Oh crap. I feel like an idiot. For some reason I thought I had a 1155. Just remembered it was a Core 2 Quad (775). Doh!
Thanks. I guess it's time for me to go HSF shopping.
I think the reason why it's sluggish has more to do with you running a 64bit OS on 2GB of RAM. 64-bit does use more memory - should be about twice. I'd upgrade to at least 4GB of RAM if you want to use Win7 x64. Otherwise, stick with x86 until you upgrade the RAM.
PS: I had Windows 7 x64...
I'm in the same boat. Looking for something stupid simple for mom. However, it'll also need for me to make custom icons, since she likes to watch streaming TV from web sites (some flash based, some are ASX files that's just streaming video).
Yahoo the email account I created for her, but have...
Update: I cleaned up the dust inside of the case and reinstalled Windows 7 since the last time I updated this thread. Nothing changed.
I think the Win7 driver for the 8500GT just switches video resolution when it doesn't detect the HDMI connection (when my reciever is turned off). I noticed...
It did NOT work. :( After the set up was done, it did not want to boot. Just wanted to update followers of this thread.
I have a 4GB microdrive CF that I was able to install XP on, so in theory, it should work. Maybe the cards need to support ATA modes to work. I just can't install...
Not to bump and old thread, but I wanted to thank you for the response. I rarely check the forums, sorry. I did eventually get the 160GB G2 when it was on sale for $470 at Amazon IIRC. Looks like the only worthy SSDs to get are the Intel G2s and the OCZs Vertex and Agility series.
Sure...
With so many SSDs out there now, I'm confused. The only thing I know for certain is that the Intel X25-M G2s have native TRIM support (on Win 7).
Are there any other drives out there that also have the same support? I had my heart set on the G2s when they become more available, but the...
I love the case, but it's getting dirty real quick! It's not in a spot where I can take out and clean every once in a while easily. Maybe I need to relocate my desk...
They are rare since they aren't really being made in abundance, so that's the price you will pay. However, there are people (including myself) that have a bunch of them lying around that just want to get rid of them for much lower. :)
Re: CPU for Hulu, sorry I didn't make myself clearer. I meant for HD content on Hulu, which isn't a lot I guess. Maybe it's just me, but even on standard def stuff, it still seems a bit jerky.
Oh, definitely get Hulu Desktop. :) And all signs point to HDTV or LCD monitor. :D
It works! I am testing it on my test rig of course. Read speeds are decent - 24 MB/sec (both of them RAID0). Individually, they are about 14.5 MB/sec read, so there's a lot of overhead when going to RAID0 it seems.
Write speeds is horrible though. Averages 5MB/sec. Indiviudually, they do...
Thanks for the responses. I'll look into the heat issue.
Also, having it automatically reboot once every day is not a bad idea. How do I go about this? I know in the BIOS, you can set it to wake up, but not shut down. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L.
Is this something you can do in Task...
Does anyone here use Windows 7 as their HTPC and leave Media Center running 24/7?
Mine seems to stop responding after some time passes, and usually random. I would say the frequency is about every week or so. I would turn on my reciever and TV, and it will sho "No Signal". I wouldn't be...
Way ahead of you. :) I have 2 CF to SATA adapters lying around - bought them for $10/ea at ebay a long time ago for this purpose, but found out CF prices were still pretty high.
Today, I saw that Fry's was selling 8GB CFs for under $20. I bought two so I can RAID them for 16GB. While...
That's a question that Microsoft did not officially give an answer to, so everyone is waiting for the Upgrade version of Windows 7 to come out to find out.
It's not for portability. It's just that I don't like the idea of having spinning media on 24/7. Plus they are uneccessary energy hogs if they are just going to idle most of the time.
I just want two low-power consumption PCs for serving needs. I was also hoping to run virtualbox on it...
Is it possible to install Windows 7 and/or Windows Server 2008 on a USB flash drive?
Speed is not an issue. I just don't like the idea of a physical media spinning 24x7, and don't want to spend the money on two SSD drives.
Basically it's for a file/printer server PC (Windows Server 2008...
About a week ago, I found boxes of Windows 7 inside of a glass case at a local Best Buy, already tagged with prices (Windows 7 Pro upgrade tagged at $199.99). I snapped a photo and put it up on my Facebook. :)
Arg, that's bad news.
I finally got back home and did my homework. There's no model stamped on the case, but after googling a few clues, I deduce its a Shuttle XPC ST61G4
I just plan on upgrading the motherboard so I can use a LGA775 CPU I already have (lower power usage) and I can use...
I've got an old Shuttle Mini PC that currently have a P4 3.0GHz. It's an AGP system.
The case and PSU is still good. I was wondering if the motherboard is a standard formfactor (like ITX or micro-ATX) and if not, does Shuttle sell just the motherboards for their mini PC line.
Thanks.
I got a Gigabyte P35-DS3L and was OCing the Q6600 to 3.5GHz - look at the underside of the motherboard when I finally took it apart:

I since replaced the board with a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R because of more power regulators and factory passive...
For the price, I think the Best Buy linked laptop is a good deal. I like the fact that it's a 15.6", not a 17", and the GTX260 (though not like a Desktop version) is near the top performers in the laptop segment.
The screen res is kinda low though, but that just means the GTX260 have more...
I already have the 2250, and I like it. It also has an FM radio tuner. It looks like the 2250 with the Duet as a 2nd tuner card is a deadly combo - 4 tuners (2 different sources), and an FM tuner.
I only do ATSC so this is a good combo for me. Currently, Im using the CAT Eye 150s - old PCI...
If you can afford the 5750, I second this.

You may only be doing 2.0 audio now, but it's nice to have a video card that also have the audio chops to do TrueHD and DTS-MA bitstreaming for when you're ready for a 5.1 or 7.1 setup.
A PC with a Core 2 Duo running at least 2.4GHz is required for full screen HD Hulu streams. Check out Hulu Desktop for an easy way to access Hulu content on an HTPC. It works with a remote, and also someone out there created a Media Center plugin that lets you launch Hulu Desktop from within...
I love Music Control which allows you to background and control Pandora and other streaming radio just like you can with the built-in iPod app.
I also love Backgrounder (before Music Control) to background Pandora. It's also good for IM apps.
I don't do themes, however. I should check...
I dunno if it's in your budget, but if you care about bitstreaming Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA lossless audio from BluRay, wait for the AMD/ATI Radeon 5770. They say they are going to be in the $160 (USD) range.
Personally, I'm waiting for AMD to have the same functionality integrated on the...
Well, let me ask you guys and gals this: Did Windows Vista and 7 improve the reliability and stability of sleep mode? And what is the behavior of sleep mode if I hit the sleep button while it's already recording a TV show? Would it sleep right there, or would it wait until it finished...
My cheap Norcent 37" 720p TV turns off when there is no signal coming in on the VGA or HDMI after a few minutes. However, my Samsung 47" 650 series TV does not. However, the Samsung does support the HDMI-CEC spec, and if I set my Sony receiver to send a shut off signal when I turn it off, it...
Crap, I just noticed. I hope they update it because I really like the fact that you don't have to create an ad hoc for it to work. Just connect to your iPhone as if it was a WiFi hotspot.
