ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Doh, I didn't even consider one was SAS and one was SATA. Guess it's time to find a bigger 1680. I should be able to go from a 1680 to a 1680ix? SAS expander shouldn't cause an issue?

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Does anyone know if you can move an array from an Areca 1680 to a 1261? I tried to swap controllers and the 1261 shows no array and all drives are in the free state. Can you only swap to the same or newer controllers?

    Petabyte Storage

There's a reason Isilon has a really strong position in the Media and Entertainment space. Super easy to use, works well, and scales well as data needs grow. OP: If money is a big factor, maybe consider some of the scale-out storage options. You can alway go with 250TB today and scale to a PB...

Gauging interest for industrial SFF cases.

I use the Supermicro ones. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121405 I also use a 92>120mm fan adapter on the back that adds about an inch, but I could take that off.

Gauging interest for industrial SFF cases.

Could the front also be 6 x 5.25" bays that a radiator could fit in? I'm looking for a small case for a mini NAS, if I could put 2 x 5in3 drive cages in this that'd be pretty awesome. This design could be a fit for both water coolers and storage people.

Ditching the Rack... Building a Tower 16TB Vmware server

how many bays do you really want? if i were to go with 3 x 5in3s again, i'd probably go with the norco 4020. cmstacker was huge, although the casters were nice. and i do like the supermicro racks better than the norco, but it's gonna cost more than the norco and be nearly as big. i ditched...

Ditching the Rack... Building a Tower 16TB Vmware server

i did something similar, retired the norco 4020s and went with a single mini tower with two of the Supermicro 5in3 cages. i highly recommend getting a 92 to 120mm fan adapter and put 120mm fans on the back, it makes the cages so much quieter. coolermaster made the cm stacker, which is what i use...

    lower power storage server?

@pjkenned: At idle. I guess I can try to get under load numbers by getting power numbers for the drives in use without the raid card, and then do a verify with the card to see what the differences are.. I'll see if I can make some time.

    lower power storage server?

One thing I found in building my low power file server is that hardware RAID cards take a good amount of power. Here's some rough numbers off a Kill-A-Watt, based on the delta of with the RAID card and without. Adaptec 31605 ~25w Areca 1680ix-24 ~25w Areca 1260 ~20w

got a power meter? what is your watts/TB?

It's not like this is an ordered list of watts/TB, right? Or ordered by cost, performance, etc. It's just a poll to find out what people have and what kind of power usage they are seeing, with the hardware they posted.

    About Areca ARC-1680ix

i've been running them since CC1H came out, or maybe a couple months? it's my backup array so i don't have heavy usage on it except once or twice a week when i back stuff up. i'll look through the SMART stats and see if anything looks weird.

New Norco cases with minSAS backplanes

many hardware raid controllers have SFF-8087 connector on them, so you'd just go miniSAS to miniSAS. i dont remember how well they work with WHS, but the Supermicro SAS HBA would also be a good option. http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SASLP-MV8.cfm
