Drive Extender Cut from Home Server
http://www.mswhs.com/2010/11/drive-extender-cut-from-home-server/
Haha, as said in my last reply here, Vail = Vista! all over again
I will be happy camper on WHS v1 for some time, and when I upgrade the server hardware I will be probable moving to SBS 2011...
I would really like to build a HTPC with new Fermi gpu (GF104, GF106, GF108) as they finally support HD bitstreaming and Im wondering if Zotac (or any other brand) has any future plans to lunch successor of the great C2D/GF9300 combo in ITX form?
Exactly! Im not touching Vail at all, with its stripping DE and overhead consumptions has totally missed the HOME word in its name.
Im leaning to win7 x64 & flexraid-view (when it will be stable enough), for the time being im staying with whs v1 & flexraid.
Im surprised noone mentioned a remux? I remux all my blu-rays, keeping the intact A/V quality with primary video stream and loosless original language (dtshd-ma, truehd, pcm-->encoded to dtshd-ma) + english pgs subs in TS container.
I for one like to have single files, starting with movie...
Can anyone test if demigrator.exe (drive extender) is still hammering I/O every hour while streaming media, or did they fix the resource priority while drive is being used?
Any other driver for SASLP-MV8 that would enable the smart info? The ones from supermicros ftp dont, but as remebre some tried with different boards (same driver) and on one had work while on other didnt.
With Intel iCore family the ECC is not supported (disabled) on desktop processors (they can do this on the chip itself since the iCore family has bulit in memory controller).
From intel site; http://www.intel.com/support/processors/corei3/sb/CS-031175.htm
What that means is that the...
Ok, Im going with X8SIA-F, ordered today alongside Xeon L3406, 4GB of kingston DDR3 ECC and HP SAS expander card. Should be up and running in a few weeks.
Thanks for the input guys. I know that I cant go wrong with either of the boards mentioned, but was just seeking from which one I will get most for the price (both can get for around 180).
Im more leaned forward to intel one, but is just personal preference. Are there any other mentionable...
Ok, I have narrowed it down to this two;
- Supermicro X8SIA-F
- Intel S3420GPLX
I will be running 4GB of DDR3 ECC ram with Xeon L3406 cpu. I need pcie slots for additional Gbit NIC, saslp card, hp expander, etc..
I can get both boards quite cheap, so I dont know which will be more...
I have questions regarding my setup, so if someone can help me before I take an plunge as Im upgrading mine Core2Duo/775 server;
1. I will be using SASLP-MV card with this expander. If I would theoretically connect all 32 hard drives to the extender, will SASLP be able to handle all data...
still a mystery to me too, have tried number of things but I still dont get smart from sat2-mv8 & saslp-mv8.. have updated mb bios, reinstall whs with ahci, flashed fw of cards, etc... there are only one version of drivers on supermicro ftp site and i really think its more of a luck draw with...
Heh, glade I could help.
Do you need parity backup solution for WHS (in an unRaid way)?
@BigTy
63 bad sectors would worry me a bit. Take a close look for the next couple of days (weeks) and if number will be increasing I would defiantly RAM it. Ihmo, even with current number you could claim...
Sure, just create .bat files with this and scheduled them when you like. This will keep demigrator disabled and not interfering with streaming.
REM Batchfile to stop the WHS Drive Extender Migrator Service and set it to Disabled
net stop DriveExtenderMigrator
sc.exe \\localhost config...
Yes, I have batch files for start/stop of DE. Then I have scheduled them, so demigrator is off every day during watching time.
DE is really heavy on drives and its trashing I/O, thats why high bitrated files like blu-rays are stuttering during streaming.
what is so specific about green drives that is causing troubles for you? I have 1:1 remuxes of blu-rays and streaming works without a hickup for me from wd20eads.. I just cant see anything different from other drives except aggressive 8 sec head parking, but thats why there is wdidle3..
Indeed, thats why I have decided to run wdidle3. But before I do, is there any risk of data loss? I have already populated the drives and would really dont like to loose anything.
Also, anything specific to watch out when patching? Can I have other drives (non WD) connected at the same time?
Hmm, Im not sure either, but would really not want to degrade drives anytime soon. As said, most of the time server is idleing and not doing much, but when I sometimes look over the disk management I see disk activity over all drives in pool (balancing drives?).
My server is idling most of the day, and is being hiberante during night. Since I bought 5 WD20EADS drives last week, I would like to know if I should use wdidle3 on them? Is it worth to decrease load/park cycles over power consumption and safeness in case of power-loss situations?
yea me either, was trying updating bios's, mb chipset driver, etc .. nothing seams to work .. i suspect that it has either to do something with mb brand/model or they have some other drivers for the card
Would also like to know that. If thats the case Im done with any kind of RAID or external backup solutions.
Just imagine, having 2 WHS boxes, set up that one mirrors other automatically every day in other location via VPN - wet dreams :)
Hmm, I still cant figure out why I cant get my 2 MV8 to show temps? It shows disk usage, but no temp read outs. IS there anything I should consider looking? I have temp read outs from MB sata ports tho...
Nah, I have the i7 with ddr3 already, this will be mine 2nd computer for 24/7 running and using it for all stuff that I mentioned + I have been wating from D-E revision till now, cant wait another 2-3 months more for K-E
The newest revision (not out yet) will support DDR3. Im just before buying I-E revision, but seeing the K-E with DDR3 got me thinking. How much of real world difference will I noticed with 4GB of DDR2 vs 4GB of DDR3 with stock e8400 (might OC a bit on stock voltage)..Computer will serve as all a...
Man, they revisioning this board to death. I have waited so long for I-E revision to came in EU, now there is K-E... DDR3 makes it very tempting as prices are even lower and its more energy efficent for 24/7.. grrr it makes mad, as I have everything prepared for my little server except board
