Same here, I use a external DVD burner when needed. Its better to use the space imho to other things in the case :).

The M1015 cards are flashed to IT mode, so no raid there for the ZFS. Regarding the chassi it's big enough to handle what I am aiming at ;). The Linux and Win7 VM are heavily loaded.

Buy a new Xeon Ivy Bridge, that is what I am doing right now to upgrade my old server. Most bang for the buck now days IMHO.

Thanks for your answer Pirivan, your build made me change my mind about what raid-card to use. So I bought a Areca 1880i-card as well. Bought a BBU to be on the safe side and to increase the performance. If you have any tips on how you set up your Server 2008 R2, please write them ;)...

Hard choices indeed! In my experience its better to buy hardware that you know for a fact that work with each other. Sometimes the mantra "it could work" is good, but in some cases its better to know before you put something together - especially if its a server ;). Its better for your wallet...
