ENERMAX LIQTECH TR4 AIO Liquid CPU Coolers Review

Welp, just got my RMA processed, they're dropping a new one in the mail. I'll take some post-mortem pictures of the inside of mine when I crack it open in a bit. Edit: Looks like massive coolant boil off and some chunky crud that build up in the microchannels. Also the copper is pretty badly...

ENERMAX LIQTECH TR4 AIO Liquid CPU Coolers Review

At some point I'm gonna just do a custom loop for it, possibly when TR 3 hits using the new CCX cores on the 7nm process. In the interim, I'll just put a Noctua on it and dial way back on the OC. Shame such a nice performing part has such a hilariously awful failure mode.

ENERMAX LIQTECH TR4 AIO Liquid CPU Coolers Review

So I'm seeing the same issues. My problem was this was a virtualization box in a rack. So the only thing I noticed was the machine randomly shutting off. After an afternoon of memtest and two more mystery shutoffs, I cracked the thing open and started it up on my test bench, and the FLIR...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

So I learned about an interesting error, if you manually make a COMSTAR LU and set the blocksize to 4096 using a zfs volume block device as the storage target, the backing storage takes about 1.5-2x as much as you'd expect. Which will run the pool to 0 bytes free and break all kinds of fun stuff.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I have an X520 in my OmniOS setup, and it works pretty well. No complaints whatsoever. I did run into a really fun bug setting up my new 8TB HDDs with napp-it. Running parted -lm to list the disks out would hang and never complete. Using the disk initialize step wouldn't work either...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

NFS by default uses sync writes, there should be an option to disable them to test if that's the case. If you still want sync writes, get a flash based disk and use it as the pool's ZIL. But if I destroyed both pools and recreated them as one big pool with 2 vdevs, I would avoid the...

Question time! I have a series of questions regarding my home brew OmniOS Hobo-SAN that I'd like help with. Most helpful set of answers, or really in depth answers get an Amazon gift card. Background Info: My current setup is an OmniOS install on a whitebox supermicro storage chassis, LSI...

Why are external HDDs still cheaper than their internal equivalent?

The fact that you void any warranty you may be able to get from the drive manufacturer? Having drives with a 5 year 'It broke, take it back' warranty makes it really easy to avoid dealing with issues when one of the drives takes a dump in year 3.

Will I notice the difference between SanDisk Ultra II and Samsung 850 Pro

Well yeah, but a drive with SLC flash attached to a shitty ADATA controller from the very first consumer SSDs will probably fail a lot faster than a drive with TLC attached to a top of the line modern controller. There are a lot more moving parts on an SSD than just flash size and flash...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

That would probably be the for the best. ZFS list -p gives raw byte values, so the volume creation stuff, silly regex issue aside, works fine. I think the bug may be someplace in the COMSTAR volume LU detection and size conversion code. It autodetects the volumes just fine, but doesn't...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I paid _Gea for a pro license, because the fancy monitoring applets are way easier on the eyes than iostat -xen 15. He did good work for a long assed time for free, and I figured the ease of use was worth the ~150 euros I paid him for his dev time. The fact that there are odd interactions...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I had those same issues, and it turned out to be a 5 year old flaky WD Green drive that was causing the issues. Moved the data to a new set of drives, removed the old ones and the system was just fine.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

_Gea: I have a pretty obnoxious issue I've discovered in the Disk Volume/COMSTAR volume LU creation systems. When you create a disk volume and specify a size, it ignores "." in the input field. 13.6 TB turns into 136 TB. EDIT: The second issue is that the sizing of the zfs Volume and...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

After looking to exactly how I had the iSCSI LU set up, I finally noticed that the ZFS file system that was housing the thin provisioned file had hit 0 bytes free. So yeah, that was what was causing the entire system to completely lose it's mind. I blew away the entire zpool it was stored on...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

This is the kind of busy that causes the windows VM to disconnect the disk because IOs hung for over 30 seconds. A month ago this didn't happen, which makes me think that it may have been caused by my last update. I'm trying to sync files between the pool and the COMSTAR iscsi volume, and it...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I'm seeing some really REALLY high wait times and 100% wait and busy times in iostat when copying stuff to or from one of my arrays. Wait times of over 33,000 ms, both in iostat, and when looking at the iscsi latency on the VM it's pointing to. Is there a dtrace script, or something I can run...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Looks like I managed to fry my SAS card somehow. I just flashed it to the latest firmware, and in addition to a bunch of NVDATA mismatch errors, using the configuration util via ctrl+c ends up with it hardlocking after a minute or two. Good times.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I had them plugged straight into the card with my old Norco 4224 case, and the system would mysteriously hang then reboot, without even core dumping, so I can assume that either it just deeply doesn't like the flaky disks (during the scrub it repaired ~1 MB on 4k bad sectors, with 30+ HW...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

So I'm running into an issue with my new SAN host setup. I'm running a Supermicro X9SRi motherboard, Xeon E5 proc, and 32 GB of ECC UDIMMs. It's all in a Supermicro 24 bay case with the EC26 SAS expander. I built the server out with OmniOS, the latest stable build, and ran a pkg update on it...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

My tape backup program is more or less windows only, and needs to use VSS to take the backups. They don't have a linux client worth a shit, much less a solaris one. So in order to spin all my stuff to tape, I need to use iSCSI volumes mapped directly to the file server I spin up. Unless you...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I had a question about iSCSI/COMSTAR best practices. Because of limitations in the free backup tool I use to write shit to tape, I need to convert all my CIFS shares into raw iSCSI storage space mapped to a windows file server. What is the best way to convert a raw, empty pool into usable...

    HP Z30i

I am extremely pleased with my purchase. After two weeks of staring at it 10-14 hours a day for work, I have yet to find anything I really dislike about it. I never do color sensitive work, so it's not a big deal that the colors are a bit saturated. I don't have it in sRGB mode, and I don't...

    HP Z30i

Sadly my shitbox color puck isn't supported by pretty much anything but the software it came with. There are a lot of 3rd party programs that could calibrate it down to sRGB by playing with the color sliders and making a fancy 3D LUT for the system to render through, but I can't actually use...

    HP Z30i

Ha, no worries. If I really felt like spending the weekend with my color puck and some other reviews, I could do a pretty detailed look at it, but I'm too busy actually using it. I basically went out on a limb with this one and bought it with no reviews anywhere. And it was worth it...

    HP Z30i

I've been playing Borderlands 2 for the past 2 days on this thing, plus BF3 and TF2, and I don't notice anything different compared to my 24s, even during side by side testing. Both behave about the same, which is on the lower end of average for an IPS panel. about 20ms. Without some very...

A bit of backstory, my normal setup was 2x 24" HP LP2475w monitors. The panels are between 1 and 3 years old. Both panels were calibrated to the 6500K/120 cd/m^2 standard using my old Blue Eye Pro Proof Edition Colorimiter and software package. So first impressions: It's big. I thought...

_Gea: Would it be possible to include a way to recover a thin provisioned iSCSI LUN in the web UI? I had to reformat my system to deal with some errors, and I couldn't reconnect my 250gb iSCSI target through the webUI, I had to use the CLI. Also, can you add a way to attach cache/log disks...

ZFS Pool Demolished, Hard Drives or Controller?

The Norco backplanes with the SAS cables will map them 0/1/2/3 in order on almost every LSI controller. What I do is get those printable labels and just label every row, and use a dd read c1t1d0 dev/null to make the access light stay a solid blue. After you spot check every drive to make sure...

Gea, I love napp-it, thanks a ton for developing it. It makes administering my system a ton easier. I was wondering if you had any plans to include Analytics of some kind? Having simple dropdown menus to select things I'm interested in and getting pretty pictures is a hell of a lot...

OpenSolaris ZFS, FreeNAS, SAS CARD and Expander Questions

Having personally put together a system almost exactly like the one your are proposing, I can offer you a few things I learned from the experience. 1) Stay AWAY FAR FAR AWAY from any 4k drives. They use 512 byte sector emulation and since ZFS is a clever OS, it'll use 512 Byte chunks for...

ZFS Monster - Phase III - 3200MB/s Write

http://www.scsita.org/aboutscsi/sas/tutorials/SAS_Link_layer_2_public.pdf Page 35 shows you how it will 'talk more slowly' over a 6Gb link to talk with a slower SATAII HDD running at 3Gb. Basically it'll fill every other dword with a filler block, so the effective command and data transaction...

ZFS Monster - Phase III - 3200MB/s Write

As far as I can tell, they can't do that, because of the way the protocol works. Throughput per channel is still limited to the average link speed of all accessed devices. If everything is SATAII, then it doesn't matter if you have a 12Gb/sec connection, the HBA will still throttle itself down...

ZFS Monster - Phase III - 3200MB/s Write

It sucks that the expander/lsi doesn't auto negotiate the faster speed, but if the expander doesn't have some way of buffering or otherwise slowing link speeds to the attached devices, I can see how it would default to the slowest speed attached to the network. Edit: Apparently this is a...

    ZFS Performance Numbers

Good to know. I finally got filebench to work, my RAID6 array pushes a fairly nice 440MB/sec on 8 drives using the mediaserver preset. And god damn does it take forever to pre-allocate the files.
