I've definitely had the experience, 5-6 tabs in Safari, and it often needs to reload. 1GB RAM is just not cutting it on iOS devices.

That's true, I've been considering that too for future proofing, especially as the cheap m-ATX board only has two slots. I guess the other big question is the CPU/Mobo. Is the i3 overkill? Should I downgrade to a GXXXX or a budget AMD?

This is very true, many models of Android for 2-3 iPhone models on the market at any given point. I do think that more pressure on the company is good though, can't let them be complacent on too much brand loyalty.

I've always scanned into JPEG, cleaned up the pages in ScanTailor (http://scantailor.sourceforge.net/?q=en/about), use Adobe to create a PDF, and then OCR with a software of choice. 300dpi is fine for black and white text, some people go lower to 150 even.
