an XFX HD 5770 video card listed tomorrow as well.
Eventually I will also have lian-li desktop case...
I have finally upgraded my main desktop, or I am in process rather, and have put the board, cpu and ram up for sale.
Never abused or overclocked.
GA-EX58-UD5
Core i7-920
12GB OCZ Ram
Avocent DVI KVM Switch
I'm doing almost this exact same thing in my entertainment center, except I just have a single 120mm exhaust fan, with the intake just around the door gaps.
I first started off with a rosewill, it was decently quiet but started growling after about 3 months. I replaced it with a vantec...
I was VERY surprised to find a box from ecost on my door this evening!
Didn't get an email or anything, last time I checked my order status showed "discontinued"
I ordered from eCost.com on Sunday morning, still waiting on a final confirmation, but when I log in and check order status, it says "backordered"
Correct me if I'm wrong but it's really only HP that is going to get more of these things right?
I fixed one of these on a motherboard once by putting some glue only on the edge and carefully putting it back on with tweezers.
I've plugged and unplugged sata cables from it several times without any issues.
You could put glue on the back side of the pins, but if you happen to get any...
this thread just keeps coming back...
word to the wise: Don't buy any WD green drive with the expectation of running TLER.
Even if you manage to get one that still allows you to enable it, the first time you have to RMA one chances are you're going to get a non TLER capable drive back...
The addition of virtualbox is awesome, and what Ive really wanted to do with a zfs server for a while..
So I can run zfsguru as a storage backend.. then whs 2011 in virtualbox for my pc backups..
That is EXACTLY what I wanted to do as well..and its something I intend to play with..
Apparently virtualbox supports a raw zvol for storage, and there's a PHP web interface that could integrate nicely.
.
Maybe all the moaning and groaning we did actually did some good?
WD replaced 5 of my WD10EADS drives with RE drives because the drive I got back from RMA didn't support TLER.
If you need TLER, you're going to have to buy the RE series drives..
Even if you get lucky and get a new EADS drive that you can turn TLER on, if you
ever have to RMA it, chances are the one you get in return won't.
Been down that road before..
CCTL stands for Command Completion Time Limit, and as I understand it, is part of the SMART specification. So any drive that supports SMART will support an error timeout of some kind.
These are desktop class drives, samsung isn't "actively" preventing you from using them in a Raid array, but...
So what is the timeout for error recovery on Hitachi drives?
I think the major concern for desktop drives without TLER is that if one drive happens to fall out of the array do to it entering deep recovery, the rest of the drives are then put under additional load during rebuild..increasing...
I tried the above procedure last night, adding my Samsung HD204UI to the pool as a GPT partition and it worked perfectly, just
a little time consuming. It helps on some of the commands to redirect them to a .txt file so you can copy + paste them into the registry.
I'm still not sure its...
Welcome to the nightmare.
For years WD allowed you to enable TLER on THE "EADS" (WD10EADS,WD20EADS) series of green drives, this has been disabled on newer drives.
Some people get lucky and get a drive you can still enable it on, but if you have to RMA it chances are you'll get one back that...
Hey Sub, you need a donate button on your site.. you deserve a beer for all your hard work.
I'm guessing this is a slippery slope as far as the forum rules go though..
This has probably been answered somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it..
Can you use different size drives in a ZFS pool? How about different mfg / models of the same capacity?
Yes but in vail if you have duplication turned off for a share, and you loose any disk in the system, you are more than likely going to loose everything that isn't duplicated.. that coupled with just how buggy vail is in it's current state make me want to stretch v1 that much longer..
Thanks...
Whats the benefit of flashing to the LSI firmware?
I've got (2) 6 i/r cards and it seems the rule of thumb is that they will work without any taping of the pins in a server-class board.
I've tried them in a Tyan s5220 and an Intel s5000 board and they work fine, but to get them to work in...
If you use standard .vhi /.vhd files to store the VM, you are limited to 2TB each..
If you can export your pool using iscsi, virtualbox can connect to it and treat it as one big disk..
I'm sorry this is incorrect..or it was as of about 2 months ago..
I RMA'd a WD10EADS that allowed TLER and received a replacement that didn't allow TLER.. after fighting with WD about a month they replaced all 5 of my drives with RE series drives..
I'm so glad you're taking the headache out of iscsi configuration. I tried for hours to make it work, even following the example on your website and I still couldn't make it work.
I would love to be able to run iscsi along with virtualbox to run a whs vm directly from my storage server...
Those figures for the HD204UI drives looks very promising.
Is that with NCQ turned off and GNOP enabled?
Whats the general rule of thumb in the ZFS world where Raidz2 is necessary over Raidz?
Greater than 6 disks?
Yes I know that it would involve dumping the data and recreating the pool.
When you find a good shrink, let me know.. I need to talk to them as well..
I know that the "Deathstar" days are behind them, I just haven't been able to let it go.
Back in 03, I worked on a Dell server that had a 5...
I've got 4 of these Samsung F4's that I was hoping to use in a Raidz, and then eventually get 2 more and migrate to a Raidz2..
So is the general consensus that these drives should be avoided for ZFS?
Is speed the only really problem?
Well, I've had to RMA my main test motherboard, the S5000, but in the mean time I've setup a new test system and I've run into a bit of a problem..
Specs:
Intel Xeon E3110 2x 3.0Ghz
2GB DDR2 ( yea its small, buts its all I had to spare )
Tyan S5220 motherboard
Perc 6 I/R HBA
5x WD 1TB...
I toying with the idea of running virtualbox-ose on my Freebsd 8.1 server I'm working on.
But I'd like the ability to put the server to sleep or hibernate for most of the day.
My question is, how does Virtualbox respond when the host goes to sleep?
Somehow I think I'm just begging for...
Total usage without any drives attached is about 120 Watts using my kill-a-watt.
Not great, but what the hey... unfortunately that board needs fbdimms
The 1Gb chips that are in it were only $15 bucks a piece, I guess if I had bought 2 x 2Gb sticks my power usage would be a little lower...
