Until yesterday: Switched to Telekom Hybrid (Combination of ADSL2+ & LTE) today: There's more possible - up to 100 down & 40 up, but seems like I need some external antennas.

    Free vmware ESXi questions

You can manage it under Linux, if you've installed VMware Workstation 10 for Linux. This works very well. The other option (cheaper than buying a VMware Workstation License) is to setup a small Windows VM on the ESXi and use RDP to access it. You can then install the vSphere client in that VM...

64TB HomeServer - Windows or Linux Areca 1880 16x4TB Drives

I remember having an Areca 8-Port SAS Controller with 8x WD Green 1TB drives - a very bad combination. It kicked the drives every 2nd day. It was nightmare :) Silhouette is right: Consumer drives and RAID controllers are not a very idea.

64TB HomeServer - Windows or Linux Areca 1880 16x4TB Drives

I wonder why you want to use a hardware RAID controller for this. A simply HBA would've been cheaper and then use mdadm for RAID or even ZFS on Linux, which works very stable and great meanwhile. However: If you run a fileserver, you should *ALWAYS* use ECC memory (on the board, not only on...

    HP p400 + ESXi 5.1 in non-HP server

Hi, I thought I should share a way to use the HP p400 RAID controller on a non-HP server/board with ESXi. As it seems, there's no driver for the p400 on ESXi 5.1, also, there are no drivers to install for 5.1 afterwards. I've seen the storage, but on every try to format it, I received a...

what software do you use to perform backups

For my father in law, I've created a small robocopy script he can just launch by right-clicking and "run as administrator" once he has attached his 2.5" external disk. On my servers, I backup using rsync in a shell script (Linux).

    Simple Virtualization

I don't see a problem in running a regular desktop with Windows, Mac or Linux and put VMware Workstation/Fusion or VirtualBox on top of it? Just be sure you have enough RAM. At least the VMware products are able to run spanning across multiple screens. I think there's also a nice solution by...

1000pt dual port nic hardware question.

There are some mainboards that have "GPU"-only PCIe x16 slots and can't drive any RAID card or even network cards. But I must say that I also think it's DOA as I've never had such on any board from Asus, Gigabyte, Asrock or SuperMicro.

    Intel RAID 1 read performance

RAID1 is ~the speed of a single disk, as ALL the data is written on both HDs at the same time. RAID1 is "mirror". RAID0 is much faster, as the data is striped above the (for example) 2 HDs, means 50% are written to one disk while the other 50% are written to the other one. RAID0 is "striped".

Well, the original fan was damaged and super loud. Even the new fan is ~27dB and not really quiet - but as I will put the switch into the rack which is in the last room in the basement, it's fine ;) As long as it does it's work.

Looking for a new storage solution

I agree that the HP MicroServer N40l is a great box. I run mine for a couple of months now with 8GB ECC RAM, a 2nd NIC (Intel on PCIe x16 slot) + the iLO/IPMI card for remote control. I've put in 6 drives - 4 on the bays + one in a 5.25" to 3.5" frame and on top of that a small 2.5" HD for the...

    Monitor Network

I think it would be the easiest to install an IPCop as ChinaMan has recommended on a separate system and use it for filtering and logging. You can easily access the web interface and you should enable the Proxy transparent, so that all users HAVE TO use it. AddOns like Calamaris will generate a...

    8X RAID in 16X Slot

@sawk: While it sounds like a huge performance drop, the switch from x16 to x8 has nearly no effect to the graphic performance as Linus Sebastian (NCIX Tech Tipps) has shown in one of his YouTube videos. As far as I remember it was this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfXALgE7mVM However...

what should i get for my storage server?

That's a very interesting thread, guys! I've just migrated my stuff from a Debian fileserver to a HP Microserver (N40L w/4GB ECC RAM) that runs a DC (need this for training purpose). However - I'm currently running the onboard RAID10 over 4x 1.5TB HDs + a separate HD for my media - which feels...

It's a cold mounted foil. The back site is gluey and glues easily on flat surfaces like the wooden top plate or the fronts of the 19" cases. Maybe a thermafoil would be better to use, especially for the corners :) By the way: here is a link to the foil...

    Questions to ESXi all-in-one

Hey brutalizer, it's true. The risk is there, that the new system still corrupts my files silently and that is a bad feeling. The reason that I've switched to ZFS initially. I also fully agree with you, that just because I don't see the errors, the may exist (dark matter exist, even if we...

Just my 2 cents... Yes - Linux mdadm works great in an ESXi All-in-one-box. I had that running for nearly a year and it was the so far best experience I had. I just recommend to spend some money on good hardware. I have a SuperMicro X9SCM-F + Xeon 1230 CPU + 16GB ECC RAM + 2x Intel SASUC8i...
