When will we see new 6 / 8 Core processors from Intel?

Well titan does cost 1000$ per card, so... :) There was a good article at Anandtech's about Rendering & Calculations : http://www.anandtech.com/show/6808/westmereep-to-sandy-bridgeep-the-scientist-potential-upgrade/6 While the numbers don't apply directly to your case, they do provide a...

NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

I think the biggest problem with making a "perfect SG05" would be the motherboard's CPU location. The CPU needs to be "in the middle" and not "in the back side" but... you run into GPU positioning issues... Honestly what i'd like would be : Take a SG05 and move the MB so that the beginning of...

    Wow an H80 LOSES to a NH-D14

Also D14 will not fit in many cases (let's not even talk about mini-itx) while a watercooled SG05 is real.

    Trinity in the Flesh...or Silicon

This test is kindabiased, high for texture/physics/clutter ? Seriously. Still it proves my point a 500$ gaming laptop is viable and Trinity will do it. With 1366x768 you'll probably get 40-50ish FPS with Trinity on D3, instant sale ! Exactly my point 500$ Trinity will probably beat 500$ Ivy...

    Server CPU's for gaming

You have two choices : 4+4 (S1155) or 6+6 (S2011) even 8+8 would be overkill (not to say stupidly expensive) going dual CPU is probably even worse. Since you were talking about Dual Xeon is assume money is not an issue... Before spending : 1° Check the memory usage of Arma2 2° Check the CPU...

    Trinity in the Flesh...or Silicon

Sims, World of Warcraft, BF3, Diablo3, Madden, NBA Live, Left 4 Dead, these are the gamers AMD is aiming at. Games that you can see "on the news" and "advertised in bus/train stops" Get a 500$ laptop from Mom/Grandma for birthday/high-school/college and game on it. There is a reason...

    Trinity in the Flesh...or Silicon

It would be impossible and unreasonable to expect Trinity to beat (or even come close) SB/IB in IPC... Intel is just too far ahead. With Trinity AMD is asking "Do you want a faster PC or better graphics ?" Also they might be cheaper (which is a huge deal) if they charge less for the chipset...

    Extremely Disappointed with Ivy-Bridge

OK i did go a bit overboard :) But the figures aren't that far off : http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2011/jun/06/idc-pc-sales-growth-warns In 2011 200Million Laptops, 150Million Desktops.... assuming 60% of these were Intels. We get 120Million Intel Laptops, 90 Million Intel Desktops...

    Extremely Disappointed with Ivy-Bridge

Trackr wanted +20% increase in IPC (or its not worth releasing) with a -50% Consumption (less would be marginal).... Talk about deluded... We have a faster CPU (+5%) that uses less power (-15%) with a better GPU (+30%) for 10$ less. It does run hotter (from +5 to +8° at Stock) and does OC a lot...

Apple To Pay Dividend And Repurchase Shares

Not really. Reclaiming stock is done purely for "self control" : any BIG decisions made by apple has to be accepted by a minimum of X% of the stockholders. Having 10% (probably even more than that) of your own stock will easily make/break a deal. Yahoo's "NO" to Microsoft was a perfect example...

Anyone hear about NZFS (from flexraid guy[s])

    Flexraid runs "above the OS" you have 2 ways to run it : A) Pure Parity B) RealTimeRaid PureParity is simple, it calculates parity on "another drive" : Drive1 : Files A B C D Drive2 : Files E F G H Drive3 : Files I J K L Drive4 : Files M N O P DriveP : Parity 0101 Basically you MANUALLY...

Windows 8 Preview / I am playing with Storage Spaces

You're probably still better off installing FlexRaid. MS solution would be perfect IF (and its a big IF) they did not strip data. Raid5/6 in for business makes sense (since there will be a 24/7 monitoring, hot spares, etc etc). But for a Home usage ? lose 1 drive, be careless= lose everything.

Windows 8 Preview / I am playing with Storage Spaces

I dream of the day we'll get a FreeNAS that will have a 1 disk Parity function in ZFS (for obvious data integrity). Unraid/Flexraid are by far the best options out there for "Multimedia Data Storage". I understand why MS did this and its awesome.. but... STRIPED DATA ? seriously.... All they...

Windows 8 Preview / I am playing with Storage Spaces

Well it looked amazing until you read this : So basically it's just tweaked Raid3/4 & Raid5/6 nothing more, which does absolutely nothing to protect users against the glaring flaw of "one too many" failures. Sure having "50Virtual TB" and "Add disks as you go" and "One directory to rule them...

Are consumer drives bad for hardware raid?

Head parking is not an issue anyway, all you have to do is flash the drive... (i don't have the link but you can google a post on WD Forums with all the details). Well most of this is due to the extra twists hardware vendors add to their drives or even more cards. (and example would be the...

Are consumer drives bad for hardware raid?

If i remember well google & friends use consumer drives for their storage farms. I think we need to make a distinction between "storage" and "entreprise". Entreprise drives are at least two times more expensive and thats for "basic 3.5 drives". (HITACHI Ultrastar 2TB 500$ vs HITACHI Deskstar...

napol30n,when you see 300W its that the PSU can "produce" 300W to power your PC. with a 100% Efficiency it will use 300W(at the wall) with 50% Efficiency it will use 600W(at the wall). Usually you don't want to run your PSU at more than 80-90% of its load. (Yes i know good PSU can run at 100%...

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

Well... Bulldozer are worth it if you already have a Motherboard, do highly threaded stuff, or need some AMD specific percs (VMs, PCIe, etc)... It's a good (VERY NICHE) product.

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

I'd be curious to the results on something else than FPS (which have very low CPU requirements anyway). Lets say... Starcraft2, Civilisation5, Anno1404... http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-7970-cpu-scaling-performance-review/4 Now... Exactly what many of us have been saying... AMD may be...

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

Which just confirms what we already knew... The difference between x8 and x16 on PCIe 2 is rather small. It takes the best GPU to actually reach the cap and have a noticable penalty on ONE game... Which means that unless you plan to SLI with the BEST Gpu you shouldnt be penalised using two x8...

    Windows 8 Storage Spaces

So they will be doing a RAID5/6 (stripped parity) but not calling it a Raid5/6. Man i was SOOOOOOO hoping see a FlexRaid/Unraid native in windows. X+1 Drives, with the +1 used as parity, and the X "pooled" together. Halas fail :(
  24. D

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

Basically it runs "operating systems" like a game/window (more or less). So 1 PC can have 4-5-6-7-8-9 Pseudo-OS runing "like a game". Your PC runs Seven64... But to play "Magic the Gathering" you need 95.... so you open a VM (like you'd open game) with 95 in it. But your job is making software...

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

Well i stand corrected, that's some DAMN fine GPU scaling : http://www.xbitlabs.com/picture/?src=/images/graphics/evga-geforce-gtx-560-ti-2win/17_e2w-vs-56_big.png
  26. D

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

It's MUCH easier (and cheaper) to upgrade GPU than a CPU. Also CPU tend to have a much longer lifespan than GPU. Secondly SLI/XFire does not scale well, you can get from 20% to 80% (100% is almost never seen). So while a 631 or a i3 "will do the trick most of the time" getting a i5 2500K means...

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

Athlon 631 (65€) Core i5 2500K(160€) Cheap FM1 cost as much as cheap H61... So yes i the i5 is much much more expensive, but its already 25% faster. Also the IPC is probably a bit higher (lets say 10%) and every bit of OC (lets say 15% each) will go in favor of the i5. The...

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

Red Falcon Intel will have zero incentive to make better CPU (they have almost none today). Intel will have zero competition for price/performance (aka raise prices) ARM is still a long long way from taking over Desktops/Workhorses. Tablets/Transformers will on the long run replace Netbooks...

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

AMD Failing will be HORRIBLE for consumers (more than you can ever imagine). A duopole is bad enough, but a monopople ? get ready to get gouged. (Want to talk about Internet Service Providers in the US ?) You should not buy inferior products "for charity" (as someone else put it). However IF...

    Why did you buy Bulldozer?

There are 3 BIG reasons to buy BD and i'm surprised the last one (and most important) was never mentioned : 1 => Having an AM3+ motherboard (cheap & easy upgrade) 2 => Running very parallel workloads 3 => Keeping Intel's competition alive A healthy AMD is good for consumers. Without...

    No i7 3820 talk?

Just like Anandtech said, the 3820 is a good CPU if you want : - Good Enough speeds (no crazy OC) - A LOT OF RAM - Several GPU Thats F@lders, VideoEditors (20GB Ramdrives) etc etc. If you are a gamer, get a 2500K. If you are do a lot of encoding get a 3930K.

    unRAID

N° 3 is false, Unraid needs empty drives (they have to be formated to use reiserFS). BTW here is a small easy list to compare raids & pseudo-raid : http://snapraid.sourceforge.net/compare.html Unraid & ZFS are "real time raid"... SnapRaid/FlexRaid are snapshot/sync based so they are not...
