If you run a server, and done your homework, you should know about these drives. HGST also makes these drive up to 10TB but at higher cost per TB and unknown reliability at this point. Also I would hate to resilver a 8TB drive.

I thought I would share my latest server build for folks looking for a relatively small server case that could accommodate
at least 10 3.5" drives. ( Currently 11 x 4TB HGST) My requirements required hot swappable bays accessible from the front. (I like blinking lights :)

Just purchased from Amazon... Price vs stats can't be beat ATM. After a few days without a case my impressions are... Size.. takes a bit to get use to but love it. Speed... Excellent.
My one negative comment would have to be the fact that it does not lay flat on a surface.. so typing on a...
Building a new server and I wish to install a 10 x 4TB raidz2. I already have 5 WD RED 4TB drives form another server and need 5 more drives.
I have been leaning toward the HSGT 4TB NAS drives to complete the system but have doubts if I should just go all WD Red. I know I can safely do (2) 5 x...

Need details of how to mount 2x3.5 drives in ODD space. I purchased a Nexus Doubletwin but since the cage does not slide out, how do I mount the bracket. I can't figure out how to screw the mount into the sides of the cage..
Thanks!
You can try mounting the remote server's drive via NFS. For solaris/Unix based systems you can enter
mount -F nfs (IP ADDRESS):/share2 /Any_folder in terminal.
This will mount the file system /share2 located on the host (IP ADDRESS) to the mount point /Any_folder
I find that NFS transfers...
To simplify your setup just get Napp-It It will allow you to configure cifs/samba sharing and allow control over 100's of settings with a GUI.
See this extensive thread for more info.
Search for TonyMacx86 and start learning. I would suggest using one of the compatible Gigabyte MB's listed. I use a Gigabyte GA-Z68MX-UD2h-B3 with 16 gigs of ram and 10TB raid array. It is very stable and everything works..I have windows 7 running with Parallels so seamlessly its amazing. After...
Is there any way to remove/disable the afp or netatalk server once installed to solaris Express 11?
I cant live with the .AppleDouble directories it creates. I have looked around but don't see an answer. It was installed using Gea's method.
Thanks!
Thank you for your detailed response to my inquiry. I do use napp-it on 2 servers running Solaris 11 Express (Home Use-Video streaming and storage).
I was just curious as it seems this ZFS port seems like a very serious project being developed by some of the engineers that were responsible for...
Gea..
With all the hard work you put into napp-it I'm sure your very busy but do you have any plans or desire to support Mac OSX ZFS? I'm currently Beta testing the Z-410 storage system for the Mac from http://tenscomplement.com/ . I have a 5 drive raidz set up but I miss your napp-it GUI.

I am having a strange problem with replication. Both systems running Solaris 11 Express and Napp-it 03.07. 0.500s. The problem occurs only when replicating my large (5.6T) zfs folder. Replication stops at 5.17T for this folder but other smaller ZFS folders replicate fine. I have done this...
Found this:
Corsair today updated its DDR3 memory family with a new low profile memory module -- the Vengeance LP. Corsair reports that the Vengeance LP memory feature heat spreaders with a reduced height of 1.03" (26.25 millimeters), compared to the standard height of 1.87" (47.37...
Incremental replicate resets smb and nfs sharing to "off" on backed up shares. Is there a way to retain sharing (smb & nfs) or must I manually reset sharing every time?
Thanks! I serve video from the backup server as it is more power efficient.
Thank you for explaining the reason for needing the RDONLY flag set "on". In the future I will not mess with the attributes as read only should be enough for a back-up data set.
Question:
Why are all the new ZFS file-systems created by replication rdonly? What is the danger of changing rdonly to off? Did I make a fatal mistake?
I was just playing around and noticed if I re-ran the replication job after changing the folder to read-write I somehow lost the file system...
OI is a great choice so don't second guess yourself. Napp-it will accelerate your learning curve like no other software. Gea's GUI has made installing and maintaining easy for even novice users. One point however OI is not linux but rather unix :)
Gea..
Thank you for your quick reply and valuable insight into this replication feature.
Is there no way to do a "reverse replication". Since I can't setup a new job without creating a new folder, (can't target original zfs folder) is there a way to "time slide" from backup system B to...
netcat / replication speed
Gea..
I'm finding the speed to replicate a large zfs folder very slow. To transfer and replicate 5TB of data between systems is going to take a week or more. Is there a faster protocol besides netcat that could speed things up? At this rate I'm better off using...
I would add that if you wish to expand consider that with a 5 disk RAIDZ you can add 5 disks at a time instead of 10 disks at a time with 10xRaidz2. Speed is excellent with 5 disks per vdev and with 2 of them you get stripping across them.
Works fantastic with PH. I use Solaris 11 Express with Napp-it for GUI /Windows 7 complete integration. I manage 8TB of data (10x2TB drives) with expansion 30x2TB drives.
Solaris shares are nfs and can stream 90+ MB/s. I have 2 C200's and 1 A-200.
If I use VirtualBox with Solaris as Host and 2008R2 as guest, is there any way an underlining zfs raidz from solaris can be used by windows as storage. There seems to be a 2TB limit via virtualbox.
Can this be done via iSCSI for example? I have read that "raw disk access" can be configured...
Its a thread to thank ASUS for dealing with INTEL's defective chipset in record speed.
I don't work for ASUS or any other computer company. I've been building and ripping apart systems for about 30 years and can still remember when overclocking an IBM AT consisted of switching out a crystal...
You seem to have problems unrelated to the sandybridge recall. I feel for you but speaking for myself, Asus has done a remarkable job of handling INTEL'S defective chipset. It maybe ASUS has a priority to swap these boards out first because of the sheer magnitude of the problem.
N.B Check...
Just Want to thank ASUS and their employees who post on this system for an amazing job of replacing the P8P67 defective INTEL chipsets.
The process has been largely pain free and beyond my expectations with respect to replacement speed.
I'm sure some will have complaints but in my opinion...
