Hey guys - I'm looking to purchase the RAM and SSD, may OS, today and I'm looking around at prices. Newegg has a combo deal with the listed RAM and a Samsung 850 EVO. Any real world differences between the EVO and the PRO lines? So far a quick search has said I won't really see any differences...
Danne - Thanks for the links. The goal of the test / upgrade is to just get something running in the meantime. If the hardware works then I don't need to do an immediate upgrade. If it doesn't, then I'll at least the new pieces I buy will be compatible with the i7 upgrade I'll be doing 'soon'...
Does your particular NUC have the analog 1/8in out? 1/8in out to your mixer. Set the audio in your OS to output via analog rather than the HDMI.
Depending on your mixer inputs you could use the line-in, 1/8in to RCA L/R, or get a 1/8in stereo to 1/4in mono L/R cable and go into the other channels.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming, A/V work (recording music, web cam host), streaming rig, host to a few VMs (nothing serious), usual office work station
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Depends on the parts required. Max...
Aye, thanks for the replies guys.
I didn't mean to post the K version. Good looking. I did some digging and while I think you're correct on the processor, I don't want to meet a bottleneck there. I'm going to pick up the i7-4770 and the extra stick of RAM and call it a day.
Thanks again!
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Strictly a machine to broadcast games from Xbox One
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
A flexible $1000
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible...
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Primarily gaming on MOBA's and MMORPG's, recording of gameplay with FRAPS, NOT streaming / broadcasting, casual web surfing and word processing.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$800 +/-$100

haha - I looked at my history of HTPC build threads and found that I put them in this forum rather than the HTPC forum.
The guy I'm building it for has some era of MS Flight Sim. I think it's 2002... I'm sure he'll upgrade with a better machine though. I don't think it's a major focus of the box.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
HTPC, not a media server. Maybe some light flight sims.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
I imagine I can get this done for less than $500 USD
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please...
Form factor's not terribly important. Something that could match standard stereo components - Antec Fusion series (though I haven't checked prices on that case in years) or a small, out of the way microATX case would be fine.

Thanks for the replies folks. I emailed Technet subscription support receiving this for a reply:

Is getting an MSDN liceses this the best way to go about getting multiple non-production OSs for virtual machines? I'm building a box using ESXi and plan on using it as a development / test bed for our network running a few Win 2008R2 boxes at a time. Thread reference here for an idea of what...
Thanks NetJunkie! What's an alternative to Dell? For a small / medium sized business I thought Dell or HP were the de facto standards? There's also the option of building this box myself... but that would move all the support onto me as well...
Thanks Iopoetve. My Dell rep informed me that memory overcommit is only in the Standard (paid) version and up...? Is she mis-informed?
I don't need super high availability. For the first long while this will be a machine I only have access to and again, just a test bed. Perhaps in the future...
Rez'ing my thread since it's still 'up-to-date'
I've done a lot more reading on virtualization and VMware but still haven't wrapped my head around what exactly I need and it's starting to actually look more expensive than I originally thought.
My biggest question is on memory overcommit on...
I'm looking for a reference on how Windows7 handles applications and sounds. With motherboards with different audio inputs, mixers for individual programs, memory for specific inputs (front / back panel out) I haven't caught on to how it all works.
Basically, a few of the issues I've had are...
Received my video card back from Powercolor today.
What stress tests can I run to test my card out? I'm looking for something more definitive than 'Play SC2 until you see the rain do that thing again' because the issue was hit or miss before.
Edit: Let me add that I've used FurMark to do...
Haha - I didn't mean any disrespect to those guys at all. [H] is the first, second, and third site that immediately come to mind when I'm a'thinking about tech.
Excellent! Thanks kalston. Good info
Didn't find much on [H] for it, and AnandTech is always an afterthought ;) Thanks Old Hippie. Exactly what I was looking for!
*Rig specs in sig*
I'd like to achieve faster boot times and faster game load times by sticking a SSD in my gaming rig. I'm under the impression that there's a few quirks to actually 'using' a solid state drive... Are there? Any Win7 changes that need to be made? Any special maintenance...
Thanks for the comments guys - These are exactly the things I'm unprepared for and would probably be sitting there for days trying to figure out.
I'll definitely be checking out hyper-V. We are 100% MS based and I'm not looking to change that up too much. It's done everything we've needed it to...
That's what I was thinking. Looking for those words of encouragement though. Thanks!
I thought it was a pretty simple setup. When I say mirror exactly what you said - same setup in the lab.
I'm more just wondering what other folks do for a development environment. I think that's actually...
I'm looking to mirror our live environment with a development environment. I figured virtualization would be the best way to go about this and would give me some experience with VMs as well. I've read alot about virtualization but haven't had the opportunity to use it at home.
I'm looking to...
Monday Morning Bump.
General consensus that the card's dying and I should RMA? Since I purchased it in Dec. New Egg says I have to go through the manufacture... Anyone dealt with them before?
I'm not to terribly familiar with troubleshooting video cards since I've never had a problem with one so I'm hoping I'm providing enough information...
