$340 for a brand new 2408WFP is a great deal, the lowest it's normally been, even with a coupon, has been $395.10 USD + tax (after a 10% off coupon, and free shipping). So $340 is quite optimal. The only thing that would make the deal sour would be if it were an old revision, that is, not the...
I wonder, though, if Dell will stop selling the 2408WFP once the U2410 is available in the US. Seems plausible if they are "selling off their quantities of the 2408's before they start offering the U2410".
Looking for that size, resolution, and response time being a priority, I would recommend any of the tn panels you come across, as they will have the fastest response time and/or input lag. Something along the lines of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824113019 (not saying...
Weird. I just googled 59hz, and it looks like all sorts of people are having trouble on different versions of Windows Vista and 7, with monitors only displaying 59hz, in many cases, causing games to simply not work.
The Dell 2408WFP *is* on sale, right now, for $395.10, free shipping, http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=664883&t=1507493 (as cklin mentioned).
I bought mine for this price, and I'd like to know if anyone out there is willing to submit a better panel for <$400, I don't think...
I think he may have my dad's syndrome: when my father points at things HE TOUCHES THE SCREEN! But to double the bad, if he sees a spec of dust/dirt on the screen, HE LICKS HIS FINGER, AND WIPES IT OFF! Creating huge saliva-smudges.
One of my pet peeves is people touching the screens of...
Yeah, Black Friday definitely tends to be the best price time of the year, however, I've tended to notice that the deals are most often on generic or "cheapest" possible items. Last year it was 22" widescreen LCD screens for between $99 and $149, however, they were all of the lowest quality...
Good luck with your replacement, I got my 2408 and haven't noticed anything like that.
As for the 2410, the price is going to be a LOT higher, and it might not be available right away. I'd at least wait for a couple reputable reviews before getting a monitor that is currently priced at $760+
AFAIK, the only way to tell the revision is the sticker on the original packaging or monitor that says A02. As well, you can tell that it's unrevised if the sharpness is only adjustable in increments of 25 rather than 10, but this won't help you to tell the difference between an A01 and A02. And...
If $760 holds true from the original Japan release of the 2410, then "a bit more coin" is going to mean nearly double, as the 2408 has repeatedly hit sale prices of $412 and lower (mine was $395.10 after coupon + 6% sales tax, shipping was free).
This a very important post to take to heart. The fact is, I was in this exact group: I had a 19" CRT, and went to a 24" LCD. It "feels" different, but of course it does! My DPI changed a ton. That's why I'm reluctant to blame my "different feelings" on input lag, and more inclined to blame them...
I don't think the revision A02 of the 2408wfp is a "bad" monitor for gaming, but as for input lag and response time, there are much better choices if gaming is your biggest priority. I posted in another thread, but basically with the A02, I found the input lag to be ~31ms on average, which...
Interesting, I've got a new 2408WFP A02, I'm using it via a DVI cable, typical XP setup,
I'm using factory defaults for the monitor (50 brightness, 50 contrast), and I think it's fine where it is, day or night, light on or off.
I'd say at worst, that's a "little bright" for most people...
$399 refurb? It was just $412 new a couple days ago, and before that it had a price of $439 plus a 10% off coupon making it cheaper than that refurb price.
Are you outside the U.S. or something? Otherwise, I'd say that refurb price is no good.
Yeah, if you're laying down that kind of cash for a monitor (in this case the 2408WFP), then you shouldn't be using a VGA cable, and shouldn't be putting it into such a basic video card.
Assuming your motherboard supports this interface as an upgrade, a good brand of videocard that's worth...
Yeah, my problem with this one is that there's no penalty for accidentally going early; which caters to results that aren't accurate.
Still, for research purposes: I've got a Logitech MX310, corded, optical, USB mouse, in Windows XP, latest mouse drivers, checked the polling and it's set to...
Interesting. I see, so you're saying that many CRTs (if not all) basically suck at sharpness compared to newer / nicer LCDs?
I'm not familiar with actual sharpness testing just measurements, and it would seem in theory that higher resolution on a smaller scree = sharper, than a lower...
Ah, well that's data I didn't have; people's listings and reviews I had seen showed 20ms avg for the 2209WA not 9ms. If it's 9ms, then there would be a much bigger difference.
Guess it depends if you can detect ~11ms difference in a monitor or 0.66 frames per second worth of difference. Or you could look at it from the state of mind that the input lag in the 2408WFP is ~50% worse. Whatever floats your boat.
Since when do nicer CRTs have worse sharpness than a newer LCD? My old ViewSonic E90f+SB (19" / 18" viewable) Flat CRT has a max resolution of 1792 x 1344, this monitor isn't a top of the line CRT or anything, it's an E series, was about $240 back in 2003.
So 1792 x 1344 over 18" versus a...
Whoa whoa whoa, let's try and keep it positive.
My .02 on the pics:
1) With a camera that you described, it sounds like you just need to change the modes to shoot better shots. It's a Canon camera, a nice one at that, it should have a mode called Tv (which gives shutter speed priority)...
Man, I was conflicted for about a year before I finally chose this monitor. My budget was <$600 (after tax/shipping/etc., and preferably lower).
And likewise, it has EVERYTHING I wanted it except the input lag. The big problem is the bulk of reviews are old, and don't reflect the current...
I understand, well, not only do the brightness and contrast bars go from 0 to 100, but they move in increments of 3's for each #, i.e. 3 clicks on the + sign moves it from 50 to 51.
All right, don't feel bad, there is no A03 revision as of yet. This guy's smokin` some crack. I've Google'd my ass off and have yet to see anything about an A03 except people mis-posting/in error.

NOW LOSTMAN! You are not forgotten, and I feel your pain...
I really don't know what to look for especially, regarding calibration (I assume you mean color). It looks good on factory default settings to me, but I don't have any tools to measure this with, other than to compare it to my CRT. It looks a helluva lot better than my older ViewSonic LCD (VX922b).
After messing around real quick, I don't think I'm going to be able to get you any useful shots, here's why:
1) I can't fully control the lighting in my room (while minor, there is a window in the room w/ the blinds down, but the sun is up). It may not be changing much at all, but who knows...
I *could* do this, but the monitors aren't flat, side-by-side, they're kind of angled like in a corner, so it really wouldn't do it justice to take a shot either aiming directly at one or the other, or even aiming between them, I'd be glad to show them with the same image in separate shots...
When I received mine from Dell, the revision A02 was marked via a sticker on both the package and the monitor.
A way to check if it's unrevised at all, in the controls adjust the sharpness: if you can only move in increments of 25, then your monitor is unrevised.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel the difference in lag in Windows when I move my mouse in my hand, and observe the cursor on the screen (compared to my old CRT). It is quite subtle, but definitely there.
For reference I use a Logitech MX310 USB, corded, optical mouse, with the latest...
I do agree with you there. If I was still in the competitive, online, fast-paced gaming scene I would have to stick with either a CRT or a low input lag LCD panel (such as my ViewSonic VX922b).
However, I would say that the vast majority of gamers (even moderate ones) will not be affected by...
I'm not used to seeing any ads (I use a combination of Mozilla Firefox 3.5 w/ Adblock Plus 1.02, the EasyList filter + pierceive's FilterGset). Then I also use the MVPS hosts file and SpyBot's Immunization.
On top of all that I use FlashBlock and NoScript, and in Firefox I have pop-ups...
I re-read another page on monitor comparisons:
http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=6&ma1=88&mo1=342&p1=3161&ma2=38&mo2=406&p2=3788&ph=12
One that has lots of data for delay against a CRT.
According to them, 16.7ms is 1 frame of delay @ 60FPS, and a CRT has ~0 frames of delay on...
