This is targeted at the same demographic that think their iPhone and Macbook are status symbols. Cheap white ear buds and a gold PS4 will not make people think you are affluent.
"Units shipped" is what companies reference to artificially inflate the numbers. How many units have actually been powered on and run Zelda or any game for that matter? This device, like every internet-connected device, obviously phones home tons of telemetry/data.

I'm not sure why you think this is so far fetched, Microsoft loves subscriptions. They are already heavily pushing subscriptions of bundled/add-on crap (Office 365, One Drive, ad-free Solitaire, Groove, Minecraft, Xbox Live, etc).

That is just marketing nonsense...and apparently it worked.
Microsoft will continue to upgrade and release new versions of Windows they just won't change the name/number. This makes it easier to trick people into upgrading or doing it without their consent.
