You are fine with non-ECC up to 8GB but you need ECC if you want to run 16GB. Non-EC causes it to be unstable and sees only half the ram half the time.
Funnily I had no issues with the N36L - installed Centos, Windows 2008R2 and then ESXi to test and it never lost the Ram. I just installed the 16GB in one of my N40L and it only saw 16GB once and since reboots with 8GB.
I did however find out (based on multiple reports) that the issue is the...
Found some affordable ram for the Microserver (even works in N36L) which actually works - 16GB / 2x8GB UDIMMS
You can get it in the UK here.

And yes, it does work just fine and is cheap and cheerful
I am using Adaptec cards on all my Microserver - they all come with additional low profile plates ..
Have a look at their product page for external port ones - but downside is - they aren't cheap ..
Would be easier to just get this
http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/mobilerack/CSE-M14.cfm
Which connects straight to a minisas or Sata using the proper cable (when using a raid card) or the equivalent from icydock which has normal Sata connectors...
It does though - as a consumer it does matter.
Whether I pay 250 and get 100 cashback or pay only 150 to begin with ... as a consumer I still pay the same price ...
To be fair - they are so cheap there is just a £25 difference .. so I guess you could see this as a fee for getting your cash back early without paying upfront.
I have noticed another issue with this company though. I'll post / update you guys in time, I just want to give them a chance to...
Some people should something just shut up .. but either way ... if you buy Transparent ones and don't get the cashback - you are down about £25 per device (Transparent and no cashback vs. "licensed supplier" and cashback).
But yea - cheers for pointing Outbound to the site :@
I have been back and forth on that one and tried to find the "catch" - the guy over the phone did mention the cashback and also said he makes sure the invoice is dated prior the 31st and makes sure it is being delivered before.
Now I have been myself through the T&Cs of the cashback...
google HP Microserver and then > shopping > sort by price :D
http://www.transparent-uk.com/hp-n40l-658553-421.html
Doesn't mention cashback - but the SKU matches the one mentioned in the cashback form as requirement.
Bear in mind, you need to order today with next day delivery to...
I wonder if new ones are on their way. You can now get an N40L with 2GB Ram and 250GB HDD for £144 + VAT and £100 cashback - So once you got your cashback, you pay about £72.80 ($115) including tax. You can't even get a phone for that.
http://www.transparent-uk.com/hp-n40l-658553-421.html
£73 including VAT and cashback considered (doesn't mention cashback but has qualifying SKU)
http://www.serversplus.com/servers/tower_servers/hp_tower_servers/658553-421
£94 including VAT and cashback considered (comes with a free...
Fair enough - thanks for the explanation :)
I do something a bit different - mind you, I am working in a big hosting company and overtime is sometimes paid in hardware (on request lol).
Anyway. I run in the optical drive a Supermicro enclosure which allows 4x2.5" dives in that 3.5 'slot'...
I got mine sitting nicely inside as HP MicroServer as router / VPN / NFS and DHCP server using a second USB nic (running Raspbian 14). Love that little beauty (and sits at a load of 0.08 at 800Mhz and 224/32MB memory split)
So why not using Raid0 as a primary to gain the spindle speed and use Raid 5 + Hotspare for the server you are using to store the backups ? There are free imaging softwares out there so you wouldn't lose anything (especially time for reinstall + restore).
Raid 0 and you use it as a backup? Better read up on Raid Level as you leave yourself without any redundancy. You will lose all your data If a single disk fails !
That is the problem with server grade stuff - they are intend to be used in a datacenter where you got hot and cold zones ..
Presume it is one of the EHF / PHF series ? Then you might be out of luck in terms of noise unless you go water cooled ... You could also just take the guts out and...
Got mine and tried the Debian image you can download but it fires up a Kernel Panic straight away but once that is all sorted and working I am sure it will make an awesome little firewall :D
I haven't tested these two specifically but quite a lot of cards (settled with an Adaptec 3805 myself). The result was always the same: The bottle neck was the disk itself as large disks only come in slow speeds. The other difference will be in rebuild speeds upon a drive replacement but you...
Installed one once just as a test (got a delivery for a different server) - don't remember which make it was - all I know is that they cost more than a Microserver :)
Don't think he is either. He said he had them from a different order but didn't say he is using them. Don't think anyone is using them due to the price. You won't get non-ECC sticks with 8Gb so you'd have to buy ECC ram where one stick is almost as much as a Microserver.
Hang on .. has no one ever tried that before ? That is awesome .. having said all that ..... here in the UK the price seems to be approx. £150 for the pair, which is the price of a whole Microserver (considering cashback) :D
But still ... good to know - cheers for that .
Edit: actually...
There will always be new models. If you want to wait then you might end up waiting forever. Also, just because there are newer models it doesn't necessarily mean they are better. When they upgraded the Dell range once, all the new model had was HDMI and Displayport in addition to the DVI but the...
I don't know about games on "Ultra" settings, but we all have the Dell 30" in the office, some dual screen ones too and we all run only a 8600 GT and play games quite a lot.
Granted, not on the highest setting, but some games do run perfectly somI just doubt you need SLI.
Best option is...
Wanted to use mine as vSphere server without all that huhaa of Raid problems.
So put in a 3805 (5805 gets too hot)
then 4x2TB SATA in one channel in Raid 5 but more importantly, 4x2.5" 300 GB SAS (15k) for more disk performance (Raid10) ...
Works like a charm
here the 4x2.5"...
Over two years ago I mounted a fan on an Adaptec 5805 as they are getting quite hot in desktop systems. Trouble is, I forgot what cooler I have used - all I remember is that it took me a long time to find that one so I am hoping someone here has an idea.
There are a few water cooling...
Just thought I update this with the solution .... We finally found out what the problem was. In our environment we allow access to the LUNs via IP. In our case the two vmkernel IPs participating in multipathing.
However, in addition to the LUN connection, the vcenter has to have access as well...
Hiya,
I found it this morning funnily enough and it is working fine. I wonder though, under Storage capabilities, is it supposed to show the underlying Raid level ?
I did make a forum post on the EQL forums and opened an SR as well, to clarify it, but I shall forward you the link, maybe I...
How about the HP Micro Server ? The are normally sold with a nice cash back. Here in the UK for example you get £100 cash back from HP when buying an N36L.. I have upgraded it to 8 GB of Ram (from 1GB standard). It comes with a 250 GB SATA which I removed. I then bought 4x 2TB SATA disks from...
